My parents drive a Mercedes, so every time I see one coming up the street, I look to see who's driving. Most of the time, it's a young Asian or sometimes a black. It's also occasionally a teen-ager (driving daddy's car, I assume). There are far more young non-white people driving that brand now than older white people, like my parents. The freedom fighter that I know is quite well off. He flies out to Nebraska from southern Florida every year to hunt geese. He brings traditional Cuban food for everyone he sees while he is there. For a man that has to be well into his seventies, he gets around great. He rents a car and drives around Nebraska and Wyoming. Everybody gets to try his Cuban cooking. He tells everyone about his experience in the revolution. It makes for a great evening of eating, drinking and talking about the history he lived through. He is certainly not a pig, or stupid, and he has a collection of classic cars in a warehouse in Florida. I don't know if his collection includes any Mercedes, but he sure as hell knew what my wife's 450SL was, and what it was worth. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. It is all over the Cuban-American community in Miami; and whats more, Felix Rodriguez, who captured Che in Bolivia, who also fought with me in the Bay of Pigs invasion against Castro, and is the current President of the Brigade 2506 association ( all members, including me, are Cuban-American veterans of the Bay of Pigs Invasion against Fidel Castro in April 17, 1961) wrote back to Daimler, Mercedes-Benz raising hell. The man I know was one of the lucky ones that escaped Cuba in '59. He is still one of the most wanted men in Cuba. Castro will never forget, and never forgive. These guys lost a lot of friends and family. This is not propaganda, it is true history. There are a lot of books available on the subject, some of them are true, but some are written with an agenda. After all that America did to these people, they still love us and are glad to call America home. They are more patriotic Americans than most of the people born here. He came to America, became an Attorney, and has been the lead attorney representing Cubans in exile for many years. Obviously he would like to go home, but he has adjusted to America very well.
