Remember, these are SEEDS that OP is talking about. You can still find organic/non-GMO seeds...you may have to search a little harder.

I work at a small farm that raises pork, and I run deliveries to St. Louis. Every time I take I55 north there's a lovely billboard picturing a corn field on a bright sunny day, blue sky in the background, and a young woman, aspiration in her eyes, pictured in front. The words: "Who grows a safe food supply?" "We do." stretch across the top. At the bottom: "-Monsanto"

It makes me smile.
And sick to my stomach.

I always buy seeds online from sites that sell only Heirloom seeds and have signed the safe seed pledge. Look for them because they are still there for now.

Buy extra and keep them cool. Good barter or life saving for you yours. Learn how to save seeds too.

Good post OP and a whole lot of work, thanks.

Some of those varieties have been around for decades, Monsanto is trying to buy out all the little seed companies.

It would be a good idea to learn how to grow and save your own seed. At some point that may be the only economical way to get what you need to survive.

Can you clarify something?
Many of the seed types listed are fairly well known varieties that those of us who garden have been using for years, that pre-date gmos. If you are saying that these seeds are sold by companies now owned by monsanto (among others) you are undoubtedly right. If you are saying that most of those seeds are hybrids, that will not produce like offspring, you are also correct (not that there is anything wrong with growing hybrids). However, there are several of those types that are not exclusive to monsanto owned seed companies, are not under any patent, and can be sourced through non-monsanto suppliers. Some on the list are even non-hybrid (heritage)types. Not arguing with your intent, just the accuracy.

You are correct, and please check out the link at the bottom of my list - it will answer the questions you pose. Yes, Monsanto has bought the patent on many of the popular brands. If you have heirloom seeds in your possession, go ahead and plant them, but any new purchases will be profitable to Monsanto, and the seeds have likely been genetically modified.

Here is a great place to purchase heirloom seeds, and lots of rare and medicinal varieties:

[link to www.jlhudsonseeds.net]

What I love about this company is they will TRADE seeds. I have numerous persimmon trees on my place, and I'm in the process of validating my seeds for barter. (The guy who runs this company is a seed purist, and before he accepts seeds, he wants pictures of the flowering plant and pressed leaves from the plant.)

suicide

How can one know if the seeds are GMO or not? Do we have to pick only heirloom varieties or would organic designation prevent GMO?

I didn't know food WAS dangerous!!!!!!!!

Besides it isn't even correct English. One can only grow food, they can't *grow* a "food supply". Looks like one more moron in the advertising department.
