Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku, who is also a senior member of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), came under fire Tuesday for saying that if Japan leaves all its nuclear reactors offline, it would be tantamount to the nation committing mass suicide.

Sengoku, a close ally of former Prime Minister Naoto Kan, made the remarks during a speech to supporters in Nagoya on Monday. “We have to consider what it means to try and live without nuclear reactors. In a way, failing to restart the reactors is like committing mass suicide,” he said, according to Fuji TV.

So why should they sacrifice quality of what life they have left? Everyone else is enjoying nuclear power, why not they?

If it's to save the rest of the world, they might expect payment or resettlement to a safer location. It would be logical. How would you feel if a mysterious triple disaster had affected YOU?

It isn't, once the plant is built and running, and it's permanently "hot" anyway whether running or shut down.

This isn't a decision on whether to build new nukes. It's a decision on whether to waste the ones they have already, for better or worse, in a fully industrialized country that is not rich in natural resources of any sort.

the trouble with nuke plants is that it takes immense amounts of electricity to keep them "safe", even when they are are not operating and in "cold shutodown".
We have a responsibility to the planet and to future generations to decommission (neutralize) these power plants now while we have the necessary energy and industrial know how and organization to do so. There is no guarantee that we will always be as capable as we are today.

a lot of the ones in charged already resigned from their positions (tepco and in their gov), i'm not sure they will commit suicide since they known quite well it was a bad idea in the first place to allow nuclear in japan and especially in this location.

they did it for the money, people ruled under this have no honor and they are not ashamed of what they did to their own people, only scared of the consequences so they are escaping like rats.

only the ones with a sense of honor still do this, you know like the samouraï did in the old times.
