They are obviously trying to "slowly" euthanize the affected children. Or they are too dumb to realize. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17917931 I'm sure if 'they' wanted to euthanize them, they could just drop a bomb on them like 'they' do with innocent children in the middle east. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 14625665 United States 06/14/2012 11:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Honestly, we as a society should be ashamed that they still have students to shock and that this for one second being put in a petition. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14142860 Has everyone lost their minds? Have we sunk so low that we are actually debating whether its OK to use shock treatment on special needs children? Our only purpose on this earth is to protect the children and learn compassion. Why has that become so fucking hard for people? alot of these special needs children are unable to communicate with people and therefore have a incredibly hard time learning what is wrong and right. \ Obviously using a high voltage shock is wrong, but i think at a certain point SMALL shocks can be used to help kids. There are people who claim this has been a godsend for their children plz keep that in mind and dont sign a petition that seems to be overkill. I like regulations not prohibitions |

Yesterday it seemed everyone wanted to find out what Trin caught on tape (yes, it was funny) and this thread was basicly ignored. Glad to see some more opening this thread. |

In CERTAIN cases, Shocks can do good. Once again, as another user said, It has to outweigh the risk, and as I said, all parties need to be self-consenting and aware of why it's being done, and there should be an age limit and regulations on who and when it can be used. Not just shock every person being out of control like they're doing. I agree, In this case, it's wrong and should be ha;ted immediately. In other medically controlled and rationalized cases, There's been improvements. It's a real grey area. More black than grey, but still a shade of grey. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17931935 they have done more with sleep deprivation and neurochemistry than any value shock has done to the brain. also, there are a number of studies that show hypoglycemia diets have made remarkable progress with these patients, believe it or not. shock therapy, when used properly is a very minute amount of electric volts (or amps or whatever) while being given insulin. this way, the patient feels nothing. |

Source User ID: 17570205 United States 06/14/2012 08:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This probably isn't a popular opinion, but if you are really interested in helping these kids, please give this a read... In my experience as a Para-Educator working with autistic students some kind of 'shock' device (or other immediate negative reinforcement stimulus) for students that are otherwise unmotivated by positive reinforcement is in the best interest of the student so long as it is used correctly and does no physically harm. To outlaw all 'shock' devices as a knee-jerk-reaction to this case in Mass. is to do a disservice to these kids. Autistic students can be very aggressive. In fact, I have never worked in an industry with a greater number of injuries to staff as a direct result of this aggression. If these students are going to have a chance at all in society and not end up in an institution, they are going to have learn that it is not alright to punch, head butt, scratch, bite, run around screaming, etc., etc., etc... The real job here is behavior modification through good old fashioned conditioning by positive and negative reinforcement....behaviors that are 'good' (sitting quietly, paying attention, non aggression, etc.) are rewarded and behaviors considered 'bad' are punished. Only positive reinforcement is allowed in my school district here in California so, all we can do legally as educators is try to ignore the incessant bad behavior. This works for some, but not nearly all the students. Case in point. I worked with a junior high school student we'll call "H". Although H is only 13, he is already pushing 6' tall and 190 lbs. He can over-power most people around him and often does so in order to do whatever he wants (climb on the cabinets, run into other classrooms, grab reinforcing candy, yell and clap, and grab people by the neck, etc.). Consequently, positive reinforcement is minimally effective. He has already sent more than one person to the hospital with injuries. One day his mother sent in a note and a bottle of squeezable butter. Yes, butter. The note said she had discovered that he was terrified of butter and that she had been using that when necessary as negative reinforcement (only showing him the bottle was enough). With no other options, the behaviorist agreed to allow it. Wow! Now, when he was choking someone, all we had to do was say, "H. Do you want me to get the butter?" and he would immediately stop the behavior and re-engage in whatever he was supposed to be doing. Needless to say, when the district heard about it they forbade it right away. So, he went right back to his old ways. Injuring more people. He is going to end up in a bad, bad place because everyone is so pussyfied and politically correct. I know it looks like medieval torture, but negative reinforcement is very powerful. Working with these students is extremely challenging and conditioning works best when positive and negative reinforcement are used together. The problem is when its in the hands of sadistic or untrained educators or obviously if the negative reinforcement is out of proportion (damaging, too painful for too long). |
