Category 4 cyclone Evan's hit Fiji, live updates !
After leaving a destructive path in Samoa last week, the category four system is bearing down on Fiji.

Evan is 480 kilometres wide and packing winds of 230 kilometres per hour, making it the strongest cyclone to threaten the country in 20 years.

"The north-eastern part is already experiencing the effect of the cyclone," he said.

Schools are being converted into evacuation centres and the police and military are on standby.

Samoa cyclone damage worse than 2009 tsunami

Disaster officials in Samoa say the damage from Cyclone Evan is worse than that caused by the tsunami in 2009.

Most of the country is without power and more than 4500 people are homeless.

Flood waters still surround villages and homes along the southern coast. The situation there is desperate, the damage extensive.

Matautu Tai Lefuga resident Shirley Sera spent the day sifting through what remained of her home.

“This is where I live and thank God I was able to stay alive with my daughter and my family,” says Ms Sera.

Disaster officials say on the south coast alone more than 1000 homes have been destroyed.

“It [the 2009 tsunami] was focussed on the southern coast of Upolu, but for this one the whole country is affected,” says Filomena Nelson, response coordinator for the tsunami.

Cyclone Evan hits Fiji

Evacuation centres have been activated in Fiji, where flash flooding caused by Cyclone Evan has threatened a number of homes.

The Fiji Times reports the province of Bua has opened its evacuation points as the category 4 cyclone sweeps into the country.

Weather forecasters are now predicting that a reduced Evan may hit New Zealand's Northland and Auckland area towards the end of the week.

Cyclone Evan knocks out power and bridges in Fiji

SUVA, Fiji (AP) — A powerful cyclone ripping through Fiji has caused flooding and structural damage but so far there have been no reports of deaths or serious injuries.

Cyclone Evan earlier killed at least four people in Samoa while 12 more people remain missing there.

Fiji's Permanent Secretary of Information Sharon Smith-Johns said on Monday that the northern parts of Fiji had lost power and that some bridges and roads had been washed out after the cyclone first hit late Sunday. She said about 3,500 people had evacuated to emergency shelters, and that the nation's advance preparation had helped prevent deaths.

The cyclone is expected to make its way south over the next day. It is expected to affect tourist areas around the town of Nadi but miss the capital Suva of the Pacific island nation.

Tropical Cyclone Evan - live updates

Tropical Cyclone Evan is making its way past Fiji today, with average winds in the centre of the storm expected to reach 185kmh, with momentary gusts of 270kmh. Four people have been confirmed dead and up to eight are missing after the cyclone struck Samoa on Thursday.

2.13pm: Scott Walton, general manager of Treasure Island in the Mamauca Islands, said gusts had started to pick up at the resort.
The last of the guests were airlifted from the island this morning, leaving staff hunkered down in the main restaurant.
Storm surges on the island were expected to be no higher than four metres so the restaurant, 10 metres above sea level, was expected to be safe.
"We're pretty confident it is now just a matter of playing scrabble and watching DVDs till it is all done," he said.

I don't think people realize what is happening, Rain-Man. The storm which devastated Soma and is now over Fiji, is next heading for New Zealand, to arrive there, potentially, next Friday.

We all know what day next Friday is.

Re: Category 4 cyclone Evan's hit Fiji, live updates !
2.31pm: Pacific Harbour resident Michael Thoms, who lives 40 minutes from Suva on the edge of where Evan is set to hit hardest, said today he'd just watched a tree in his backyard "take off".
Mr Thoms said Cyclone Evan was set to be more severe than Cyclone Bebe, which hit the region in 1972 and killed 18 people.
"Quite definitely this will be much worse than that one, I feel very sorry for the people up North on the Vanua Levu side."
Cyclone Kina in 1993 killed 23 people in the region and left thousands homeless.
Mr Thoms said the wind was lashing the side of his house and he was staying indoors.
He said he was concerned about the islands of Wallis and Futuna, between Fiji and Samoa.
"The storm has passed right over the top of them, 1500 people live on those two islands -I believe they have lost contact, no doubt they are trying to establish contact again," said Mr Thoms.
"The outcome there may be a very sad affair".
Joanna Underwood of Nadi said they still had power but were forced to stay indoors. She had eight family members at her home and friends who who had flood-prone homes were arriving.
"We have nothing else to do here at the moment except stay inside and watch the wind blow everything outside."
She said the wind was really starting to blow hard and trees outside were bent over.
"It's really gusting, but this is only the beginning of it - the rain has not really started here in Nadi, but once it comes we will then have lots of it."
Mrs Underwood said she expected some homes in Nadi would be destroyed as the wind picked up and flooding began.

2.28pm: Gale force winds are causing power cuts across Fiji.

CycloneEvan centre should hit Nadi in the next hour or so. I cannot stress enough how bad a Category 4 storm is for a populated centre.

3.02pm: Ron Sneddon of Mt Eden is staying at the Fiji Intercontinental Hotel, north of Singatoka.
He writes to nzherald.co.nz

"The hotel is locked down and guests not allowed to leave their rooms. People in beachfront rooms have been evacuated to safer rooms within the resort.
"Fierce winds and driving rain has been going on since breakfast time. Currently we have no food, other than potato chips, peanuts and alcohol - should be right for days with that lot.
"Hotel management are extremely well prepared and communicating updates to us via the public address system. We are expecting food parcels to be delivered later this afternoon.
"We have been told to expect the worst of it from 6pm. Its my birthday tomorrow and I reckon the mini bar will be cleared out by then - donations gratefully accepted."
2.49pm: A bulk carrier ship has been run aground on the edge of a reef in the Suva Harbour. The Fiji Times reported that the carrier, the Starford, started dragging its anchor at about 11.30am, losing its battle to stay afloat just recently.

Re: Category 4 cyclone Evan's hit Fiji, live updates !
It's nice to read this-kind info, fortunately ..

SUVA, Fiji (AP) — Fiji residents are beginning to clean up after a powerful cyclone blew through the Pacific island nation.

Cyclone Evan on Monday ripped roofs from homes and churches, flooded roads and forced thousands to evacuate their homes. Strong seas near the capital, Suva, pulled two container ships onto a reef. Authorities say they hope to refloat them.

Overall, Fiji appears to have come through the storm relatively intact, with some places yet to be assessed. There are no reports of deaths, the international airport at Nadi reopened Tuesday and most tourist resorts sustained only minor damage. Power and communications remain down in parts of the country.

The storm earlier wreaked greater havoc on Samoa. Authorities on Tuesday abandoned a search for 10 missing fishermen, bringing the death toll there to 14.
