Re: Help Kitty with abcess!
If you had an open wound it would be easier to treat. A bite is going to be two to four tiny holes. Not enough to get the bacteria out.

Even with a gaping wound, it would need to be flushed twice a day. Confined to an area with skin covering it, it's going to be all but impossible to get it all. It needs to heal from the inside out. Some even need drain tubes in place. Abcesses are painful and the cat might need to be sedated to accomplish it. Pretty sure a vet would put him on some antibiotics, not to cause harm, but to prevent further, even worse, problems.

Some bacteria can cause heart, liver and kidney problems
.

If the cat isn't yours, I wonder if you know the owner, or if a local Humane Society has any funds to help out?

Glad you're helping the kitty, but it's not going to be a one time, kitty is all well, deal. Good luck. Hope you'll let us know how he does.

Thx Nines.

You reminded me the abscess can break the wrong way and pop “in” to the blood stream killing the animal rather quickly.

My cat did not make it even with treatment. Took almost a year for her to die, just chased the infection around till it went to her brain.

She was only 5 years old

Glad Benny is doing better =^..^=

In addition to the wise suggestions above (warm water, salt and peroxide) try applying high quality bentonite clay packs to pull out any more infectionn toxins and help the wound heal quickly. Colloidal silver is also great to finish killing off any infection. (Both clay and silver work better on MRSA/staph infections than any RX) IMHO, everyone should have clay in their home.

Testimonial from AboutClay.com:

Abscess on Cat’s Spine
Doctors as well as vets do not seem to know anything other than what they are programmed with, they get stuck in a box with no windows, and given a script of life to follow, or else. On a Thursday evening I noticed a lump on my cats spine-found a large area of puss. I cut the hair away and applied hydrated clay and Press'n Seal. The next morning I re-dressed the wound with new clay-the puss was reduced greatly, even started to solidify. Took the cat to the vet that evening for an antibiotic shot, just to be on the safe side, I did not get all the clay off but good enough for the vet to look at the wound. Vet wanted to put in a stint (for drainage-did that before, it took a long time to drain and heal. I said no to the stint, too expensive for an unemployed person. The vet told me NOT to use the clay anymore. Of course I did not listen, I knew better. I placed new clay after vet visit. Replaced Saturday Morning-wow, no puss, only an empty hole. Replaced Saturday evening. I Forgot Sunday morning, by evening it hardened so I had to add water and wait for it to re-hydrate. Monday morning it was completely healed. Blessings. - Becky H.

(Dayum, I did it again hit post before comment.)

Chrit, so sorry you lost your beautiful girl :( and hear your urgency in everything you say.
Everybody's face, including kitty faces remind me of coral reef formations, and anywhere in proximity of the head gives bacteria places to hide with very thin membranes in between.
Consider why it is systemic antibiotics seem to not reach tooth, ear or sinus infections. Ever noticed that? Even with course after course of antibiotics.
Generally yes it has to be cleaned, drawn out manually.

Again, can't say how much I understand your love-inspired concerned anguish..and this guy here benefits from what you share with me as well as others to not screw it up should it happen (and will happen) to our furry buddies.

Re: Help Kitty with abcess!
I'll have to be careful here, as this is a major peeve of mine, and I KNOW the OP has the best of intentions...

Please consider seeing a vet. There are dozens of issues with abcesses, depending on their location on the body, the bacteria, and on and on and on, that most people don't know or wouldn't consider. Ask for medical help online and you'll get a thousand different answers are often they're completely wrong, in fact they're eggregiously wrong!

I've been an animal rescue volunteer for 15 years, and in that time I've seen the terrible results of people treating their animals on their own. Everything from trying to treat mange with motor oil to giving cats over the counter pain killers which are poisonous them. Animals cannot metabolize drugs and "cures" the same way people do. If you ask online, you'll find that most people aren't even aware that cats lack the enzyme to digest milk, but because the wives tale of kitties and a bowl of milk has been passed down for so long, if you tell someone that cats shouldn't drink milk, they'll go insane telling you how their cat drinks it and how anyone who thinks differently is nuts.

The people going out of their way to dismiss veterinary care and ranting how "nature takes care of everything" are wildly irresponsible.

Best of luck OP and please tread carefully! Cats are awesome. :)

No worries, and you should know that every cat I've had in the last 40 years was taken to the vet for treatment of an abcess. I didn't go the home treatment route.
Money is an issue right now, so at the very least this guy is getting some relief from the pain and pressure by drawing it out at the wound site.
So no, he won't just get a quick 'n dirty and then forget about it to mess up his organs.
He'll go to the vet.

I respect your experience. Personally I don't go in for "cowboy" remedies, ie., won't ingest colloidal silver for myself or family...diluted topical spraying is ok.

At least you got your message out re how toxic painkillers are to animals as well as petroleum and other cancer-caustic insanity for mange, etc., etc., etc (vanilla to cats chocolate to dogs and other bad ideas).

Have to say though, the economy is causing more than just people suffering and vet costs are significant to the point people have to make painful choices for their animals.
And folks quite often pass on needed medical treatment for themselves for years on end (me), not only b/c of the expense but because drs can be HARMFUL.
^^^I know this because I have a Dr induced condition that I expect to die from. They terrify me now.

But this is about animals, who are not subject to greed and ignorance the way people are.

Re: Help Kitty with abcess!
OK! Good news. I tracked down Benny's owner (not knowing what I'd find) and he's going to the vet.

I was sleuthing out ways to get him to a vet without subjecting him to a bunch of vaccines he may have already had, taking him to the Humane Society and putting a 'hold' on him for 'adoption' to get him treatment (low cost) but then he'd be wearing a chip.

So I gave him a coupla soaks (he's in pain now) and decided to go door to door with the idea I'd pay half the vet bill if that was an issue for his owner.

Found her and she said will get some consults but will take him, and said she'll keep him inside, so at least she knows and has my phone #.
At least now she is aware and wasn't before that his problem is a bit more than she thought it was.

So there it is, at least now the cards are on the table and this guy will get what he needs to get better.

Thanks EVERYONE for your amazing stories and educated advice.

No, Thank you!
I'm only human, it's my biggest flaw.

We must all realize a sink a chair and a pillow are all luxuries of home and a soldiers helmet takes the place of all three.

Re: Help Kitty with abcess!
With all do respect OP, if the cat has a abscess of this stage I certainly don't think the other owners are doing much and maybe they can't afford anything. It may be a huge blessing to help this cat and after is all said and done Benny may just stay close by you. In my opinion with animals that need help/ sick or injured they will seek out help. Jmo though. Good luck, here where I live in Oklahoma city I can get strays sterilized for free* programs and kind vets are out there, by chance are you in mobile Alabama? I can get you in a office and treatment for free.

You are so very kind to make an offer like this, I live in boulder co, and agree with what you say about them finding what they need. People are so damn dense.

He is neutered alright. The lady seemed to have the money, didn't appear to realize he might die from this but she does now. And yes, I had to tread carefully with that ego in the interest of the cat. Man, she had that frosty arrogance I wanted to deck her but didn't let it show.
Such is life, we can't change people.
This is why I can count on just one hand people I bother relating to.
I will go over there tomorrow to see if she is following up
Benny's not much to look at but sure is a piece of work, lol. He deserves better, don't we all.
People with their thick goddam masks, so tedious I can't wait to get away.
