Weather DOOM in NH Leads to Large Scale Tree Trimming by.... NH State?
Hey all. I'm taking time out from my other thread to discuss something that's happening with almost frighteningly increasing frequency in New Hampshire.

Microbursts have been popping up all over the place. Now, microbursts are actually something that a lot of folks didn't even know about. They may have once had a sort of vague notion of them, but most have been, "What's a microburst?"

[link to phoenix.about.com]

A microburst is a small, very intense downdraft that descends to the ground resulting in a strong wind divergence. The size of the event is typically less than 4 kilometers across. Microbursts are capable of producing winds of more than 100 mph causing significant damage. The life span of a microburst is around 5-15 minutes. [more at link]

Lately in NH [meaning the last couple of months], I have been hearing constant talk of microbursts. I have now been in the midst of THREE, myself.

This is something that, while not NEW to NH, is absolutely unprecedented in the amount, number, and consistency of them lately.

Here are a few links, please do a google search, you'll be surprised to find how much comes up for "NH microburst".

[link to news.yahoo.com]

[link to news.yahoo.com] [this one has been removed for some reason... it was about the Tilton MB]

Tilton microburst, might get through this time: [link to news.yahoo.com]

Now, these are only a FEW of what have made the News.

BUT NOW HERE IS WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING!!

For the last four months, I have noticed that all of a sudden, there are Asplundh trucks all over the place. A tree trimming service, for those who don't know.

What they have been doing is cutting away trees from near power lines. This activity is WIDESPREAD throughout my local area of Stratham, Portsmouth, Greenland, Rye, etc. I don't know if this is NH state doing this, or what... OR where they got the money to do this??

Anyway, it is a massive, major undertaking. They are even going down side streets, not only major streets, such as 33 and 108.

I live off of 33, and they have done a lot of hardcore trimming. In the 7 years I've lived in NH, I've seen nothing like it before. I've seen some trimming, sure. But NOT LIKE THIS. They are mutilating trees on a large scale. You practically can't go anywhere anymore without running into Asplundh trucks and being flagged past their work of removing tree limbs from anywhere near power lines.

Now, don't misunderstand... I'M GLAD! Very glad that they are doing it!

BUT... it says to my paranoid self that THEY KNEW we were going to have unprecedented weather. Why such a massive [and I do mean massive] undertaking in trimming trees just weeks before large numbers of microbursts are popping up?

And there are a LOT of microbursts happening that don't make the News. The three that I experienced weren't in the News, but people all over here are talking about it. Currently, everyone I speak to on a regular basis, and many I have just struck up chats with, either have been in one or know someone who has... and I'm talking in the past few weeks alone.

And all the local NH-ites [born here] state that "this isn't something I remember from childhood." It's not like growing up in NE or KS and just always experiencing tornadoes... this is a new thing here for there to be microbursts on a REGULAR BASIS!

Yes, yes, I know... all anecdotal. But I could take some pics of the massive scale tree trimming tomorrow if people want. Do some googling for microbursts in NH... there have been tons lately!

SOMETHING is going on, and I can't believe that they didn't KNOW! The timing is just far too coincidental, I'm sorry.

Anyway. Perhaps others from here will chime in on whether or not there's large scale unusual tree trimming in their area.

Re: Weather DOOM in NH Leads to Large Scale Tree Trimming by.... NH State?
My mother-in-law was in the Tilton microburst. Out in the parking lot of her work, the wind picked up a big Harley-Davidson and rolled it all over the parking lot like it was a toy. The automatic doors were ripped open by the wind and papers and things flew out. They had to hold the doors closed against severe winds, and usher people to the back of the store.

And these are just a few of the stories people have been telling about the multitudes of microbursts happening here.

New Englanders don't really call the News about stuff, so I imagine that's part of why it's not "news" that this is going on...

But they talk and talk about it, and the census is that "this is absolutely not typical NH weather".

The MB I experienced on Lake Winnisquam was so powerful that we were only 20 feet from the water, and the wind and rain were coming down horizontally... so heavy we couldn't see 10 feet across the lake.

The waves looked like ocean waves and were whipped into an intense frenzy, with water sheering off of them like a hurricane on the ocean instead of a storm over a lake.

There were branches down, power was out...

I've experienced tornado weather and severe tropical storms, and this was worse than a tropical storm, but not as bad as a tornado.

Many of these that aren't making the News. Which is a bad thing in that I know you all want "proof" of what I'm saying. But please look at the Youtube above, the person there even mentions that THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

And these things are all over the place now. It's beyond noticeable!

Re: Weather DOOM in NH Leads to Large Scale Tree Trimming by.... NH State?
Sandi_T, there is clearly something afoot here at home. While I'd prefer not to advertise my address, I'm intimately familiar with the lakes region. I've had my pulse on the local weather for years, particularly since my livelihood is often contingent upon it; And you're not imagining anything. With regard to the tree trimming, it's not unusual. Utility maintenance contractors merely making hay while the Sun shines, as is necessary around here. An ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure, the utilities have gotten wise to the costs incurred when they are reactionary rather than proactive. Since you've become as sensitive to what the media fails to report as the rest of us, you're level of awareness to things such as tree and brush clearing is simply heightened.

That said, I really snapped to attention when a tornado came across my property WITHOUT WARNING like the hand of God. And since I was standing dumfounded in front of a bulging window as it swept so close I could have reached out and scooped up a bucket full of it, I can say with some measure of confidence these events are increasing in frequency and intensity. My most recent observation is the searing intensity of this summer's Sun in the late afternoons, even when the temperatures are relatively reasonable (80's). Of course, I have a missing timber stand, courtesy of the tornado, to thank in part for that. But it's been brutal. The Sun is actually more tolerable at it's meridian height than at 4:00pm.

The tree trimming may be normal in other areas, but it's not normal at all here. Everyone I've mentioned it to all say that they've never seen it being done before, but... what's the big deal?

Now granted that it's a good thing... it's NOT normal for this area, unless the people who've lived here even longer than I have are all wrong.

In the 7 years I've lived in this area, this is the FIRST TIME that they've trimmed like this here.

It's NOT that I'm just noticing it more. I'm very aware of stuff like that, mostly because things that disrupt my driving make me very, very nervous.

And Microbursts aren't normal here, either. Or better said, not to this degree, frequency, or severity.

I don't live in the lakes region, by the way, I live over in the Portsmouth area, which is the coast and near maine.

We actually had one of those at Cocoa Beach, Florida, it was in the news later it came in with sustained winds of 80mph. We didn't know what was happening, tried to pick up our stuff, but we couldn't walk. It took a lot of our belongings..that beach looked like a dump with people's belongings all over the place!
It was sudden and unexpected. Lol, I lost flip flops, a shirt, towels, and a chair.gaahtissue

I didn't think to check the News for microburst in general.

These things are all over the place!

And if other places are getting them and NOT reporting them with the same frequency as NH is... OMG!

I'm sorry, but not normal.

I lived in FL, and I never once heard of a microburst there except out on the water--and usually a waterspout was mistaken for one.

But google microburst news... loads of them!

They've done this in Austin and Corpus Christi Texas that I've seen in the last 10 years and probably longer. It is done at intervals to prevent tree limbs from falling on power lines and is done by the power companies. Many people complained about how they butchered the trees but they don't have recourse as the power lines take precedence.

I work for a electric utility and we have a couple tree services contracted that preform work like that all year.

It is cheaper and safer to the public to trim the trees now then have to go out after every wind storm or in the middle of the night with lineman to repair lines and remove fallen trees.

I'm not doubting your story but it's common practice for this activity in the industry. The crews that we have are working off a list and are several months behind.

It's an ongoing process to try to keep ahead of the miles and miles of overhead transmission and distribution lines.

I agree with and understand the reason it's being done.

What you folks are missing is that IT IS NOT DONE HERE routinely.

AND, now they are suddenly doing it when THERE ARE UNPRECEDENTED NUMBERS OF MICROBURSTS.

Hi Sandi T, yep stuff going on. I live in nyc and while temp right now average for the summer the heat is off the charts. I hate air conditioning and until this year it has to be pushing close to a 100 for me to use it. heat never bothered me. This year multiple days where temp only in the 80's and I have had to turn it on. Never, and I have lived here a long time has this happened where I am using the ac which such regularity.

And honestly?

My first thought was, "it's about fucking time these idiots wised up. I am sick and tired of EVERY YEAR ending up without power for sometimes over a week at a time".

But the timing...

Why'd they finally wise up just a few weeks before massive numbers of microbursts??

Wish they would trim trees in my area. I had to make a call to the police last week to have them look at a tree that had a huge broken dead branch in it. It would have killed someone if it fell in the next storm. It was on someone's property, but over a road.

I have noticed that falling trees on cars or homes have killed more people that anything else in recent storms.

I spent the first 18 years of my life in NH (Nottingham and Exeter), and I recall the Stratham microburst which killed several people some years ago during the town fair.

As such, microbursts something new in NH is wrong... and the OP did not theorize on that matter.

Now, I as I recall say 1982-1995 (my school years), I do not remember a mass tree trimming/downing (and some of my family has spoken how some state routes hand-railed by power lines had whole tree lines moved back dozens of feet from said lines.

And in all my years of living in NH, I can only recall one or two microbursts having ever occurred in the "Golden Triangle" region of the state.

Utimately...power users are paying for this. Grid maintenance is included in the energy rate ...they maybe are trying to stay on top of the tree growth.Non the less,
Microburst are intense and seem to be increasing.

Pro tip: "free" is in quotations as I know it's really just priced into my power bill.

Re: Weather DOOM in NH Leads to Large Scale Tree Trimming by.... NH State?
I haven't noticed here. I wish they'd come out and take care of the trees.

Last Sunday at 2am I had a large tree about 10 feet from my home snap in half and guess what it took down with it? The power lines. In doing so it snapped the utility pole on the opposite side of my house, about 2 feet from the bottom, the pole just broke, slammed into my roof damaging that. I had power lines draped over my roof, laying in both sides of my yard and further down away from my house. Took out my internet as well..for 4 days.

4 days later my neighbors had a large tree snap in half taking out part of their fence and landing in their pool. No power lines this time though.

No microbursts that I'm aware of.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

I am an evil giraffe, and I shall eat more leaves from this tree than perhaps I should, so that other giraffes may die.

No asshole.

My point is trees are mysteriously snapping in half and I don't know why. She mentioned microbursts and a lot of trees in her area being trimmed and thinking something is up (trees are trimmed when they pose a hazard). The microburst thing is interesting and a possibility where I live but seeing as how I was asleep at 2am I wouldn't have witnessed it myself but again, it's an interesting possibility as to what's going on here. Yes, we have them (microbursts) here as well.

Perhaps I should have clarified.

In any case I did go online and check and we did have a microburst in the area the weekend that ^ happened :) Never paid much attention to them before now or realized they could cause much trouble.
