Re: Adderall addiction
....sweet Jesus guys, these are drugs we're dealing with, not demons out of hell.

I've been addicted to Adderall before (2 years), shame as it was a proper treatment: Doctors are just as afraid of the stuff as you all are, and I couldn't get the dose level that helped me. So I switched to Ritalin and while it is less effective, Doctors are actually willing to prescribe a proper dose.

Amphetamines are not toxic unless the dose is very high. With racemic amphetamine that level is around 120mg a day. Even at this level, any toxicity is mitigated by antioxidant consumption. Amphetamines have decades of scientific research to support their use and safety.

And by the way, ethyl alcohol and it's metabolites are more toxic than both amphetamine and methamphetamine.

What if, God forbid, the medicine is actually helping, and your friend's suffering comes from elsewhere? A brain disease genotype, for example.

Realistically addiction to stimulants is only psychological. Many people mistake proper use for "addiction".

Re: Adderall addiction
Very interesting thread.

I was put on Adderall about a year ago and keep wanting to get off of it.

My family swears they'll KILL me if I do. They say they can tell when I don't take it.

I'm supposed to take it every morning but yet again I haven't for the past 3 mornings.

I'm certainly not addicted.
 Quoting: Miggy

Yes this is the case for many people.

In university there is a large "black market" for this drug.

Not that I would sell any of mine, but NONE of the young adults that I observed using Adderall illicitly became addicted.

Several of them even disliked the "euphoric" effects of the drug, and used it purely for study/stimulant purposes.

I can understand why people think such things but can I say something here?

Reading these comments I wonder if people understand what it's truly like to be depressed and suicidal.

I don't like taking this medicine but for the first time in years I feel like sticking around, for a change.

And again, I go two or three days without taking it BECAUSE comments like these scare me to death.

I suppose I'm grateful that posters here have "our" best interests at heart but I hope you know many of us would not be easy to live with if it weren't for certain medicines.

There's a video I saw once that describes perfectly how I used to feel before I was on this medication.

I'll see if I can find it.

Perhaps then you'll understand.

I'm not upset at anyone here but I'm just trying to explain that for many of us this drug has brought us and the families who love us a much more loving and peaceful life.

Loading doses or snorting it; you're going to get high and to keep that up you'll need more and more. Then you run out of meds, and you either have to buy more illigetmilty or go through dopamine crash.

Classic Amphetamine Psychosis. It's not permanent and will go away anywhere from 48hrs up to a week or two after she stops using.

It's called "Pyschosis" because it mimics the symptoms of a true, natural pyschosis.

Fair enough, but keep in mind, it is difficult to find a contemporary psychiatrist who doesn't claim the same outcome for cannabis use (progression to psychosis), and we both know THAT isn't true.

Also keep in mind that caffeine psychosis is as common as amphetamine psychosis, and neither of these are considered likely among (ab)users.

Amphetamine "abusers" frequently are on long binges before psychosis creeps in. Even seasoned methamp addicts do not necessarily ever experience amphetamine psychosis. It really is much rarer than most people think.

Adderall is speed. All the issues of meth addiction including psychosis could possibly be present. Speed is the one drug that really will almost certainly make someone nuts.

It would likely not be permanent if they can get clean. But its a rough road to recovery.

When I lived in LA I ended up on snorting meth on and off for 2 years... It eventually gave me paronoid induced phychosis where I also developed symptoms of scitzophrenia (sp?) At the same time I was also drinking every few days and going on major binges while trying to maintain a professional carrer that eventually went down the tubes...

I ended up moving back home to the midwest to get away from the "scene" and people I was around who had the same types of problems. When I went to a doctor back home I lied and said I had been taking adderall for years for my add an that I needed a refill. He didnt do any type of check on my previous medical records so I got him to give me 2 30mgs pills Immediate release 2 x's a day.

Ever since I started taking the adderall and finally had a perscription of it... In my case my life has improved tremendously!!! Somehow it cured my drinking and havent touched any alcohol or had any desire to drink while being on it. It also has kept me from wanting to do any other types of illegal "upper" drugs such as cocaine. We dont get meth out here in the midwest and frankly I wouldnt ever do it again if I even was given the option. I am just fine with my adderall! My parents have also seen a huge improvement in me as I do really have ADD and always have.

There is one problem though... I am addicted to this medicine. I take double my dose a day so I am taking 120 mgs of it instead of 60mgs. I run out 2 weeks early where I end up basically in bed sleeping and miserable untill I can see my doctor for my refill. He will not up my dose because I am already on alot being a girl and 115 lbs.

I seem to sometimes become bi-polar on this medicine as well but for me the benifits have out weighed the risks and from all the trouble and crap I got into when I use to drink... Just from cutting that out of my life my family and friends are tolleratnt of my occasional adderall fits!

Tolerance is always bothersome, and I'm afraid at 120mg/day you will be seeing a lot of that.

If you are interesting in reducing your intake, I would suggest supplementing the amino acids which are converted to dopamine, which are L-Tyrosine and L-Phenylalanine.

For example DL-Phenylalanine (the "D" is an important addition here) can seem to double the potency of amphetamines. Supplementing magnesium reduces stress/hyperactivation in the brain, and enhances amphetamine uptake by the body.

There are also herbs that will help you, Rhodiola rosea for example is used to treat addiction to opiates and to stimulants. It also greatly augments stimulant effects; too much for some people, but doubtfully so for a tolerant amphetamine user.

Keep in mind that Dexedrine is more potent than Adderall, and additionally, one can actually be prescribed pharmaceutical methamphetamine; it is called Desoxyn.

 Quoting: Miggy

Hmm, I'm not sure as to which classification system you are referring, however I do know that amphetamine comes in two "forms" (isomers); dextro-rotary (right-handed) and levo-rotary (left-handed).

In the case of amphetamine, the two isomers have significantly different effects if consumed alone; dextro-amphetamine is considered the "effective" isomer, while levo-amphetamine is more peripherally active, similar to ephedrine (a chemical precursor of amphetamines).

Dexedrine is made of pure dextro-amphetamine. Adderall happens to be 75% dextro-amphetamine, with the rest composed of the less CNS-active levo-amphetamine.

So, as a rough guess, Adderall should be 75-90% as potent as Dexedrine, but as you have seen, the pure D-isomer forms do effect some people much more strongly.
