Taking the Plunge
I have been working for a very large logistics company for about 11 years now. This job is the definition of corporate slavery. Everyday starts exactly the same here in my little slice of heaven (cubicle) by sitting down and hitting Ctrl,Alt + Delete (which is kind of ironic) to open my computer to which I have on average 100 to 150 e-mails to respond to. I talk to people from all over the world and there are many language barriers to overcome. I am an Air Export Agent and I ship shit all over the world. And for the record, I am very grateful to have a job like this in the times we live in. And given I did not complete college, there are many people that would kill for the job I have.

That being said, I hate this place. It might as well be a prison. I am one of the youngest here and it seems as every person here hates there job too. But they are in a different position than I as they have family's and kids to put through college. But today I realized I have none of these things keeping me here. I am 31,male, and single. There is absolutly NOTHING keeping me here other than the paycheck and the benefits. Something I have noticed about the common dot, is that they seem to be fine whith whatever turn this country takes and seem to have the mentality of "Oh well, all is lost". "Nothing we can do now".

On another note I know many young folks like myself that are waking up to all of this. We are all in agreeance that life is too short to work like a slave and many do not follow there heart and do what makes them happy for a living. Many also believe the world may end or start over in December. Problem is, none of the people I talk to that are aware of this have made any change in there lives. They continue to do the same 9 to 5 bullshit. If there were people who really believed that the world will end in December, I can assure you most have not done a damn thing to live out these last few months of humanity in happiness and peace.

I for one am done. I can't live like this anymore. And a few weeks ago I took the steps needed to get the ball rolling in order for me to do what it is that I love to do. Not much longer and I will be free of this prison, and I urge all of you to do the same. Take the plunge. It will be worth it in the end.

Thank you. I have been in and out of bands most of my life. But lately I have been getting into Audio Engineering and creating my own Electronica music. I was able to network and get an apprenticeship under a well known DJ here. I just love music. All of it. And that is the only thing I see myself doing for the rest of my life. Making music.

Re: Taking the Plunge
I took the plunge back in April for the same reasons you suggest.

I had the corporate job that I hated but kept me comfortable. I made good money, but spent my days doing something that I couldn't stand. I was stressed out and miserable.

So finally, after wanting to for more than three years, I quit. It didn't make sense to continue to trade my life for money continues to be devalued faster each day.

There was a brief period of doubt and anxiety after quitting my job, where I really thought I'd made a horrible mistake. That lasted for a couple of months, but it's gone now and has been replaced by a peaceful contentment as I now have no doubt whatsoever that leaving my job was the correct choice. It really was the ONLY choice if I wanted to truly live a life of meaning. This has become obvious to me now, but I couldn't see this truth from the trenches at my job, it only became clear after leaving the toxic workplace, from the perspective of looking back.

I think this is part of a process of becoming free. You have to get through that initial wave of fear and doubt that hits you after reclaiming your life. It is like the guardian at the gate, you have to hang in there and get past him without running back to the conformity of another soul-less job.

This what keeps people trapped, they can't get past this guardian. The fear of the unknown is too great.

Anyway, take the plunge, live your life, reclaim your independence.

You know what they say, when you lose everything, you find out what you truly have to hold on too.

I can personally say that I've already lost everything due to a work-related injury that is currently in court deliberation.

I mean, I lost EVERYTHING.

Car, Roof, Health, Livelihood, friends departed from me because I was useless to them now, family even turned their backs to me when I needed them the most.

Want to know what I realized?

I didn't need any of that shit to be happy. Not even family. Wanna know why?

Because when something vacates a place in your life, almost 100% of the time something or someone will step in to take its place.

Usually for the better.

So even though I'm in excruciating pain EVERY SINGLE DAY SINCE SEPTEMBER of 2011, and have lost everything I worked for, I'm happy.

I'm one happy son of a bitch, because I realized what and who really matters to me in this world.

True and I acknowledge that, but in your first post you equate leaving the safety of the cubicle to manual labor, as if there are no other choices available.

Posts like that feed the fear I was talking about. We need to empower people, not frighten them even more.

In reality there are no such limitations. I would propose entrepreneurship as the obvious new career choice, though manual labor (and many other alternatives) are certainly available to those so inclined.
