Anonymous Coward User ID: 17385372 United States 07/20/2012 10:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OK, not my 'friend'! Quoting: thesleeper But, my friend has a friend that works at Allen Canning Co. in NW Arkansas. He said that they canned the last of the green beans in the US this week. Adleast the last that they will receive. Although when I said that my friend was pretty serious about it being the last in the US. No, this guy isn't a 'doomer'. We have had conversations in the past about World events and such. But, no 'doomer' stuff. To err on the side of caution; my Husband and I went and stocked up on some goods. The items we got today were canned in April. On the 11th to be exact! Thats three months to shelf. Not good. Perfect time line to hit the fan in October. Allen's has some of the best canned green beans. They better be for this price ! [link to store.allencanning.com] |

The little food that will be available, will be too high priced for the average person to afford, so there it will sit until the mob rushes in to take whats left. The rich will stay away from supermarkets, never daring to bring any goods out to their cars as the starving people will... well, need I say? |

User ID: 18456813 United States 07/20/2012 10:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | They are predicting at least an increase in price of beans because they are now using beans to feed cattle due to the shortage of grains and corn, beans are a poor substitute and many beans must be used to try meeting the nutritional needs of cattle. West Texas cows get beans morning, noon and night during drought As the record-setting drought strengthens its sinewy grip across Texas, one may wonder what the remaining livestock and wildlife are eating. Across the western half of the state, mesquite beans most likely are a big part of the answer, according to a pair of Texas AgriLife Extension Service experts at Fort Stockton. Dr. Bruce Carpenter, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, and Dr. Alyson McDonald, AgriLife Extension range specialist, said while mesquite beans do have good feed value, it takes an awful lot of them to really make much of a difference to a hungry cow. “Now, for a cow to meet her daily dry matter intake by eating beans alone, she’d have to eat about four 5-gallon buckets of dry beans or eight buckets of green beans. That’s an awful lot of beans.” [link to www.cattletradercenter.com] |

I would not eat them on a boat I would not eat them wearing a coat I do not like these beans in a can Of this I surely wrote ps: wth no dr suess emoticon :( I would eat them here. I would eat them there. I would eat them anytime and anywhere. Inside at a table in the house, or raw from the garden like a mouse. But the beans didn't grow and neither did the corn. So now I sit hungry and forlorn. If only I'd listened when they said the beans were going away. If only I'd saved some for a rainy day. Next time I'll listen I promise you that, so give me some of yours so you won't get fat. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 18907471 United States 07/20/2012 11:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My favorite old family green bean recipe (and with the beef shortage coming, may also use ground turkey, I guess) - all the kids (and adults) really like it Hamburger Pie Cook about 1 lb or 1.5 lb ground beef/meat and drain - if you like, add a bit of fine chopped onion to the meat while cooking. Season with a bit of salt & pepper. Make about enuf mashed potatoes for 3 cups, easy on the liquid (if you use instant, try to at least add a couple real potatoes or it just won't taste as good or hold up as well). Cool the potatoes slightly, and whip an egg white into them so they hold together well in the pie. Salt and pepper season as desired. Open a can of cut green beans (not French cut, tho), heat slightly either in a sauce pan (without liquid with a lid on it on medium heat or medium low) or in a microwave - to remove excess fluid. Drain the beans, and spread in the bottom of a 9x9 pan or something similar - I prefer glass pans, Pyrex, etc. Spread the ground beef over the beans, and then pour tomato sauce over it all evenly as you can. I use the small can of sauce, but you can add a little extra if you like. Gently spread the potatoes over the beans and meat so that it covers to the edges of your baking dish. Place in a 350 oven for about 25 minutes. Open the oven, pull out the dish and top it with about 1 cup of shredded cheddar (I use sharp, for flavor), and replace in the oven to melt the cheese for about 6-7 minutes. Remove from oven to let it set for about 8 minutes, then serve. You can use a spoon, but I prefer a small spatula, messes up the layers less and cuts well through the cheese topping. Goes well with a side of corn or corn on the cob, or corn bread, or salad, etc. Yummy. |

You can also make a double recipe in a larger dish for a larger dinner. Taste good as leftovers, also. |

Quoting: WatchmenOnTheWall The rich will stay away from supermarkets, never daring to bring any goods out to their cars as the starving people will... well, need I say? My opinion is that the rich might cut back on their meat intake depending upon how wealthy they are or more precisely were. The displaced middle class due to ever increasing layoffs and factoring in those who still have employment with those receiving foodstamps will need to alter their diets for better or worse depending upon their thinking. While the poor and lower classes will remain the most consistent and will eat more garbage foods including fast foods that either will go up in price, or be filled with more garbage ingredients. Without a doubt, we will experience ever-increasing robbing flash mobs hitting raids hitting stores and these escapades will increase in violence as anger grows. As far as the wisdom of the rich will also be the actions of the middle class, who are prepared and able to hunker down with food and water during the worst times as hungry desperate people do stupid things. |

Oh, and when I eat it as a leftover, sometimes the tomato sauce is sort of not so there any more, so I like to put some ketchup either on it, or under it, still good to me. |
