Mitt Romney: Would a Mormon President help save the U.S. Constitution?

Hi everyone. Admittedely, I am a Mormon myself. My support for Mitt Romney has nothing to do with his faith, it has everything to do with the fact that of all the candidates (including the incumbent), I feel he is the best choice that's out there. That's not to say there's not a better option, but I've coalesced around this man as my candidate of choice.

A lot has been said about Mitt Romney's faith, considering that he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, referred to commonly as the "Mormon Church". Many Americans have attitudes and viewpoints towards the "Mormons" based on their different belief system, although in the strict sense their beleif in Christ as the Saviour and Redeemer qualifies the group as Christian.

What is not commonly known about the Mormon faith is that members of the Church, their leadership, and the Church's founders, specifically Joseph Smith, have had a great deal to say about the United States Constitution and its' place in God's plan, as they see it.

Mormons believe that the Constitution was divinely inspired, and that the men who framed the founding document of this nation were raised up by God to accomplish that feat. It is notable that many of the nation's founders were in fact very flawed men; not unlike the followers of Christ in the early days of his ministry. The original Apostles were very flawed men, yet God found a way to use them and their talents to further his plan for the salvation of mankind through Christ's atonement.

Joseph Smith and Brigham Young stated that the U.S. Constitution had God's "stamp of approval" and that the document was in fact based on eternal principles of right, wrong, and personal accountability. The basic principle that men ought to be free to pursue their goals without interference from government or other individuals goes hand in hand with the struggle for man's soul since the first man, Adam. Ever since the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, it was God's plan that mankind follow his commandments and teachings, but that mankind should not be FORCED to do so. Free agency is the most important principle of God's plan; we can choose to do good, or choose to to evil.

The U.S. Constitution is a flawed document, because it was written by flawed men. Yet, despite its' flaws it is the most perfect outline for any government of men, in the history of the world. It specifically outlines the basic freedoms of men, and gives credit to God for these freedoms, and that they are "self evident". It also specifically outlines the LIMITS on government; so that government, made up of flawed men, can not impose its' will on its' people, lest the people rise up against the government.

It is for this reason we have the Second Ammendment; so that the people of this nation would have the means by which to overthrow their own government, should the yoke of tyrrany overtake it. This is not a matter of opinion; this is specifically outlined in the writings of Jefferson, Adams, Madison, and others in the Federalist Papers as the SPECIFIC REASON for the Second Ammendment. Jefferson went so far as to state that when government over-reaches and becomes tyrranical, that the people should "throw off such government, and appoint new guardians for their future security".

How does this tie into a potential Mitt Romney presidency?

The Mormon faith holds leadership in high esteem, whether it's in the church itself, or in governmental roles. From everything I've read it seems that Mitt Romney did a great deal to live up to his responsibilities as a Bishop (similar to a Pastor or Minister) and then later as a Stake President (a regional director/overseer of the branches - small congregations, wards - larger congregations and stakes - the regional area that encompasses the branches and wards of a region.

Leadership roles within the Mormon church involve what is called "magnifying their calling". What this means is to take your responsibilities in your role as a leader and determine how best to accomplish your tasks. This can be done by a careful determination of the facts and situation, and also by prayer and submission of the spirit to recieve guidance.

Because of the teachings of the Mormon church, that the U.S. Constitution (the ORIGINAL version, not today's corporate bastardization) is in fact divenely inspired and approved by God; and because of the requirement by our faith that members of the Mormon church magnify their callings to the best of their natural abilities; is it possible that President Mitt Romney would pay special heed to his sacred oath, to "defend the Constitution against ALL enemies, foreign and domestic"?

I'm not trying to covert anyone here, I'm just thinking out loud and trying to educate others to something they may not be aware of.

One of the "prophecies" of the Mormon church states that the "Constitution would hang by a thread; and members of the Priesthood (the authority of God on earth as given to members of the Church)...ALONG WITH OTHERS WHO ARE NOT MORMONS...would bear the Constitution away from destruction."

If Romney were to choose Ron Paul as his runnign mate, or make him an advisor or cabinet secretary of some kind, then this would certainly get my attention.
