I’ve pushed the envelope on several plant species, including olive trees. p.s. The olive trees are growing well, but I have my doubts about harvesting any olives. I may try using the leaves for medicinal purposes. Thanks again! Endangered, Ancient and GORGEOUS! and You can have one! wow, i am going to have to get a bunch of these! [link to www.breadandrosesgardens.com] this is food native americans ate and provide a lot of food! one i have had before called sunchoke, or jerusalem artichoke. it is from the sunflower family and grows high like a sunflower with big yellow flowers. but you can eat the roots like potatoes! one plant will give you 6 pounds of food! and they are perennial :) these are really yummy. they do taste quite a bit like potatoes and they are gaining popularity again. i've seen them in trendy places like whole foods. this would be better than potatoes tho because you don't have to replant :) i'm also going to find some of these groundnuts. again, it is a tuber but packed with protein :) 🦋 |

Endangered, Ancient and GORGEOUS! and You can have one! THIS!!!! I'm in Oklahoma, NW of Tulsa up in the Osage hills, and the house we bought and are renovating had this strange little tree planted out on the corner of the yard near the intersection of the streets. It looked like some small evergreen, wasn't maybe two feet tall, but I'd never seen anything quite like it. Then it dropped its "needles" that fall after turning reddish brown, despite my watering, and I figured well, it died. But nope, the next spring fresh new soft "needles". That's been about three years ago and the thing's close to nine or ten feet tall now. It worried me last summer when we had record heat and drought, but this spring it's bright green and healthy and you can see the new growth already. Thank you OP for this post, because by the photos of the foilage and the description of it's behavior with the seasons, I now know what it is. A Dawn Redwood. Now, the semi troubling part. According to the Victoria Gardens site it'll grow to 40 or 50 feet in height, possibly as much 70. That won't be an issue as we've got mature pecans, a black walnut, and several hackberry trees in that range. If however this thing gets as large as the Wiki info, 200 feet tall and who knows how wide, there may be some issues down the road (or even for the road). Last Edited by Okie on 05/06/2012 12:52 AM |

Actually, it says the "spread" can be 100 feet which is the branches and leaves of the canopy, not the trunk. Still very impressive though. Can you imagine the shaded area beneath it to enjoy? |

One of the original sprigs from that re-discovered Chinese one is planted on the lawn at McGill University. It's not huge yet, but it's awesome all the same. |

[link to www.brighterblooms.com] I planted 4 of these late last year and so far this year I've had 6 feet of new growth I bought seeds years ago and had no luck so I bought seedlings and they have worked out great.. I just had to quote this from that site, it is so hilarious: "My sister gave me the Royal Empress Tree as a gift - we had just moved into a newer house with no mature trees. I planted this late in the year and didn't realize that the leaves show up a little later than my other trees. I am sorry to say that I just pulled the "stick" out of the ground planning to toss it in my compost bin. Imagine my surprise when I saw that the roots had been growing. I assumed that pulling the stick out of the ground would have killed it, so didn't follow ANY of the recommendations when replanting and just sort of stuck it in the ground. My husband didn't realize that I had replanted it and accidentally weed wacked the stick, and then ran over the rest with the lawn mover. No fertilizer, no water, no fancy dirt or compost. It grew at least 20 feet that growing season and I can't wait to see what happens this year!" |

Thanks for the information. Quoting: Hermittao Bald cypress looks similar. A Mexican version of bald cypress called Montezuma cypress is a little bit more evergreen and grows faster. I have both in my backyard. I also have Bald-Montezuma cypress hybrids developed by Chinese scientists. We don't even do that here in USA despite the face they are native to North America! Dawn Redwood is native to China! Anyway, they are growing hybrids over there by millions! [link to sfagardens.sfasu.edu] |
