Re: Daylight Comet coming SOON
I think it was viewing comet Hale-Bopp, through a pair of binoculars, that made me decide to buy a decent telescope. I wanted to have a proper instrument to watch the next one.

We haven't had anything as magnificent to view since then.
Looks like this one could be great viewing!

Oh...and Doc.

I was just starting into amateur astronomy when Hale-Bopp showed up. Unfortunately I was also in the middle of a move and my telescope was in storage while Hale-Bopp was at its best, but it was very impressive even in binoculars. This time I'm going to get pictures of the interloper. I'll try not to let the skunks get to me.

From Spaceweather.com: This is quite possibly a 'new' comet coming in from the Oort cloud, meaning this could be its first-ever encounter with the Sun.

OK Astromut, serious question.....how can they acurately predict the trajectory/flightpath of this comet when it is still so far off and has only been tracked for such a short time?
Can they honestly already say that it will miss our sun or earth?

Gravity works. We know the approximate position and velocity of the comet to a degree that is accurate enough to easily tell that it won't hit earth or the sun. I was able to tell that the Curiosity rover was going to reach Mars even just based on a few pictures I took of it only hours after it left earth, 254 days before it reached mars.

Re: Daylight Comet coming SOON
A 17th mag. comet in the constellation of Cancer that was discovered last week and confirmed and announced today:

2012 S1 ISON (an observatory project name, not a person).
This comet will pass the sun in November, 2013 and then approach even closer to earth by Dec. 29th 2013

The projected magnitude of this comet on November 29 is going to be nearly MINUS 7 (-7.0).

Hale Bopp, according to Wikipedia, made it up to a magnitude of +2 and it was quite bright!  -7 is crazy bright.

This will be a history maker.

There. I emphasized the relevant portion for you. Actually we do have some pre-discovery images that it was found on and therefore we do have the orbit nailed down pretty well in this case. The 1-sigma uncertainty in the inclination, for instance, is about a quarter of a degree and the 1-sigma uncertainty in the time of perihelion passage is a little more than half a day. So yes, the values are approximate, but accurate enough that your concerns are not an issue.

Re: Daylight Comet coming SOON
I'm going to point out that I've been watching a lot of "electric universe" videos lately and also trying to understand the rumored wave of energy that has been shown to occur in our galaxy leaving behind tell tell traces of its past occurrences.

I'm not asking you to swallow hook line and sinker what this video shows you, but the videos put out by this group as well as Teslas' theories about an electric universe has me thinking differently lately about dark matter, gravity, mass, anti matter, magnetism and a host of other things that are very hard to learn more about.

Check this link out:

[link to www.youtube.com]

Give me you thoughts on this matter please, and whether you think this comet could be part of the electric universe.
 Quoting: Redpaw360

All "matter", at its core, is simply a quantum charged state.

At our perception level, a rock looks like a rock. But from the quantum perspective, its an array of charged states interacting with one another.

It could be argued that the whole of the known universe has it's own charged state.

Something you might be interested in reading about. Look up the alpha state in physics.

For instance. The "laws" of physics that make our reality a reality, appear to change value slightly over the expanse of the Cosmos.

In other words, if one could peer onto the whole of the Cosmos from outside, the alpha properties of physics would have a positive value one half (Cosmic North Pole) and a negative value on the other (Cosmic South Pole)

ohyeah

So the Cosmic North would be slightly different, from a physical standpoint than the Cosmic South.

Oh man! I can't wait to tard out to this comet, elenin was just sooo anticlimactic. Here's something else to help crank up the doom. A mother shipton prophecy that reads:

A fiery dragon will cross the sky
Six times before this earth shall die
Mankind will tremble and frightened be
for the sixth heralds in this prophecy.

For seven days and seven nights
Man will watch this awesome sight.
The tides will rise beyond their ken
To bite away the shores and then
The mountains will begin to roar
And earthquakes split the plain to shore.

And flooding waters, rushing in
Will flood the lands with such a din
That mankind cowers in muddy fen
And snarls about his fellow men.

He bares his teeth and fights and kills
And secrets food in secret hills
And ugly in his fear, he lies
To kill marauders, thieves and spies.

Man flees in terror from the floods
And kills, and rapes and lies in blood
And spilling blood by mankinds hands
Will stain and bitter many lands

And when the dragon's tail is gone,
Man forgets, and smiles, and carries on
To apply himself - too late, too late
For mankind has earned deserved fate.

His masked smile - his false grandeur,
Will serve the Gods their anger stir.
And they will send the Dragon back
To light the sky - his tail will crack
Upon the earth and rend the earth
And man shall flee, King, Lord, and serf.

But slowly they are routed out
To seek diminishing water spout
And men will die of thirst before
The oceans rise to mount the shore.

And lands will crack and rend anew
You think it strange. It will come true.

Wow! Coming pretty close to Earth also, .0125 is pretty close for a comet, with a 1.0 eccentricity? Hmmmmm...

Coming .0125 from Earth with a 1.0 eccentricity ..better hope its not off by much.

This would be considered a near miss actually.

No wonder it's going to be so bright, its almost on our doorstep.

It's a little frightening because you don't seem to understand astronomy. A comet's physical nucleus is asteroid-like in size. It's not coming anywhere near here. That distance is also much larger than the coma will be, but even if it weren't it wouldn't matter. It's not a hazard.

Furthermore, an impact of the magnitude needed to deliver enough delta-v to put it on impact course would necessarily destroy the comet, for it to be put on such a course if it could magically survive would be beyond unlikely (if you randomly gave the comet the right delta-v in a random direction it would miss unless the thrust were applied in precisely the right direction - hitting a target from that distance even deliberately is extremely difficult and usually requires mid-course corrections), and lastly, an impact of that magnitude is extremely unlikely anyway.

Venus will be closer at the same date.

I call bullshit. You lie. NASA intentionally launched the rover away from MARS and corrected the orbit later on.

[link to www.space.com]

NASA launched the $2.5 billion Curiosity rover on Nov. 26. The car-size rover is designed to study Mars' vast Gale crater to determine if the region is, or once was, capable of supporting microbial life. The six-wheeled robot carries a nuclear power source and 10 science instruments — including a rock-zapping laser — to perform the mission.

Wednesday's course change was required because NASA intentionally launched Curiosity away from Mars at the mission's start in order to avoid any chance that parts of the spacecraft's Atlas 5 rocket could hit the Red Planet and contaminate the Martian surface. [Photos: Curiosity Rover Launches to Mars]

"We do that on all of our missions to Mars to protect the planetary environment there," Amador said.

To put the rover back on track, mission managers commanded Curiosity to fire its eight rocket thrusters to change the spacecraft's velocity by about 12.3 mph (19.8 kph). The change places Curiosity on a path that will approach 25,000 miles (about 40,000 km) closer to Mars than before, and about 14 hours earlier than the previous course.
