Squirrel DOOM
I found a squirrel in my yard just a few minutes ago. He kept running in tight circles to the right. When I walked in his path he just ran right over my boots in the same circle.

I picked him up to see if he had bath salts residue on his whiskers and noticed he had blood around his nose. His teeth were fine. He kept nibbling my gloves.

I put him back in the yard and got a little pet carrier to put him in. Once in he is just sitting there. I put in water and a few veggies. He is just hanging out right now.

If he is fine in the morning I'll let him loose if not I'll put him down. He was not bit by anything or hit by a car. I have never seen one fall out of a tree. What would cause him to bleed from the nose and act screwy?
That is all...

Maybe he got into some rat poison.

In any case, handling a sick wild animal could be very dangerous. Bleeding from the nose could be caused by hantavirus or plague either of which can be contracted by handling a sick animal and fatal to humans.

Re: Squirrel DOOM
There has never been a single documented case of a squirrel giving a human rabies. Look it up.

OP, sounds like he had a close encounter of the automotive kind. Probably has internal injuries. Comfort it as best you can if you can't afford to take it to a vet.

Crazy. Thanks for the input. I'll shit can the gloves. Of course I washed up after I got him in the crate, and was careful not to lick him.

I'll see if he is ok tomorrow. Maybe he fell out of a tree.

poisoned more than likely. Honestly there are people out there who don't give a fuck about mother nature, and usually these same people kill anything and everything on purpose.

Re: Squirrel DOOM
rat poison makes their brain and organs hemmorage, thus they would be bleeding from their mouth and nose.

Never use rat poison, dogs, cats, or even your children might eat it, not to mention all sorts of other animals. It is a horrible way to kill them.

Vitamin K , administered intravenously is the antidote to the most common type of rat poison. If they are already bleeding badly, it's too late though

One Sunday afternoon, I went in to work to fix a computer problem. I took my 7 month old dog along for company. I was working away when I noticed the dog was into something in the corner of the office. It was a tray of rat poison. I didn't even know it was there.

I rushed the dog to the emergency vet clinic. The dog was OK, but it cost me big chunk of cash. (I don't remember the exact amount, but it was in the hundreds.)

I don't think squirrels take to vegetables. Can you give him peanuts or bread? Maybe even peanut butter on a salt free cracker.

You may need to call animal control first, since you picked him up, and he chewed your glove, its caged, wouldn't let it lose til talking with someone about it. Not normal behavior.

FYI. Most Vets treat wild animals at no cost to you. Check your local Vet. I have taken wild animals in on occasion, they treat them and turn them loose.hf

That was a good idea! He ate the peanut butter. He is perking up a little. Thanks everyone for the advise.

Re: Squirrel DOOM
So the squirrell was better this afternoon, he was still a little off kilter. I set him free and he stumbled around in a straight line for a while.

He sat in the front yard in the sun for at least a half hour then wandered into the neighbors yard. He seems to have difficulty climbing trees, but he can walk straight now.

He might be ok. If it comes up with my maker I did what I could.
