Several reasons...to illuminate, they burn and create a lot of smoke for cover...also they let whoever know that somethings on it's way.

They are almost never used unless soldiers are hitting the ground in that area.

That's the whole problem. This all seems like a scenario that would get other countries involved, Israel getting a few flea bites and then taking it to the ground and causing enough collateral damage to create a show to rally the Muslim World (See, Muslim Brotherhood) in support of Palestinians, which in turn would give the West an excuse to further their geopolitical strategy of conquering Eurasian economic interests if the Salafists really do go commando.

For all we know the Iranians, Russians, and Chinese would see this all as a Western folly of some sort to capitalize on and egg on the Iranian Mullahs, who work for who knows, and all shit will break loose.

There's just so much going on here that you can't really be certain what will take place in the event of a widening conflict and how it would eventually spread and unfold.

It's obvious that it's just a series of massive imperial chess games that have been going on for centuries and the current lull might be about to end and whatever that really entails right now is unknown to us.

Very possible....commando raids on certain targets...but there is a lot of activity happening right now for sure.

If a ground invasion happens I fully expect Palestinians to get massacred by the IDF to such a degree that Egypt and/or Iran could get involved.

This is just what the Western elites want.

They are looking for a way to dominate Eurasia by getting this whole Middle East conflict thing going to such a degree that they can interfere with the flow of resources, I think.

I think that the US wants to interrupt the flow of Balkan oil pipelines? While at the same time slowly becoming more energy independent in the U.S. (drilling, natural gas) and while dominating the flow of resources globallly, not necessarily stealing them, will be able to dominate the market with its own exports in the future.

Another theory to consider.

This isn't all that uncommon over the years. It will be brokered to make both parties calm down until it resurfaces again.
