Freedom of speech is a governmental concept, not a spiritual one.
I talked about this topic in a different thread reply, but I thought it needing restating as a separate thread.

Even though our government gives us the constitutional right to say what we want to others under the term, freedom of speech, there are some things that should not be spoken or even thought for that matter, if we want to follow the true and righteous path through life. If we are wise, ugly words such as lies, hate, anger, or jealousy should not be expressed. When we say hurtful things to others, we are not spiritually hurting them, but ourselves. The victim of the verbal attack is only hurt when they return the attack with more ugly words of their own.

There is a wise saying that says, "It is not what goes into your mouth that can harm you, but what comes out." However, we all have the right to choose for ourselves.

My point is that controlling what we say to others is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it is a sign of strength and discipline.

I see having discipline concerning what we say as a great virtue.

However, you decide what is right for you.

Peace

Re: Freedom of speech is a governmental concept, not a spiritual one.
It is a spiritual concept and derives from free will.

Now that does not mean one should be verbally cruel to someone else nor should one use crude and foul language as a matter of politeness and civility.

Words can certainly hurt emotionally.

Cruel words simply show more about the speaker than they do about the person those words are aimed at.

Generally speaking, hurt people hurt other people in all sorts of way. Doesn't make it right to do, but it does explain much of the anger and rage we see around us today, especially in our national political life.

There are certainly some people who relish the opportunity to trash anyone they can. That is their spiritual sin and makes them nasty to be around because what they will say about one person today, they may say about you tomorrow.

However, one is free to say and think anything. It is a matter or choice and free will.

In America, unlike all of the other countries of the world, the government does NOT "give us the constitutional right to say what we want to others under the term, freedom of speech."

What you are describing is called a PRIVILEGE, which is a power granted by the government and which can be withdrawn by the government.

Under the original American Constitution (pre-14th Amendment), a RIGHT is given by GOD. And all the government can do is acknowledge and obey people's pre-existing, God-given rights, which are NOT given by the government, and can NEVER be taken away by the government.

The reason I'm pointing this out is because it is the future of humanity. It is the most spiritual expression of any law on the Earth. And if human beings follow this, there will be peace and harmony on the Earth. And if they do not, humanity will collapse into total planatwide slaver, and be utterly destroyed.

No, I'm not kidding.

But I have tears over the fact that so many people think this is a joke.

When it's nothing less than life itself.

You want to study spirituality? Study these concepts - they ARE spirituality, stripped of all the bullshit, functioning to save and preserve the lives and peace of the world. Nothing less.

Or lets put it in more stark terms: If humanity honors God-given rights, churches and ashrams and monestaries will be safe throughout the world. If it doesn't, the bloody bodies of dead monks will litter the landscape, just as they do, and for exactly the same reason, as what the Chinese have done to Tibet.
