South Plains/Rolling Plains, TX - Is winter finally here? Update - It's here! New Mexico added -12-09-2012
I was just checking the weather report for this weekend to see if we were still going to get the cold front and it looks like we might get some strange, white stuff here! Weather forecasting out here is a crap-shot on a good day, so we'll have to see. We do get snow, but it's been a few years.

[link to forecast.weather.gov]

It's not a large chance, but out here, we take what we get!

edit to add:

All the links have the updated forecasts for New Mexico, South Plains, Rolling Plains, and DFW. The mountains of New Mexico and the eastern half of the state are going to get quite a bit of snow, so if you're traveling today, stay updated.

Remember the 3 P's...plants, pets, and pipes. The windchill factors for tonight could be in the single digits.

Here's Lubbock's local forecast for the next few days. It's been so dry here, for so long, those snowflakes look really good. I hope they aren't messing with us!

It's only a 20% chance, but we really need all the moisture we can get. Take a look at the drought forecast until February 28, 2013. Not good, folks.

The DFW area has a chance of t-storms on Sunday, with a 20% chance of snow between 7 am and 1 pm on Monday.

[link to forecast.weather.gov]

I know it's not much, but people down here don't drive well in snow, even if it's just a little. The cities are set up better than the rural counties. We only have a couple of snow plows and Txdot doesn't store alot of salt to melt snow.

If it does snow here, there will be alot of accidents, just because people are not used to driving in it.

Thanks for the link, AC. That's kind of what we think out here, too. If it happens, wake up the kids and let them go out and play in whatever falls. It won't last long, but that's how it snows in West Texas!

We try to, too. At least until the sun is up for awhile. Usually, our snow turns to glaze ice on the roads and too many don't know how to drive in that kind of weather.

Walkin' on the beach on Lake Erie...love it!

We were supposed to have an El Nino winter, but it shut off and they don't know why. That would have given us alot of moisture. The snow will most likely not happen, that's the way it goes out here. We'll just have to wait and see. I HOPE it stays in the forecast and actually happens. We're shaping up for a bad fire season anytime now. All it needs is a good wind storm/redflag warning.

Wow. I can see why you'd want snow. Any moisture would be good if things are that dry. Uncontrolled fires are horrible and the farmers must be really worried about crops for next year. Was hoping you'd get some rains after the summer passed.

We were too. I think it rained once this fall and we didn't get much. It's not looking good out here. It looks like the cotton crop was good and it's all stripped. It's just waiting to get picked up by the gins for ginning. I read somewhere, that local farmers are looking at alternative crops for next year.

Interesting. Thought they needed more rain too. Might be worth looking in to, to see what crops can grow without much moisture. Just in case of another dust bowl, ya know?

If you're traveling North or West today or tomorrow, here is the TXDot site for road conditions. It's the home page, just type in the area you're looking for. So far, no snow on the South Plains, but Amarillo should be seeing it later this afternoon.
