Because of the stress and all...maybe they will leave the doors unlocked. [link to www.pantagraph.com] "At the Pinckneyville Correctional Center, union President Randy Hellman said guards were both angry and fearful when they arrived for their shifts. Some had been crying. “It’s terrible for this to happen in a prison that’s already overcrowded with inmates,” Hellman said. “There’s nothing worse than a staff that’s not focused.” Quinn’s move is not expected to immediately affect state services, and union officials are advising workers is to go about their jobs and stay professional" If they are having to be advised to "stay professional" what sort of unprofessional mutterings are taking place? Any shoes going to get stuffed in the works? Prison unions push for more silly unhelpful laws, and oppose legalization. They want non violent potheads warehoused with them in exchange for your taxpayers funds, much less trouble than those pesky rapists and murderers: [link to www.dailyfinance.com] "The legalization of marijuana can open up the possibility to regulate it. That regulation implies the opportunity to tax the drug, and it also makes law enforcement easier. The localization of the growing process can help to weed out drug dealers, gangs, and cartels as well. If the economy can benefit from it, the government can save and make money from it, and consumers can enjoy it, it might be high time to end the prohibition on marijuana. Maybe we should let the industry catch fire legally and let it blaze. On the other hand, the legalization of marijuana may make it more difficult for prisons to meet their prisoner quota. The prison cost argument is a large one for marijuana legalization -- so how would prison stocks be affected? Interestingly, the argument goes both ways, since many are private institutions reliant on a certain level of crime to remain profitable. Meanwhile, less crime would benefit the taxpayers and federally run prisons, which are already maxed out". |

It's just that there's so much blue in Chicago, it overwhelms the rest of the state. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24747405 I think you are right... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16499015 Are you still living in the 70's? Unions have done nothing but give concessions since the Ronnie Raygun era. It's one reason why the middle class is going down the crapper. Why should the majority pay higher taxes so the tiny minority of union workers get better benefits than the ones paying for it? Maybe that thinking is truly why the middle class is going down the crapper. Oh, and go fuck yourself. |

[link to online.wsj.com] "The Justice Department said Tuesday that it is buying a prison in Illinois from the state for $165 million, defying Republican lawmakers who have sought to block the purchase of the facility, earlier slated to be the new home of Guantanamo Bay prisoners. Attorney General Eric Holder, in a letter to lawmakers, reiterated that the prison wouldn't be used to house Guantanamo detainees, noting the law prohibits transferring inmates from the prison in Cuba to the U.S. He said the facility would provide badly needed high-security prison space, alleviating overcrowding. The maximum-security prison was built in 2001 and was designed for 1,600 inmates but has remained mostly unused. " |
