Breaking the chains of the past - facing & healing toxic conditioning & false belief systems
Regardless of which geographical location we find ourselves on this planet, what family structures, economic circumstances, cultural or socio-political situations, religion or creed we were born into and what losses and traumas we have survived; anyone who is part of modern society has at one point or another been hurt and affected by toxic learned behaviours and false belief systems from each of these external factors.

If freedom from the traumas and global dysfunctions of our pasts and a more authentic existence is NOW what we seek. If our hopes are for changes (for the better) in the way our current world systems operate, then there comes a point, after considerable self-reflection, where realisation cuts through personal denial systems and we 'wake up' to personal responsibility and the potential for personal and collective change.

From that place of growing awareness, a desire to clear the false beliefs and cross-generational dysfunction and wounds in our own personal psyches and every day lives becomes strong enough in an individual to take action to clear and transform them. When enough individuals take personal action for positive change, then the reflection of that will manifest externally on the world stage, a bit like the 100th monkey tale.

To sum up: We are waking up (with the help of very tough internal and external circumstances) to the reality that the cross-generational dysfunctions and lies of all that has taken place before this point in time, now sits both individually and collectively on all of our shoulders. We may not have been the cause of the problems but we are responsible to heal the effects and move forward with healthier behaviours.

From this awareness, comes the realisation that we do hold the power to break the chains of the past and to prevent those dysfunctions and false belief systems continuing on in our youth and in our societies. The method to do this is to look at our pasts, the pasts of our families and cultures and see them for what they really are. To then find ways to grieve and heal the wounds we carry, to accept and to forgive and then move forward authentically. This is a very personal journey, no one can do it for anyone else - we can support each other along the way but ultimately these are steps that each on of us must make for ourselves.

This thread is dedicated to chain-breakers everywhere and it's purpose is to share experiences, tips, insights and pitfalls that we encounter as we strive to keep moving forward towards personal authenticity and a better way of being and living in these challenging times.

Re: Breaking the chains of the past - facing & healing toxic conditioning & false belief systems
Ideas and topics for future discussion

Tackling personal narcissism - inverted ('im not good enough, I don't belong, I am wrong') and extraverted ('I am the best, I have control and power over others, everyone else is wrong'). The toxic dance steps and dynamics these two polar opposites enable in the other. Recognising narcissistic behaviours in those around me and learning how not to engage.

Reflection on toxic patterns of behaviour or out-dated survival mechanisms from childhood that no longer serve me any purpose. How can I let go of these? What new tools can I replace them with?

Exploring the damage caused to the developing childhood brain and psyche when they are at the mercy of toxic individuals and systems around them. How to unfreeze, heal, break the chains for coming generations and take back our personal power. How did my childhood experiences groom me to behave in my adult relationships, what type of toxic people did I allow in under the cloak of 'normality'?

Addictive behaviours, compulsions and toxic relationships - the root traumas/cross- generational and social conditioning attached to these. Steps to freedom from addiction.

Transforming the inner critic - it is common for those who have been abused emotionally, physically, psychologically or spiritually (especially as children) to have developed a very harsh inner critic, an internalised voice of the abuser or abusers which rings out a barrage of abuse 'you are so stupid, why can't you pull yourself together, you are pathetic, this is all your fault etc etc'. Recognising this toxic self talk and then learning how to transform it into a more compassionate inner companion is key to self-progress. This inner critic is the internalisation of all the toxic conditioning we have unconsciously taken on board and just observing it in action can tell us so much about how we feel about ourselves.

The grieving process - the five stages of grief - denial, anger, guilt/blame, grief and acceptance/forgiveness.

How to recognise disordered behaviours in myself and others and stop inviting dysfunction in. Learning to set limits with myself when old patterns fo behaviour come into play and firm boundaries with toxic people in everyday life.

Reduction of projection and blame on those around me and society and an increase of positive self-change and becoming a social example/inspiration to others.

Toxic emotional triggers - what sets off my anger, ego, fear, greed, jealousy, hatred, PTSD or Complex PTSD, my disordered behaviours or periods of depression and anxiety? How do I act out and affect others during these periods? How can I protect myself from others around me projecting their 'stuff' onto me?

Pathologies, disorders and psychological injuries such as ptsd and complex ptsd - Definitions of these, how to handle disordered folk in our lives and to heal the traumatic injuries that were the cause of various anxiety related disorders.

Therapeutic tools - therapies, recovery groups, reading material, meditation, spiritual awareness, relaxation techniques, healthy living and diet.

Exploring our innate qualities of peace, happiness, compassion, humility, empathy and sense of global community.

Development of authentic spirituality as we dismantle false religious and cultural belief systems connected with shame and fear. Awareness of synchronistic situations and events as well as like minded individuals coming into our daily life experiences.

Giving back - what are ways in which we can give back what we have learned? How can we encourage others around us and offer inspiration for change in our education, health, spiritual, political and family systems? How can the internet be utilised to bring positive benefit to ourselves and others?

Re: Breaking the chains of the past - facing & healing toxic conditioning & false belief systems
I am not a professional therapist or counsellor but I have been on a dedicated path of self-recovery since I was 7 years old when I was first impacted by a huge loss in my life (I am now in my 40's).

In posts to follow, I will share an introduction of the traumas and toxicity I have faced on a personal level and some of the steps I have taken that have helped me to heal my psyche to this point in my personal journey. I will also share benefits that have manifested around me as a result of my efforts. I would also like to share useful learned skills in setting limits and boundaries I have found helpful when dealing with people in my life who are still deeply asleep and continuing their toxic dance steps.

I look forward to sharing experiences and learning alongside fellow chain breakers as we continue on our personal/collective paths towards a wholeness of being/global community.

Well thought out material you have here. Indeed, the roots of all change lie in our children, and how we rear them into young adults.

That is key.

Thank you ToadMaster.

I absolutely agree with you and believe that as the present day adults (so long as we are aware of and working on our 'stuff') it is our responsibility to show our children and our youth that we are capable of admitting where we have made mistakes and of making positive changes.

By taking on these challenges, we pass on to them truth to the best of our current understanding and abilities. We can also guide and encourage them to learn that they too hold the power and skills for positive change both in themselves and the world around them.

I think we need to examine all our beliefs. Really examine them - and then determine which ones actually serve us well.

Write them down as they occur to you. When I did that, I was like "Wow! I have actually believed and been living that one???"

Thank you for taking time to read this thread and share ayt. I have experienced this too - in fact it is more like continuing to re-experience as healing has so many levels. Ego frequently steps in, that feeling of 'oh i've done my work in this area' - from personal experience that is usually when something happens on an external level to prompt my realisation of 'shit, I had no idea how deep this belief system went - I still have a long way to go!'. After that is when humility comes in enough measure to get me to the next level of denial :)

The beliefs don't ever seem to stop in this illusion. New ones try to move in fast to replace them! haha But at least awareness that they are indeed, be(lie)fs is a great first step.

Sometimes they are even FUN to play with for a while.

Thanks for sharing Jean 2.0, it is difficult to maintain conscious awareness of 'being' and we are all constantly knocked back into physical awareness. I guess the key to this is just to keep getting back on the horse, to keep the aim of developing a greater sense of 'reality' as we continue to move forward. As for those who aren't at that stage of development yet then we can only hope that one day they will jump aboard.

Reminds me of the cheesy sounds of Chumbawuma :)

Very true - I didn't think it would be long before conscious awareness of who we really are came into view hf

That's very true. Unfortunately a lot of our unresolved issues are unconscious until we actively seek them out, taking cues from our reactions to situations, people and events which reflect our issues back to us. Life really is a mirror into ourselves. Thanks for checking out the thread Wildhoney and contributing :)

Re: Breaking the chains of the past - facing & healing toxic conditioning & false belief systems
Embracing the shadow self

What is the shadow self?

That which we would first rush to proclaim, "That's not me"!
That which threatens the ego above all else.
That which we fear or despise in others.

“What we do not face directly will return to us as fate.” ~Carl Jung

Embracing the shadow self requires forgiveness and acceptance. But before we can integrate our shadow self with compassion, we must be willing to face the reality that we have a shadow, a part of our selves that we do not wish to own, which is many times exactly what we despise the most in others. That we do face this inevitability is of utmost importance!

We all have a personal responsibility to recognize and embrace our shadow selves, to acknowledge our negative thought forms as such, before they drive us to act out of lust, greed, resentment, fear or shame.

When we can accept these feelings and own them, we are able to love the ego as an innocent child. Then, without punishment or reward- both which fuel the ego, we can be at peace with the knowledge that these thoughts are only such, and we can remember that we are still in truth, Divine love at the core.

wow!!! great thread. thank you for taking the time to so eloquently describe the real issues and how we can truely do the work and correct these long-held "misunderstandings".

once we get down to the brass tacks, then we are doing the real work that might result in social/global "new understandings" that come from a clear and conscious place.

thank you and i look forward to participating in your thread. funstar67

The more you look for the more you'll find. Let it go completely. Stop analyzing, stop magnifying, let it all go.
You're so caught up in your neuorsis it will take a life time to clear. Do it once, do it now completely. Stop thinking and you will know all.
