Hers burst before the vet could drain it. We put her on pain meds and antibiotics for 10 days to keep it from getting infected. Total cost was about $120 for the visit and meds. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9043414 OH BROTHER DID YOU WASTE your time and money and put the poor cat thru more shit. all those antibiotics did was kill the good stuff she needed in her gut. Man is so ignorant. Nature always heals the skin/hide abscesses just fine. When it burst was the end of the healing process and your stupid vet should have told you that. get another one that can THINK. the infection occurred with the original injury and the abcess was the bodies healing of the infection. The abscess, once is burst is full of DEAD BACTERIA. It will not even harm the cat when they clean up the mess, its sterile. People, stop depending so much on doctors. Your vet instead of telling you it was done and over, stole your money and harmed the cat with antibiotics that were not necessary and killed off her good bugs in her gut in the process. for shame on the vet. I have been thru at least 100 cat abscesses plus my own. with my own I just let them come to a head and drain out too, its how nature does. I do relieve the pain and help nature out with hot compresses as it begins to form which helps kill the bugs and clear it out faster. If you have a patient cat and you discover the abscess before its about to blow, you can do the same but most cats hole up a bit and don't provide the opportunity until the abscess is about ready to dump anyway. ABSCESS =HEALING NOT ILLNESS. IT EQUALS GOD FIXING THE INFECTION BY WALLING IT OFF AND DUMPING OUT THE DEBRIE OF THE DEAD BACTERIA. Your assuming the cat is healthy but the cat should not have gotten an infection from a bite in the first place. So something has already weakened the cat’s immune system. I’ve seen this type of infection kill more than a few cats in my life slowly and painfully even with treatment. Could be Feline leukemia, Feline aids, cystic kidney disease, urinary tract infection the list goes on and on but this is most likely and effect of a underlying issue. FeLV is running rampant in parts of the country… Last Edited by Chrit on 10/19/2012 12:00 PM I'm only human, it's my biggest flaw. Warm mild salt water is one of the best underrated first aid treatments there is. I know how thin a cat's skin is and temp sensitive. I'd maybe go with 3 parts water to 1 part peroxide since that's strong stuff, you know on human skin you'll get a scar after it does the job. For the rest (antibac oint) I might opt to clean it every day instead, cuz that does end up in the belly. Today's the day, Benny's bump is a bit stinky too. :p |

The cat can't lick behind it's ear to keep it clean so the goldenseal in a small amount is OK. Have use it many times. I have spent a lot on abscesses on cats over the past 30 yrs and found that that the warm soaks and cleaning combined with the alcohol based goldenseal extract to be very sucessful.. Exception would be face wounds on long haired cats that are undetected by their owners..Left too long the infection destroys tissue. Worst place for abscesses is on the spine of a Manx cat with no tail, 3 operations at the Vet's and a semi-paralyzed cat later...taught me to watch for abscesses. My puppy went throught his a while back, and that is what the vet had us do. All that gunk came out and we cleaned it with peroxide once all the puss was out, then alcohol to "dry" it... User ID: 15366081 United States 10/19/2012 04:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | One more thing about the infection, you will have necrotic tissue in and around the wound. This can cause secondary infection, if the area is THAT swollen the dead tissue may have to be removed surgically or it can cause death. The body does not have an auto immune response to its own dead cells. I do care OP, good luck! Snip; Treatment of necrosis typically involves two distinct processes. Usually, the underlying cause of the necrosis must be treated before the dead tissue itself can be dealt with. For example, a snake or spider bite victim will receive anti-venom to halt the spread of the toxins, while an infected patient will receive antibiotics. Even after the initial cause of the necrosis has been halted, the necrotic tissue will remain in the body. The body's immune response to apoptosis, the automatic breaking down and recycling of the cell material, is not triggered by necrotic cell death. The standard therapy of necrosis (wounds, bedsores, burns, etc.) is surgical removal of necrotic tissue. Depending on the severity of the necrosis, this may range from removal of small patches of skin, to complete amputation of affected limbs or organs. Chemical removal, via an enzymatic debriding agent, is another option. In select cases, special maggot therapy has been utilized with good results. Quoting: DawaSatso He's not my cat, but he seems to have adopted me as his "home away from home". I call him Benny..he is very smart and funny and deserves a hand, and of course I don't want to screw him up. On a scale of 1-10 I'd say this is getting to level 6. I'm thinking a warm salt water compress to bring it out (if he'll let me). I have some colloidal silver 500ppm (silver wings brand) which may only help to a point unless I bring out the inflamed 'bump' first. Benny's a really good guy, Any good suggestions? He'll send you kisses! Thanks! Tumeric in the kitty's food will help cure the boils/abcess. If you search on the web, there are lots of sites for help. Bless you for your kindness! |

A bite is going to be two to four tiny holes. Not enough to get the bacteria out. Even with a gaping wound, it would need to be flushed twice a day. Confined to an area with skin covering it, it's going to be all but impossible to get it all. It needs to heal from the inside out. Some even need drain tubes in place. Abcesses are painful and the cat might need to be sedated to accomplish it. Pretty sure a vet would put him on some antibiotics, not to cause harm, but to prevent further, even worse, problems. Some bacteria can cause heart, liver and kidney problems. If the cat isn't yours, I wonder if you know the owner, or if a local Humane Society has any funds to help out? Glad you're helping the kitty, but it's not going to be a one time, kitty is all well, deal. Good luck. Hope you'll let us know how he does. |
