NYC APARTMENT DWELLERS & Beyond: How To Prepare for Hurricane Sandy - [UPDATES on SANDY in Brooklyn]
It's a different setting...nothing like being in a detached house but we all need to take precautions.

I live in a four story bldg on a block similar to this setting:

[link to www.bkmag.com]

According to the NYC evacuation map, (see PDF link in the link below) I'm in a (white) no-evac zone. I'm literally tucked into a nook, surrounded by brick bldgs all around...enough to make the three little pigs happy tounge

Anyway, the hurricane brochure (PDF link below as well) is good to have for last minute check up of what you're missing for your go-bag and emergency supply kit.

I pray for a protection from the Lord, for the hand of God to ease this thing down and do minimum damage and keep everyone safe and sound! May His Will be done, AMEN.

Take care everyone grouphughf

Stay Safe, BDE.

We are praying for you and everyone else.

Even here in Michigan, they are expecting strong winds and rain on Tuesday.

One good thing to make sure you have is a car charger/adapter for your cell phone--in case power goes out.

I just discovered mine was missing a couple of days ago and had to buy another.

Love and hugs to you, and most importantly, God's Peace within your soul.

We're charging everything as of this moment...!

What an odd track this Sandy is taking right?! Take care out there too!

What a blessing that we have our car parked in front of our bldg with a full tank. Not that we're rushing to go anywhere at this point but it's there at least!

Thank you Koffee for the tip hugs!
Love you too hf

I just wanted to pop in and tell you that even if all the generators are sold out, in the automotive section they sell power sources for jumping batteries and most of them have a car charger outlet. We have one and when it's fully charged you can charge anything that will fit a car charger. I'm telling you because not a lot of people know about those and are looking for batteries or generators. I'm gonna try to pop in and tell others too, it might help. Some of them are even awesome enough to have radios on them.
I'm on the West Coast - be safe. :)

Thank you abeliever! Hope your daughter stays safe too!

Is she in a high-rise bldg? Just want to note this:

Residents of high-rise apartment buildings may face special risks from hurricanes even if they live outside evacuation zone boundaries.

If you live in a high-rise building outside an evacuation zone, be prepared to take shelter on or below the 10th floor.

If you live in a high-rise building located in an evacuation zone, heed evacuation orders.

And of course, don't take the elevator, only stairs!

Fill your tub with water, and every clean pot, bottle, etc you have. The biggest potential issue in NYC besides flooding is drinking water. It will be very hard to distribute sufficient water after this storm should there be major infrastructure failures.

Make sure your neighbors do the same. In higher buildings even simply losing power will shutdown water to upper floors. Power loss for an extended period is almost certain.

I'd also urge printing out the formula for oral rehydration solution and having the salt and sugar on hand ready to go. Should you have very young, sick or elderly residents it will help to keep them alive.

Try to get the more fit residents together to check in on people.

Re: NYC APARTMENT DWELLERS & Beyond: How To Prepare for Hurricane Sandy - [UPDATES on SANDY in Brooklyn]
Just talked to a friend who lives on the 53rd floor of a building in NYC. Their building has a fuel cell making heat and electric power for most of the building. So he thinks they'll be okay. (now his monthly maintenance charges don't seem quite so outrageous as I once thought they were!) But they've all been warned that they may have to get down to the 10th floor if windows start blowing out, etc., at the higher levels. People on floors 2-10 are being asked to share with their neighbors if they can do so (space, sleeping on sofa's, etc.) This is a VERY UPSCALE building - one of the most prestigious in NYC. Odd to see them making such a request - but they're doing it!

Remember this storm (depending on how and where it comes ashore) will bring with it sustained winds of 50-70 MPH and gusts of over 100 mph. Tall buildings can only take so much of that kind of pressure before sheathing comes off, glass falls out, etc.

Thanks for the posts everyone!

My internet connection is getting slow as molasses. My kids are getting stir crazy lol. Winds are really whipping here in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. WE had a heavy shower earlier but now it's spritzing. Hope I will be able to post later tonight!

Sitting here a little after midnight...lights on...internet working...actually rather quiet but still whippin' out here!

PRAISE THE LORD!

It's horrible to see how other parts are turning out...especially Manhattan!

I've been getting alerts on my phone just to stay inside. Con Ed did call to say some parts of Brooklyn will expect power outages tonight and that we should unplug major appliances in case of damage. Then they'll call again to say power has been restored.

I heard some sirens a few hours ago but so far...so GOOD!

Will check in the morning...hoping I'll be able to sleep if the gusts slamming my window from time to time don't wake me or worse blink

ANy other Brooklynites? New Yorkers? Please let me know how you're doing so far.

I continue to pray for all who are in Sandy's path hf!

Reposting from another thread:

My mouth is agape at the devastation that's literally surrounding where I live. This crowded nook was a blessing to us once again, thank you Jesus. I'm still shaking my head about Manhattan, Staten Island and especially Breezy Point, Queens...too much verysad

My sister in Staten Island lost power last night. AT least her mother-in-law lived close by and had power so they stayed there. My other sister in Valley Stream, Long Island witnessed a huge MIRACLE...the tree in their backyard ripped out but fell towards the street, opposite from their house!!

:cool96:

It's really painful to see the damage througout NJ too. Continued prayers go out to everyone who's in recovery mode now.

THANK YOU for your prayers again everyone hf
