Bigger earthquakes may occur sooner
Study: Bigger earthquakes may occur sooner
BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 7 (UPI) -- An analysis by the University of Colorado-Boulder indicates very strong Himalaya earthquakes might occur sooner than is currently expected.

Seismologist Roger Bilham notes that while the rupture zones of recent major earthquakes are immune to similar-sized quakes for hundreds of years, they could be vulnerable to even bigger destructive temblors.

Bilham and colleagues say the magnitude of last December's 9.3 Indian Ocean earthquake showed scientists a giant earthquake can rupture through a region with a recent history of quakes with magnitudes as large as 7.9 on the Richter Scale.

Possible earthquake precursors identified
BERKELEY, Calif., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- A geophysicist from California's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has identified possible seismic precursors to two recent earthquakes.

Valeri Korneev found a spike in the number of micro-earthquakes followed by a period of relative calm in the crust surrounding the quakes' epicenters. That occurred months before the earthquakes struck.

Although more work needs to be conducted to determine whether other large quakes are foreshadowed by a similar rise and subsequent decline in small-magnitude tremors, Korneev's analysis suggests such peaks may be indicative of the total set of geological stresses affecting the timing and location of large earthquakes.
