I think it was viewing comet Hale-Bopp, through a pair of binoculars, that made me decide to buy a decent telescope. I wanted to have a proper instrument to watch the next one.

We haven't had anything as magnificent to view since then.
Looks like this one could be great viewing!

From Spaceweather.com: This is quite possibly a 'new' comet coming in from the Oort cloud, meaning this could be its first-ever encounter with the Sun.

OK Astromut, serious question.....how can they acurately predict the trajectory/flightpath of this comet when it is still so far off and has only been tracked for such a short time?
Can they honestly already say that it will miss our sun or earth?

Gravity works. We know the approximate position and velocity of the comet to a degree that is accurate enough to easily tell that it won't hit earth or the sun. I was able to tell that the Curiosity rover was going to reach Mars even just based on a few pictures I took of it only hours after it left earth, 254 days before it reached mars.

A 17th mag. comet in the constellation of Cancer that was discovered last week and confirmed and announced today:

2012 S1 ISON (an observatory project name, not a person).
This comet will pass the sun in November, 2013 and then approach even closer to earth by Dec. 29th 2013

The projected magnitude of this comet on November 29 is going to be nearly MINUS 7 (-7.0).

Hale Bopp, according to Wikipedia, made it up to a magnitude of +2 and it was quite bright!  -7 is crazy bright.

This will be a history maker.

This newly discovered comet, twice the size of jupitor, which is massive, heading for our sun.

I'm going to point out that I've been watching a lot of "electric universe" videos lately and also trying to understand the rumored wave of energy that has been shown to occur in our galaxy leaving behind tell tell traces of its past occurrences.

I'm not asking you to swallow hook line and sinker what this video shows you, but the videos put out by this group as well as Teslas' theories about an electric universe has me thinking differently lately about dark matter, gravity, mass, anti matter, magnetism and a host of other things that are very hard to learn more about.

Oh man! I can't wait to tard out to this comet, elenin was just sooo anticlimactic. Here's something else to help crank up the doom. A mother shipton prophecy that reads:

That is not how close it is getting to earth. Its close approach distance to earth is 0.4291 AU

It's a little frightening because you don't seem to understand astronomy. A comet's physical nucleus is asteroid-like in size. It's not coming anywhere near here. That distance is also much larger than the coma will be, but even if it were it wouldn't matter. It's not a hazard.

Furthermore, an impact of the magnitude needed to deliver enough delta-v to put it on impact course would necessarily destroy the comet, for it to be put on such a course if it could magically survive would be beyond unlikely (if you randomly gave the comet the right delta-v in a random direction it would miss unless the thrust were applied in precisely the right direction - hitting a target from that distance even deliberately is extremely difficult and usually requires mid-course corrections), and lastly, an impact of that magnitude is extremely unlikely anyway.
