Anonymous Coward User ID: 700055 Japan 12/27/2012 01:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I spoke to a psychiatrist recently who said that the true instance of Aspberger's/autism in society is only three people in every thousand. But people want to think their nerdy or socially awkward kids are "special" somehow, so there is a push for doctors to give this bullshit diagnosis. That is part of the reason "Aspberger's" will be removed from the upcoming DSM manual and will no longer be considered a true condition. And I am sick of parents saying their kids are "brilliant" or "genius." No, dumbfuck, they are not. Schools are so dumbed down now and TRUE competition is politically incorrect, so everyone gets a gold star on their forehead and everyone is a little genius. You know what "Genius" means literally? "One who generates" or creates something totally new. Like Michaelangelo. Like DaVinci. Not like your dorky son. What has he created? And don't tell me something like a computer program or app that doesn't do anything special. Unless he has created a world-shaking new innovation on the level of a Renaissance master he is not a "Genius." Yeah, its easy to pretend to be a misunderstood genius with a tragically flawed mental condition that absolves him of all responsibility, so he can mope around his room and eat hot pockets that mommy makes. Here's a clue: He's malingering, and you are enabling him. What he really needs is an ass-kicking, to the curb...followed by honest work in the real world shoveling shit or making fries or whatever...just as long as he is producting something of use to society. Take away all the electronic crap, take away the donuts and the free roof over his head, beat the shit out of him, and tell him not to come back until he has accomplished something on his own. End of fucking story. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 536600 United States 12/27/2012 01:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My 21 year old son has Asperger's. He doesn't leave the house. He is brilliant with computers. Does anyone out there know of a company that could use his talent and yet allow him to work from home? Any help or leads would be most appreciated. He's a good person. I'm trying all I can to help him live an independent life...thank you. Quoting: volvo544 Asperger's isn't an official syndrome anymore. (As of two weeks ago) My guess would be that you're supposed to inform him of that and let him know that he has to step up and get out into the world now. It won't be easy, but it's too hard to make a legal living from home these days, especially for the young. I wish you both the best. Remind him to be polite now, since he doesn't have an excuse anymore. *I'm not making the part about it not being a syndrome anymore up. Worth looking into. |

A whole generation of losers who can't even look another person in the eye and are addicted to electronic gadjets, computers, iPhones, and video games. These kids need tough love because its a tough old world out there and their parents aren't doing them any favors by enabling their weakness and patheticness. Perhaps the OP's kid is the one-in-a-million who really is a "brilliant tormented genius" but based on what I have seen chances are he's just another spoiled kid who needs to learn the value of real work. |

What are you talking about? OP didn't say her child is a genius. It appears the child is good with computers. And that is a marketable skill. The rest of your writing doesn't make any sense, the parent is just trying to help out the child, nothing wrong with that. |

They have a great deal to teach if we only watch and listen. Their biggest challenge is society. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 17888588 United States 01/04/2013 07:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My son started showing signs of autism/asperger's when he was around 3/4. I REFUSED to have a child with that disease/ailment. I CONSTANTLY made him engage and then took him for treatment to a children's hospital after the pediatrician kept telling me he was "fine" even though he couldn't eat solid food. We went thru the treatment and he learned how to eat and started showing signs of astounding mathematical talent. Fast-forward, today he has asperger's and he is a straight A honor student with an interest in games and music. I PUSH him constantly and even when he had difficulty making friends, I pushed his boundaries and talked to him constantly about how to deal with people. Today he is polite, friendly and has lots of friends. Loves school, loves LIFE and is a very funny comedian. He is 11 and I am hoping for BIG things for him in the future. If this kid is 21 and the parent is hiding behind this diagnosis, that is a shame. There is something missing that the parent did not do, I am sorry to say. I understand the love part but love means you don't let a kid who has problems just SIT and not engage in life. It is unfortunate that nothing was done when he was younger. |
