Denial of transplants for undocumented immigrants sparks hunger strike. Should they be allowed the surgery?
A group headed by a Salvadoran-born priest are completing the third day of a hunger strike to protest the refusal by two Chicago hospitals to perform organ transplants on unauthorized immigrants who lack health insurance.

"We're a little weak but we're not going to lift the measure until the hospitals agree to talks," Father Jose Landaverde told Efe Tuesday.

Several Latinos with relatives in need of transplants have joined Landaverde in staging the fast at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Anglican Catholic Mission, a church located in the largely Mexican neighborhood of Little Village in South Side Chicago.

They include 35-year-old Mexican Lorenzo Arroyo who, along with his brother, 37-year-old Elfego, is in need of a kidney transplant.

The two siblings and their oldest brother, 39-year-old Francisco, all suffer from a rare illness known as amyloidosis that they inherited from their late mother, who passed away two years ago.

Francisco, the only one of the three with his papers in order, received a transplant through the usual channels.

Any thoughts? Anyone agree with denying them life saving surgery because they're undocumented?

And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

Hey, Debachery. I don't like the idea that anyone would be denied life saving surgery, but I know of so many people that are citizens, WITH insurance, that can't get transplants without huge amounts of cash beforehand. I think it's really about money, not documentation.

Of course, money always comes into play.

Let's say they have the money to pay but you have the illegal and a citizen that both need the organ. Who should get it? The one that has a right to be here or the one that sneaked in or are you indifferent to their immigration status?

Fuck those illegals! They're not even 'entitled' to be here at all, let alone to medical services.

No, I'm not indifferent to their status. I live in West Texas, so no. I don't like what's been happening with all of the hand holding of illegals. I have to go to a clinic to see a doc, our family is retired military. I've been going there for many years, even when hubs was active duty. Most of us call it the welfare clinic, because that's basically what it is. Let me say, we DO have our own insurance, that WE pay for. I have too many stories about illegals in just my little town, I don't think they should have special privileges.

As someone that lived in a foreign country for 5 years, I have to be honest and say, I get really angry with the way things are handled in this country. I had to learn to function in a foreign country, I had to learn the language (at least enough to function), I had to teach my young children what was acceptable behavior. I did all of those things and more out of RESPECT for our host nation.

In our little town, white people that have worked and paid into the system their whole adult life, cannot get disabilty even though they are dying and have nothing else to fall back on. Illegals get it, along with welfare, the first time out. I know this post could easily turn into a rant and that's not my objective.

Money or not I don't think they should be able to get transplants here.

Far too many American citizens that are on the list and someone that broke the law to get here shouldn't get dibs on it even if they have the cash to pay, which the majority don't.

They should be deported immediately where they can take their chances in their home countries.

That's the thing, isn't it? People act like other countries don't have health care, but even 3rd world countries have it. Mexico's can't be that bad, because of all the Americans that go there when they can't get in here. It really is about the money. They can't get the surgery in their home country and it's easier to get the bleeding heart Americans to cover the cost. Of ANYTHING.

I live in New Mexico and I've been a translator for a long time; it's an easy guess how I feel by now. Visit any ER in the Southwest and you'll find it packed to the rafters with filthy Mexicans. Then, because of 'affirmative action' hiring policies, you'll see a Mexican broad at Admissions, most of whom are borderline mentally retarded, signing up all the wetbacks for treatment whilst the Americans bleed to death on the fucking floor! I am not exaggerating. And the wetbacks think they're entitled to preferential treatment.

Now sometimes, this turns out for the best, by accident. Fate intervened to save my clueless mother from a Baxter-special flu shot. A clinic near her had a day reserved for senior citizens to get flu shots for free. When she showed up at the clinic, there was a line of fat Mexicans all the way around the block, with their little bastards in tow, 'demanding' their free shots. The staff speaks Spanish (NM is a state of Spanish - not Mexican - heritage, after all) but the wetbacks pretended not to understand that this service was only for the elderly. So guess what: they had to close the doors to get rid of them and cancel the free-for-seniors day!

I hope every single one of those vermin got their Baxter recipe that day.

Medical in Mexico is FREE. Shouldn't America one of the richest counties have free medical care too?

Also any form of cost control for the useless and toxic medical treatments are blasphemy.

I tore up my organ donation card years ago when Saudi's were buying special treatment for organs. I'd donate to another USA citizen but, not to a foreigner. People will not donate when they hear this crap.

You know what? I don't have a problem with people from other countries, but when they come to MY country, I expect them to follow the laws and customs. I don't want to hear that my ancestors did this or that, they came here in accordance with the laws at the time. They did NOT stow away on a ship and sneak off. They learned the language, the laws, worked very hard and did NOT expect a hand out from anyone. Can today's illegals say the same? That's what I thought, that's what I KNOW.

And you think the illegals are not racist? They are here to steal whatever better people than they have created and they hate your guts because they know that on the best day of their lives, they can never equal you. If you do not stand first of all, for your own blood and your own race, prepare for extermination. That is your first loyalty and you can bet that no other people is going to protect you.

We don't have free medical care.

That's irrelevant anyway.

To get a transplant you are put on a list. Why should a law breaking illegal get an organ, even if it's free, when it should rightfully go to a CITIZEN?

And there just happens to be 2 matching unused kidneys lying around?
Doesn't Mexico offer medical coverage to their citizens?
Perhaps our hospitals should start billing the Mexican Gov't?

The Mexican Gov't would say let them die.

Just wait until all the people that are starving themselves are wheeled into the hospital.

We'll get to pay for that too.
