Help Kitty with abcess!
Hey guys, I could use some useful advice for a kitty that has shown up with a bite/abcess developing behind his ear.
He's not my cat, but he seems to have adopted me as his "home away from home".
I call him Benny..he is very smart and funny and deserves a hand, and of course I don't want to screw him up.
On a scale of 1-10 I'd say this is getting to level 6.

I'm thinking a warm salt water compress to bring it out (if he'll let me). I have some colloidal silver 500ppm (silver wings brand) which may only help to a point unless I bring out the inflamed 'bump' first.

Benny's a really good guy, Any good suggestions? He'll send you kisses!
Thanks! grinning

My cat had one of these a couple of months ago. It will have to be drained. Hers burst before the vet could drain it. We put her on pain meds and antibiotics for 10 days to keep it from getting infected. Total cost was about $120 for the visit and meds.

Re: Help Kitty with abcess!
these burst and heal themselves all by themselves. Just clean him up when you discover the mess. the abscess is PROOF his body is walling off the germs. It is proof He is fine. Nature is working. do not go spend money on getting it drained. I have never had to do anything more than clean up one of my cats after the burst. I had a cat who earlier this summer had one so big it was the size of 2 eggs and it drained a big mess and healed up fine and she was never ill from it other than the pain of it as it grew.

No from my experience of 60 years you do not need a vet, Nature is a wondrous doctor in this regard. See my post above. It will burst, drain, and the skin will heal back after the burst just fine. This is a skin abscess and nothing bad will happen from it.

Yep, even if the “bump” goes away the infection will continue to attack the cats system internally. The fact the cat even has an infection may mean there is an even deeper underlying issue beyond just the bite itself. GL

OH BROTHER DID YOU WASTE your time and money and put the poor cat thru more shit. all those antibiotics did was kill the good stuff she needed in her gut. Man is so ignorant. Nature always heals the skin/hide abscesses just fine. When it burst was the end of the healing process and your stupid vet should have told you that. get another one that can THINK. the infection occurred with the original injury and the abcess was the bodies healing of the infection. The abscess, once is burst is full of DEAD BACTERIA. It will not even harm the cat when they clean up the mess, its sterile. People, stop depending so much on doctors.

Your vet instead of telling you it was done and over, stole your money and harmed the cat with antibiotics that were not necessary and killed off her good bugs in her gut in the process. for shame on the vet.

I have been thru at least 100 cat abscesses plus my own. with my own I just let them come to a head and drain out too, its how nature does. I do relieve the pain and help nature out with hot compresses as it begins to form which helps kill the bugs and clear it out faster. If you have a patient cat and you discover the abscess before its about to blow, you can do the same but most cats hole up a bit and don't provide the opportunity until the abscess is about ready to dump anyway.

ABSCESS =HEALING NOT ILLNESS. IT EQUALS GOD FIXING THE INFECTION BY WALLING IT OFF AND DUMPING OUT THE DEBRIE OF THE DEAD BACTERIA.

Yes, this is how I've handled my own cats in the past (don't have one at the moment, last guy passed at 17).

This fella isn't mine though and at this point it occurs to me there might be a more direct approach firstaid-wise since this is a common occurance with parttime outdoor cats.

Other thing is to send him home with a strong hint (gauze patch) LOL! :D

Your assuming the cat is healthy but the cat should not have gotten an infection from a bite in the first place. So something has already weakened the cat’s immune system. I’ve seen this type of infection kill more than a few cats in my life slowly and painfully even with treatment. Could be Feline leukemia, Feline aids, cystic kidney disease, urinary tract infection the list goes on and on but this is most likely and effect of a underlying issue. FeLV is running rampant in parts of the country…

Hot but not too hot moist compresses to cause it to "point" , then it will open and then clean it by dousing it with hydrogen peroxide and then a good antibacterial ointment(hard to keep on a cat without a fan collar). Keep it clean and open and it will quickly heal. Wash your hands before and After each treatment.

Now that's disgustin'! I honestly think the answer lies somewhere in the middle, you know, where it's located in this case behind his ear.
To be honest I would find it hard to let it get that extreme, and there is always that chance it could go systemic which is never a good outcome.

I appreciate your input, and am with you that drs have a tendency to overstate or miss the point most often.
Still, I'd like to lessen the length of time he will feel pain...
...not so good to let an animal suffer day in and day out like that. Can't do that.

^^^This sounds like common sense, thanks! Worth a try. Warm mild salt water is one of the best underrated first aid treatments there is. I know how thin a cat's skin is and temp sensitive.
I'd maybe go with 3 parts water to 1 part peroxide since that's strong stuff, you know on human skin you'll get a scar after it does the job.

For the rest (antibac oint) I might opt to clean it every day instead, cuz that does end up in the belly.

Today's the day, Benny's bump is a bit stinky too. :p

Very sweet of you. No I don't think vets are evil.
But they do want people to think a vet is their ONLY option when a little secret is in some cases you can treat yourself with a good deal of success.
Of course I'm not going to be stupid about this and intend to do right by him.

However not once in my entire LIFE has a vet done a service for free, never. :(

First want to say, good for you for being so Observant and Caring..Then I'll add a little advice..Which is do keep doing the warm soaks with water and peroxide to keep the abscess draining.

I also use a little alcohol based herb extract like goldenseal to dry the wound ounce it is all drained and healing.

The cat can't lick behind it's ear to keep it clean so the goldenseal in a small amount is OK. Have use it many times.

I have spent a lot on abscesses on cats over the past 30 yrs and found that that the warm soaks and cleaning combined with the alcohol based goldenseal extract to be very sucessful..

Exception would be face wounds on long haired cats that are undetected by their owners..Left too long the infection destroys tissue.

Worst place for abscesses is on the spine of a Manx cat with no tail, 3 operations at the Vet's and a semi-paralyzed cat later...taught me to watch for abscesses.

I treat any wound on my animals with the warm soaks with peroxide and water...opens the puncture wounds so they don't abscess..Saves a lot of grief.

Take a warm to hot wet cloth, hold in on the absess, keep warming the cloth and putting it back on the absess and it will drain. My puppy went throught his a while back, and that is what the vet had us do. All that gunk came out and we cleaned it with peroxide once all the puss was out, then alcohol to "dry" it... Hopefully this helps.

Re: Help Kitty with abcess!
I have seen some amazing things with vets, I like old-school horse vets the most, and bird vets are second. After all when you’re talking horses and livestock you’re talking LOTS of money and when you talk parrots you’re talking life spans longer then a humans, these guys care a lot. They are not out to make money they are out to help the animal they respect for a life time.

One more thing about the infection, you will have necrotic tissue in and around the wound. This can cause secondary infection, if the area is THAT swollen the dead tissue may have to be removed surgically or it can cause death. The body does not have an auto immune response to its own dead cells.

I do care OP, good luck!

Snip; Treatment of necrosis typically involves two distinct processes. Usually, the underlying cause of the necrosis must be treated before the dead tissue itself can be dealt with. For example, a snake or spider bite victim will receive anti-venom to halt the spread of the toxins, while an infected patient will receive antibiotics.

Even after the initial cause of the necrosis has been halted, the necrotic tissue will remain in the body. The body's immune response to apoptosis, the automatic breaking down and recycling of the cell material, is not triggered by necrotic cell death.

The standard therapy of necrosis (wounds, bedsores, burns, etc.) is surgical removal of necrotic tissue. Depending on the severity of the necrosis, this may range from removal of small patches of skin, to complete amputation of affected limbs or organs. Chemical removal, via an enzymatic debriding agent, is another option. In select cases, special maggot therapy has been utilized with good results.

Re: Help Kitty with abcess!
If you had an open wound it would be easier to treat. A bite is going to be two to four tiny holes. Not enough to get the bacteria out.

Even with a gaping wound, it would need to be flushed twice a day. Confined to an area with skin covering it, it's going to be all but impossible to get it all. It needs to heal from the inside out. Some even need drain tubes in place. Abcesses are painful and the cat might need to be sedated to accomplish it. Pretty sure a vet would put him on some antibiotics, not to cause harm, but to prevent further, even worse, problems.

Some bacteria can cause heart, liver and kidney problems.

If the cat isn't yours, I wonder if you know the owner, or if a local Humane Society has any funds to help out?

Glad you're helping the kitty, but it's not going to be a one time, kitty is all well, deal. Good luck. Hope you'll let us know how he does.

Thx Nines.

You reminded me the abscess can break the wrong way and pop “in” to the blood stream killing the animal rather quickly.

My cat did not make it even with treatment. Took almost a year for her to die, just chased the infection around till it went to her brain.

She was only 5 years old

Re: Help Kitty with abcess!
I use fish antibiotics for infections with my cats. If you google fish antibiotics you can find dealers that will sell you these items. The most common ones used are amoxicillin and tetracycline. It will take some time to be mailed--but I have used these also on myself. You can also google the dosage amounts. I suggest amoxicillin because the cats can't taste it --they can tetracycline. I mix it in food or if they are too sick, i mix it in salmon or tuna juice and put it in a syringe in their mouth. For what you are have I would suggest (because this is a large abscess) at least 250 mg 2 times per day. If and when you see results you can start cutting back.

Re: Help Kitty with abcess!
First want to say, good for you for being so Observant and Caring..Then I'll add a little advice..Which is do keep doing the warm soaks with water and peroxide to keep the abscess draining.

Ha!Ha! I thought this thread was dead until I checked this morning, WOW YOU GUYS THANK YOU ALL FOR SHARING YOUR WISDOM BASED ON EXPERIENCE.

BENNY'S PROGRESS REPORT: He's better and responding but of course we're not done. Just since yesterday results are productive with 3x soaks with warm salt water and diluted peroxide.
Will stay on top of this and not become complacent and yes I will take him to the vet if it appears at all incomplete.
Goldenseal and another poster mentioned amoxicillin. That sounds right.

Amazing and caring you are.
What a doll!

Nine, I hear what you're saying. Yes, I will change my approach the minute it appears necessary.
If I did go the amoxicillin route Benny goes home with a note attached so there's no risk of accidental double dosing.

Heck, might even keep him here until all seems well.

Never encountered free treatment by a vet, so if he needs it I'll have to do without other things for a month. That's how it goes sometimes.

Sure is nice to discuss something that evokes people's goodness for a change, isn't it?
