I think he will be back too.
I have 3 outdoor male cats and each will do this at times.I call it 'out cating around'.One is fixed and he does the same thing.One time he was gone for almost 2 weeks and I was sure he was dead but then one morning there he was on the back porch waiting for food as if he hadnt been gone.
He will be back.
