I had the displeasure of living in a tutti-frutti planned community in Heath, Texas -- what a group of whining, clueless wannabees. I hope they step on their golf balls & crash hard.

Some of these idiots built their houses in a flood plain & then demanded that all the beavers in the creek be killed.

Hundreds of thousands of mutated mosquitoes could soon be unleashed in Florida, but don’t worry: scientists say they have a plan.

It might sound like something out of a low-budget horror film, but the US Food and Drug Administration really is considering whether or not they should allow scientists to send thousands upon thousands of genetically altered insects into the wild.

If all goes as planned, mosquitos modified by some serious Frankenstein treatment will be introduced into the Florida Keys and ideally mate with skeeters that carry the deadly dengue fever, passing along in the process a fatal birth defect that will hopefully eradicate the offspring before birth. From there, scientists say they expect the population of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with the dangerous disease will be decimated in only a few generations without causing any major implications for the native ecosystem.

"The science of it, I think, looks fine. It's straight from setting up experiments and collecting data," Michael Doyle of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District tells the Associated Press.

No vaccination against dengue fever is currently available in any part of the world, and although the mortality rate associated with it is low, it’s still a serious concern. In the Florida Keys where the economy relies on tourism, an epidemic of any sort could be catastrophic. Some fear that sending mutated mosquitos into the environment could have grave implications as well, though, and are asking for more thorough testing before the FDA makes a decision. Of course, it doesn’t help the scientists’ case that it will take several rounds of releasing genetically modified mosquitos in order for their plan to work. [link to rt.com]

"Oxitec has engineered these mosquitoes with a gene activator that responds to the antibiotic tetracycline. The activator remains silent when the mosquitoes are regularly feed the antibiotic. However, once tetracycline levels fall in the mosquito, the activator gene turns on and "floods the system" by activating lots of unnecessary genes. These additional active genes overload the biological processes in the mosquito and they die as a result. The activator gene is not a toxic molecule. It is just its presence at high concentrations in the mosquito that is disruptive, like "throwing a wrench in the machine."

Brilliant idea...just like planting the Brazilian pepper plants to drain the swamps...now they are freakin everywhere choking native plants to death and are known as "Florida holly"...

Welp...the good thing is that when the mosquitos mutate into the flying monkeys from the Wizard of OZ they will probably eat the frikkin Burmese Pythons that are now taking over the everglades.

Really I'm surprised that we don't have Pirranah fish in every canal and armies of fucking Chimps carrying 6 foot tall venus fly trap weapons reaking havoc and attacking us every single day or some other crazy crap down here.

I agree with your opinion of the movie! I was convinced into going to see it with a friend of mine who loves the books.

This is Arizona. The most BORING planned community on the planet. They shoot Democrats here on sight. There's endless miles of strip malls, chain stores, cookie cutter fake adobe houses that are all the same color and design. Everyone drives the same cars, wears the same clothes, has the same haircuts... It's sad, like an old Twilight Zone episode.

I'm only here until Mom recovers and I'm gone like I never even saw the place.

I had a "golfer" total my car. Other's witnessed it and rode away on their cute little carts with American flags and support our troop stickers saying "we didn't see anything, we're not involved". Now I play "Golfhonking". Whenever I pass a course, which I'm surrounded by, and I see a golfer in mid swing I give 'em a blast of my car horn. I've gotten tons of one finger salutes and then seen them smash and throw their clubs on the ground. Great fun. It's a damn desert, and so the golf courses can have their nice green lawns, you're only allowed to wash clothes and run dishwashers before 8am and after 9pm to "conserve" water.

Golf courses in the US waste on average TWO BILLION gallons of fresh, potable water a day to keep their courses green. You can't drink a golf ball.

Leave nature alone as much as you can. Start screwing with the natural balance and pay the consequences.
