C: xp sp3. (25 gig) D: win7. (30 gig) E: win 8 (30 gig) F: your docs & files, etc... No need to "install" Linux when u can boot it from USB. Once setup thusly, You can swap os's on the fly with a reboot ;) |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 7759106 United States 12/14/2012 08:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Windows - Quoting: Melek76 Pros Most commercial applications Gaming Ease of use Cons Huge Customer Base / Huge amount of malware Cache/Temp/Registry Corruption upon long term use Linux - Pros Huge base of open source software Less virus activity Smaller footprint (size/memory/etc...) Cons Higher learning curve Limited Windows application support If you run linux, most of the windows applications will not run. You can run a program call WINE, that will emulate windows; but it has limited support for newer windows apps. There are also several gaming specific programs built on the WINE engine. Otherwise, I would copy your music, movies, pictures, documents, etc. to a flash drive or external drive; so that you can replace them on the new OS. The best way to accomplish this, is to install another hard drive and install the new OS on the new drive. That way you do not lose your data. Good advice.. Hard drives are cheap. Get a new one and install your new OS on it and then transfer your data from the old one. |

Download Vmware Player and you can even download already configured Linux VMs. Also try Linux on a stick. Just install it on a thumb drive and boot into it. Ohh nice, good call. Thanks guys! By the way, I have that same mask from your avatar. "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." John F. Kennedy |

(OP) User ID: 29867967 United States 12/15/2012 12:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Another ? while I am at it. I have this Google rootkit from a tool bar and it is not your average rootkit. I have had this computer almost 4 years ane not once have I not been able to find and take care of the few malicious items I have acquired, including a googlerootkit a couple of months ago. I have been extremely busy the last few weeks wit finals but so I have not had too mcuh time to mess around wit it, but I have always been able to use google and figure out how to find and delete the problem with an hour tops. This one is different thought. It wont let me delete it, I keep finding it, but ut d=says admin setting wont let me delete it when I try, and I am th admin, it then hides in another program and each time I find it it's the same thing. I hate Avaste and similar scans, but have actually tried using them to no avail, even in safe mode (I got rid of the other rootkit this way several weeks ago) Anyways it's annoying as shit and I can't get rid of it. I am known as tgwigwc to all of my friends, not because I am good with computer, but c=because I can use google and have found and destroyed every virus I have tried to over the lest 5 years within an hour tops. Even for fiends who own multimillion dollar businesses an messed up their comps with their books and shit, but for some reson and having a problme with this. None of the specific solutions on google have worked, and I am tired as fuck from not sleeping the last few days, and just want to get this fixed before I pass out. Any ideas will be appreciated. I am going to do battle for a bit starting now, hopefully one of ya'll can help me. Thanks. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 16563157 Israel 12/15/2012 12:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ok, here is the deal. Quoting: Patrick Bateman I am pretty good at maintaining my computer and unlike most, I really do like windows. I am very good with it and actually can successfully maintain it and keep it squeaky clean for years). That being said, however, I am thinking of reformatting my comp and running linux, or at least partitioning the hd and running linux on one of them. Yes I know how to Google search etc, but I want tto here from some of the first hand users on here the pros and cons and what they would do. Why do you like one over the other, or what can you do in one that you like more than the other. Also, If I do this I am going to need to delete everything off my computer, and I have not done this in over 4 years. What are the best programs out there now so I can keep all of my programs, music, movies, apps, settings, etc? Or if you have an idea you think would better suit me, I am open to all ideas ideas!! Thanks in advance!! A lot of mess here so i will try to clear some things out for you. First of all, dont do dual-boots, install linux and windows on separate drives (not partitions!). Most of the linux distribution out there will try to change your bootloader or mess with your other hds or do many sort of strange things that might cause a big headacke if you are not familier with linux bootloaders such as grub or lilo. Linux in a word isnt something specific, its like saying a car, there are many types of linux distro and versions and even when you chose a specific linux distro, you can change its interface to various common desktop managers such as gnome, kde, xfce and others and each desktop manager will be a completly different thing. Your level of computer knowledge is not fully understood from your words so its difficult for me to consult you on a good linux distro for you, but on the other hand since you are not already familiar with linux then you should start with a STABLE and FULL linux distro, not a mod or a distro that has bugs (like MANY linux distros). I would recommend OpenSuse as your 1st linux attempt using the KDE desktop, even though other version of linux might give you better performance (like ubuntu), you dont want to need to be able to get into scrips in the first months or so, there will be plenty to learn without this, believe me. Linux work on mostly on ext3/4 filesystems, these are UNSUPPORTED in windows, i highly recommend ext4 because it is very stable and will keep your data safe but keep in mind that you wont be able to see the data in this drive from windows, this is why i recommend you to use a small hd for the linux (20gb will be tons), while your actual data will be safe on the 2nd drive that will contain windows on ms native fileformat - ntfs. So, to sum: 1 small hd 20-30 gb with opensuse or redhat (opensuse is better in my opinion). Disconnect the windows drive while installing the linux so you wont wipe it by accident or let linux install bootloaders and shit on its master boot record. Choose your os using F8 while your computer boots (well its f8 in most boards... not in all..). .... Regarding your use of your computer - the appstore of apple and ms windows 8 and google android all comes from linux, you will find an easy way to install many many software products very easy, you have great programs that work great on linux (and a few choices for most categories) - aka vlc player, xbmc, word/powerpoint/office package, image editors/viewing, dvd burning whatever, firefox/opera/google chrome, google earth, skype, amule/torrent/downloading software. Regarding performance a 3.5ghz quad core processor with an build-in video adapter will work as fast as an super charged new overclocked to 5ghz with a new video card. So.. here is all the basic data that you need. GOOD LUCK! Hope this helps. |
