I APPOLOGIZE GLP! TURNS OUT THIS STORY IS NOT TRUE.. IT WAS SOMEONE'S IDEA OF A JOKE... SORRY!

WAL-MART SENIOR GREETER and a Motor Cyclists reaction to this story..

You just have to appreciate this one. Young people forget that we old people had a career before we retired.

Charley, a new retiree-greeter at Wal-Mart, just couldn't seem to get to work on time.....
......

One day the boss called him into the office for a talk.

"Charley, I have to tell you, I like your work ethic, you do a bang-up job when you finally get here; but your being late so often is quite bothersome."

"Yes, I know boss, and I am working on it."

"Well good, you are a team player. That's what I like to hear.”

“Yes sir, I understand your concern and I’ll try harder.”

Seeming puzzled, the manager went on to comment, “It's odd though your coming in late. I know you're retired from the Armed Forces. What did they say to you there if you showed up in the morning so late and so often?"

The old man looked down at the floor, then smiled.

He chuckled quietly, then said with a grin, "They usually saluted and said, ‘Good morning, Admiral, can I get your coffee, sir?"

This is a story from July 2011, but I just heard about it for the first time today and felt it was worth sharing.

See the link for the Motor cyclists reaction to this story
with pictures.

My hubby and I were just discussing why we thought he would become a greeter at Walmart.. we figure, it gives him a purpose, and keeps him in touch with people.. makes him feel good after so many years in the Military.

Nice story M2C.

I see the young ones are questioning the why.

Why would he work - interaction with people and being usefull keeps one young.
Why would he be late - time perspective is different when you get older, much different.

Don't worry young ones, someday you will also get there.

Ya would think the HR spud who hired admiral whats his name would have told the manager and the manager would have told so and so and so on so forth.

Unless the admiral left his military record off the app, he would be well known in that store by reputation.

An Admiral in the US navy is pay grade O-10, with a minimum salary of a bit over $15,000 per month - since that's the salary for 20 years of service and it normally takes considerably longer than that to reach Admiral rank, a more typical amount would be close to $17,000 per month. Depending on length of service, it could potentially be up to $18,675 per month.

I don't think he's doing this for the money.. I think he's doing this to give his life purpose, or to keep in touch with people.. as Madame X pointed out... As you get older, your perspective on what is important to you can change and it probably keeps him younger, mentally and emotionally which must be important to him.

It also seems to me, that he could be donating his wage or a good portion of it, to charities for all we know.

I don't have the answer to that.... I wondered that myself. My thoughts are that they are protecting his privacy. I really don't know. When I googled this story, several sites ran it. So I believe it is a true story, or I wouldn't have posted it.

So true M2C, many workaholics die shortly after retirement for they become lost.

No hobbies, no family left that needs them.
Without purpose in life, there is no life.

I currently see it happening in someone I care for deeply that retired a vibrant man at 80, now 83, he was going downhill fast until his wife became ill and saving her became his purpose in life and he rose to the occasion.

Everyone needs to do in life, it is what we were born to do.

I have a hard time believing someone so well off and in status, regardless of economy or age, would waste their end days greeting the trash that walks into walmart... if money holds any factor at all, everyone serving in the military should reconsider their careers..

AC...541, I have to ask. Who the hell are you? to call Walmart shoppers "trash"!

I agree Walmart has hurt many mom and pop shops, but, they do hire a lot of people, which in it's own way is also good for your communities.. their business practices, I don't agree with.. but, to call people shopping there trash! that just goes way too far.

I found this online.... could it all be a joke? Dang!

"The Admiral pictured in this "joke" is Admiral Robert F. Willard who is the CURRENT, active duty, Commander of U.S. Pacific Command.

Though he looks like a nice, down-to-earth guy, somehow I don't think an active duty United States four-star officer would be real amused at being portrayed as a WalMart greeter. I think the USN would be even less amused.

My aunt inherited land worth in the multi-millions. She retired from working in a small business and has no cash income other than Social Security and some small pasture rental income.

She works as a WalMart greeter so that she can pay her expenses and pass the land on intact to her grandchildren.

(I'm going to be cynical here - I bet they will sell it within the first year of inheriting it.)

I hope you are mistaken.. That land seems to mean a lot to your aunt. I'd imagine she will have some stipulations in her will to ensure the land doesn't get chopped up subdivided and sold.

But what you have just verified is that there are more reasons than we could imagine, for people to continue working well into their retirement years.

But this has made me think about the working elderly as well, and the past lives they've lived. I think there are as many great stories out there as there are seniors working.
