How will the bird population be effected?

Four things necessary for our survival!!!
Biodiversity
Interdependence between species
The Law of FINITE Resources
Don't crap where you eat...

They're poisoning all the rats where I live, on the edge of the desert and killing the peccaries (wild pigs that are actually members of the rodent family) because they're a nuisance (by drama and tall tale only) to the people in the "planned" community here..

The prey birds, mainly owls and hawks, are eating the poisoned rats and dying! The same with the coyotes, which did a great job of keeping the rodent population under control.

Those birds or prey also eat scorpions. I spent the day in the hospital from being stung by a Bark Scorpion last week. The only potentially deadly scorpion in the US. I've been stung before by other scorpions, no problem. This was on the back of my neck (Barks are the only ones to climb, hence the name). I blacked out about 15 minutes later.

Now the small dogs that were being left unattended in backyards and attacked by the coyotes and peccaries are being stung by the scorpions and dying. People are finding the Bark scorpions in their bathtubs and kitchens. AND AZ discontinued the use of the anti-venom in 2004.

Nature always seeks a balance. Leave it alone. It always wins in the end.

Yes, what could possibly go wrong!
One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one.

Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway.

Re: BREAKING!! What could possibly go wrong? Genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida
Hundreds of thousands of mutated mosquitoes could soon be unleashed in Florida, but don’t worry: scientists say they have a plan.

It might sound like something out of a low-budget horror film, but the US Food and Drug Administration really is considering whether or not they should allow scientists to send thousands upon thousands of genetically altered insects into the wild.

If all goes as planned, mosquitos modified by some serious Frankenstein treatment will be introduced into the Florida Keys and ideally mate with skeeters that carry the deadly dengue fever, passing along in the process a fatal birth defect that will hopefully eradicate the offspring before birth. From there, scientists say they expect the population of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with the dangerous disease will be decimated in only a few generations without causing any major implications for the native ecosystem.

"The science of it, I think, looks fine. It's straight from setting up experiments and collecting data," Michael Doyle of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District tells the Associated Press.

No vaccination against dengue fever is currently available in any part of the world, and although the mortality rate associated with it is low, it’s still a serious concern. In the Florida Keys where the economy relies on tourism, an epidemic of any sort could be catastrophic. Some fear that sending mutated mosquitos into the environment could have grave implications as well, though, and are asking for more thorough testing before the FDA makes a decision. Of course, it doesn’t help the scientists’ case that it will take several rounds of releasing genetically modified mosquitos in order for their plan to work.

Wrong.
There is not enough food to feed all of us if the government has anything to do with food production or distribution.

If only private enterprise was unleashed, we could easily feed 20 billion people and export the surplus to Mars.

Hundreds of thousands of genetically modified mosquitoes set to be released into the Florida Keys in experiment to fight dengue fever

-The non-biting male mosquitoes genetically modified would pass along a birth defect killing their progeny before reaching maturity

-After a few generations officials say Key West's Aedes aegypti population would die off reducing risk of dengue fever

-FL Keys Mosquito Control District: Modified genes will disappear after mosquitoes carrying it die making no permanent change to wild population

Now they are fucking with insects and viruses. Things at the bottom of the chain.

Can anyone say "domino effect?"

Nature is a fine balance.

This pisses me off enough as it is. I can not live anywhere that is not touched by this taint.

Also, on one hand the same people will praise this Idea, and on the other hand tell us we're making to much CO2 and Methane and destroying the balance of nature.

Oxitec Mosquitoes Have Been Released Before

"The Florida release of the mosquitoes would not be the first for Oxitec. The company has released the mosquitoes previously. In the fall of 2009 they did the open air release of the engineered mosquitoes in the Cayman Islands, and followed up with a larger study the next summer. The company was criticized for pursuing the studies under somewhat of a "hushed" process but Oxitec emphasized that the releases were done in conjunction with Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) of the Cayman Islands and claim that the lack of newsworthiness is the only reason few outside the Cayman Islands knew of it. The company reported an 80% reduction in the Aedes aegypti mosquito population in the 16-hectare test site where the mosquitoes were released.

The same mosquitoes were also released in Brazil in Feb 2011 and Malaysia in Jan 2011.

In contrast to the relatively little notoriety of the Cayman release, the proposed release in Florida Keys is generating quite a commotion. An online petition started in March has gathered over 100,000 signatures, and the growing concern of the residents was covered in the latest issue of Nature. For a more background on the Florida situation, take a look at the detailed article in the Miami New Times News."

"Oxitec has engineered these mosquitoes with a gene activator that responds to the antibiotic tetracycline. The activator remains silent when the mosquitoes are regularly feed the antibiotic. However, once tetracycline levels fall in the mosquito, the activator gene turns on and "floods the system" by activating lots of unnecessary genes. These additional active genes overload the biological processes in the mosquito and they die as a result. The activator gene is not a toxic molecule. It is just its presence at high concentrations in the mosquito that is disruptive, like "throwing a wrench in the machine."

so what will stop them from creating other self terminating life forms?
i'm sure they have already tried this with humans. it would be a great way to control someone. keep taking the antibiotics we give you or you die.

Brilliant idea...just like planting the Brazilian pepper plants to drain the swamps...now they are freakin everywhere choking native plants to death and are known as "Florida holly"...

Welp...the good thing is that when the mosquitos mutate into the flying monkeys from the Wizard of OZ they will probably eat the frikkin Burmese Pythons that are now taking over the everglades.

Really I'm surprised that we don't have Pirranah fish in every canal and armies of fucking Chimps carrying 6 foot tall venus fly trap weapons reaking havoc and attacking us every single day or some other crazy crap down here.

Welcome to Dec.7, 2012, Day T-14 on your Timewave Zero journey to infinite novelty.

The path may include man-made genetically-modified life forms which may alter or in fact completely eliminate the biosphere of Earth.

Please keep your hands and wits inside this reality until you are prepared to exit.

Thank you, and have a pleasant journey.

This is Arizona. The most BORING planned community on the planet. They shoot Democrats here on sight. There's endless miles of strip malls, chain stores, cookie cutter fake adobe houses that are all the same color and design. Everyone drives the same cars, wears the same clothes, has the same haircuts... It's sad, like an old Twilight Zone episode.

I'm only here until Mom recovers and I'm gone like I never even saw the place.

I had a "golfer" total my car. Other's witnessed it and rode away on their cute little carts with American flags and support our troop stickers saying "we didn't see anything, we're not involved". Now I play "Golfhonking". Whenever I pass a course, which I'm surrounded by, and I see a golfer in mid swing I give 'em a blast of my car horn. I've gotten tons of one finger salutes and then seen them smash and throw their clubs on the ground. Great fun. It's a damn desert, and so the golf courses can have their nice green lawns, you're only allowed to wash clothes and run dishwashers before 8am and after 9pm to "conserve" water.

Golf courses in the US waste on average TWO BILLION gallons of fresh, potable water a day to keep their courses green. You can't drink a golf ball.

Leave nature alone as much as you can. Start screwing with the natural balance and pay the consequences.
