Its a huge Hiking Trail that goes all along the United States and through the eastern mountain ranges. Many people Hike along the trail from start to finish and it takes them all summer. Type Appalachian Trail into youtube. |

I don't know enough to offer advice about jobs, must-see places or such, but I think you should do it. I've done a fair amount of nomadic travel and backpacking (and it sounds like you have, too) and America's no scarier to traverse than overseas. Don't pay attention to all the "You're crazy! You'll be raped and mugged and left to die!" folks. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 6828290 United States 04/15/2012 01:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Since you are talking about finding places to work, that kind of thing, the Appalachian trail, and even better, the Pacific Crest Trail, wouldnt be something you'd want to do. I know the PCT has a season, and it is pretty tough hiking. As far as hiking across america, why not? If you have the means to support yourself, you're in good shape, you should be good to go. I envy you if you decide to do it. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13551805 What do you Americans/Canadians reckon? Would it be hard to find odd jobs along the way to support myself? What would be some must visit places? Input appreciated. You bet! You'll have a great time. And if you get up to Madison...I can direct you to a hostel that still allows Australians. We all breathe the same air. .-.. --- ...- . / .- .-.. .-.. |

It's pretty much from home, to a destination for a short stay, back home. You will have some entertainment value as an Australian, so that will help but the whole 'system' to support proper backpacking just isn't here. Sure, that's out the window if you spend a few month hiking, but as for getting around cities and towns and work and hostels and all the other stuff...but for what its worth, do Europe instead. Work at a ski resort in Colorado, those places are full of Australians. Just hope its a good season. Cold though. Good luck. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1259082 United States 04/15/2012 02:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you want to see America get a car. Preferably an old (60's or 70's) convertible. (Ever read Hunter S. Thompson? Just avoid driving to Elko Nevada at night and watch out for mountain lions hitch hiking rides, lol) It's how this country was set up- infrastructure for the automobile. You can go coast to coast casually in a couple or few weeks. Route 66 is popular and has some sites like the grand canyon along the way. When you've had enough sell the car and go back under. |
