Holy CRAP people are already panicking. WTF

Y2K was related to one specific problem-- that many computer programs from years before did not allow for a progression into the 2000's; they might reset at an earlier date and cause all sorts of things to happen with possibly dire consequences.

Exactly. Y2K had a single, reasonably understood, man-made/man-fixable issue.

December 21, 2012, by comparison, is completely amorphous. People who believe in December 21, 2012 as a DOOM date are not aligned on what will happen; giant invisible planet collision, solar flares, earth quakes, aliens, spiritual phenomena, pole reversal, financial doom, etc. And, most of the Dec 21, 2012 communication to the public has been through action movies and conspiracy blogs with a few novelty news stories.

As a result, people who have been taken in by the 2012 Fear Machine don't know what to expect and are looking for signs everywhere ... "I heard there was a solar flare this week, and now I have the sniffles! DOOOOM!!!"

Nasa has been aggressively seeking to dispel doomsday fears. It says there is no evidence Nibiru exists, and rumours it could be hiding behind the sun are unfounded.

"It can't hide behind the sun forever, and we would've seen it years ago," a Nasa scientist said.

The space agency also rejected apocalyptic theories about unusual alignments of the planets, or that the Earth's magnetic poles could suddenly "flip."

Conspiracy theorists contend that the space agency is involved in an elaborate cover up to prevent panic.

But David Morrison, an astronomer at Nasa, said: "At least once a week I get a message from a young person, as young as 11, who says they are ill and/or contemplating suicide because of the coming doomsday. I think it's evil for people to propagate rumours on the internet to frighten children."
