It is nowhere near the mass of Jupiter. Lets put it this way. Halley's Comet would be a speck of sand and this newfound comet would be a grapefruit. It's nowhere near the mass of Jupiter. It doesn't matter how big its coma is. Comet Holmes at one point had a coma that rivaled the sun in size. That does not mean Comet Holmes rivaled the sun in mass. That's absurd. |

You idiot [link to www.popsci.com] NASA has many jobs and one of them is "comet hunting"...or are they spending money building a "Giant Harpoon to Hunt Comets" just to make you look stupid? Don't call me an idiot, did you even read the fucking link? "The overarching idea: to fly a spacecraft close enough to a comet that it can fire a harpoon into the comet’s surface, acquire material samples from within it, and recover the samples to the spacecraft for return to Earth." They're talking about building a literal harpoon to literally attach a spacecraft to a comet in order to study it. They are not talking about building a telescope to hunt for new comets. That's a job already being done by many telescopes around the globe, including those used by ISON. That is not what your article is talking about at all. Learn to read, then maybe you can get a job and not have to sponge off your mother in her basement anymore. *Oh wait, you're another leftover elenintard, no wonder you can't read your own link and instead falsely accuse me of being an idiot. Guess you're still butthurt about how right I was. :thassabutthurt: You said "Comet hunting is not NASA's job". I read it idiot did you? You are the one with the sore rear...and not just from TBag "Comet Hunting" is why that Harpoon was built. Call it whatever you want, but I was right and you are wrong. You are jusr a little guy who can not stand being wrong...get used to it moron Wow, you're doubling down on your stupidity I see. Comet hunting means to hunt for new comets, not fly a spacecraft to one comet and attach it with a harpoon. The latter makes for a cute story, but that is not what the term means in amateur or observational astronomy. THIS is what comet hunting is: [link to www.nightskyhunter.com] You tried to quote mine an unrelated article about a future NASA mission to send a probe to a comet and I busted you on it. You were dead wrong once again, which is a recurring pattern with you. Apparently your epic fail with Elenin taught you nothing. Geez people, what could you possibly gain by attacking a person who is constantly replying in many threads with facts and answers. It's great you might have a differing opinion, but personal attacks within this thread across many pages are not welcome here. Dr. Astro, thanks for what you do, you are a patient man to put up with the trolls. Telescope, and even then only with a moderate sized telescope and sensitive camera. In today's day and age it is getting harder to find a consumer camera that has the ability to lock open the shutter without battery drain. Very few cameras of the digital variety have this feature of low light and long term open aperture. I use a Nikon D80 with a tokina aspherical for capturing the universe, but even that camera requires an extra set of batteries for more than 2 hours of astrophotography of different targets, because the shutter lock feature requires battery power unlike many film cameras that you could manually lock open the shutter and the film would do the rest. As a person who regularly shoots long term exposure night shots, I recommend a good sturdy tripod, a shutter release cable to keep the jitters out of the image, and a decent set of good glass ( lenses ) with lots of practice. Star trails are common if you can't track earth rotation, most cameras start to show star trails at just over a minute... Blowing the shot. Hope this helps those who want to shoot at night. I have three batteries for my Canon XTi. I also use a modified Samsung SDC-435, a Mallincam Hyper Color Plus, and an Atik Titan-C. Keeping my laptop powered for autoguiding is actually the trickiest part. I need a bigger deep cycle battery for when I'm out in the sticks away from all the light pollution. |

Unfortunately, I cannot mate the camera I have to the dobsonian telescope I use. I can for land shots, but not the heavens as it doesn't track and the modifications to make it track just doesn't justify the end result. A good camera and a good tripod with excellent glass will work just fine for 90% of the people wishing to capture the heavens in the next 15 months. There are plenty of videos on the Internet for those readers here to learn about night sky exposure methods, I encourage people to practice now and understand how amazing the heavens on film can be. Headed out, work calls. Tom Kay's When the Comet Runs attempts to divine what this celestial event might bring with it. Kay does not claim to be a prophet, but he is adept at interpreting and integrating the prophecies of the Bible, Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce, and contemporary prophets like Gordon-Michael Scallion. Kay weaves this potpourri of prophecy into an illustrated tapestry of the future, revealing a variety of images from earthquakes--like "the big one" due hit California--to an approaching spiritual transformation of the entire human race. |
