When I lived near Cle Elum Washington, in the Cascade mountains, I was hiking and found what I assume were "bigfoot" tracks around and underneath a wild apple tree in the woods. I was with a friend. We hiked back to the little town to report what we'd found and to get people to come verify...and everyone in we encountered said it was no big deal...everyone had seen signs of "bigfoot" regularly. Weird.

This is the mysterious element. The place from which the movie ideas about strange little towns harboring interesting secrets come from. Like they are know about some kind of supernatural element, then the outsider comes in, and they either pretend to not know, or try to keep it a secret, etc.

Porn man. When I was in 5th grade, me and two of my classmates went hiking in this hill behind his house and we found an old wooden shack. Inside was a bunch of old porn magazines.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1243759

I found the same thing when I was about 16. It was an old sack with what must had been over a 100 smut magazines in it. there was also a bag with unopened bear bottles in it.

I suspect now that there are demons who this to lead people away from God and get them trapped into a life of pornography. I mean, think about it, who carries porn and bear into the woods and just leaves it there knowing that kids could find it? If someone is an addict and they repent and want to get rid of their sinful stash, wouldn't they make sure that it was burned or at least put out with the garbage... not taken into the woods for others to find.

I suspect you are correct. I found some porn when i was young and have been wanking ever since. I'm sure there are many here on GLP who share this burden.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I remember when I was 17 driving to all kids of remote places to get out of town and get laid with a degree of privacy. My parents were not happy about us spending time in my room and vice versa at her house so all the action was outdoors or in the car.

After many nights of great sex and no interruptions I'll never forget what happened in Grizedale Forest. We drove up a track some distance and then took a right into a clearing. We were about 30 miles from home and 3 to 4 miles from a tarmac road.

It was a totally clear and the stars were easily visible with about a 3/4 moon and It was a dry, mild, October evening and after a bit of foreplay and kissing we got in the back and started to get it on. The keys were in the ignition but the radio was off.

All was going well and Kate had straddled me and was riding me to orgasm and at the moment we were both on the edge, a palm slapped against the window and the face of a man pushed up against it looking inside. We were both mid orgasm and she screamed and all the hairs on the back of my neck stood upright. I kind of bucked her off in a very undignified manner and pulled up my pants srambling into the front seat and hitting the lights onto full beam and got out of the car against Kate's wishes. As she scrambled into the passenger seat and I stood to the right of the front bumper the "man" in question ran across the beam of the lights like a fucking gazelle, then again slightly further away. I jumped back in the car and started the engine which unlike the films stArted first time. As I swung the car around and the beam spanned the clearing they passed across the guy just stood there, looking, about 250 yards away.

When we got back on the main road I was still shaking. Being frozen, trapped, mid orgasm , car doors unlocked, keys in the ignition is one of the scariest feelings I've ever had. By the next week were laughing about it but it was a nervous laugh. For anyone in the UK, the guy looked like worzel gummidge with deranged eyes. I wonder if we were the only victims he scared the shit out of under similar circumstances.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I was through hiking the Appalachian Trail last year, when I got lost and found myself off the trail, in a strange, dark hollow with heavy moss and one running stream. It was getting dark, and starting to rain. I found a cave just above the creekbed, and there were no bear-tracks, so I went in for shelter.

Sometime in the night, a bear DID come, right into the cave, and I had no way out! Keeping my head, I crawled deeper into the cave and found a passage too small for the bear to fit. It led to a long crawlway ending in a little alcove.

I had no light, and was terrified. But the sound of the bear in the bigger room faded away. This new room was cozy, with what felt like mounds of soft moss and crackly leaves all over the floor. A breeze blew through, and the leaves, though I couldn’t see them, seemed to move all over, they tickled me all night long, making it hard to sleep.

The next morning I crept back out to see if the bear was gone – he was. So I exited back into the hollow. I had a terrible rash all over my body from the itchy bedding I had slept on, and couldn’t stop scratching as I gathered my stuff and went down the creek looking for a road and some directions back to the trail.

I found another trail along the creek, and in a few hours, it ended at a dirt road. There I rested, trying to decide which way to walk for help. My skin was bleeding in spots now, and pustules were forming at the itchiest places. I thought I might need some cream or something.

A Game Warden jeep came around the bend, and when the Warden saw me sitting at the trailhead, he stopped.

“You planning on going up there?” he asked, gesturing up the trail I had come down.

“No, actually-” I began, but the itching on my skin made me stop short to scratch.

“Well, if you are, just stay the hell clear of Spider-Nest Cave.”

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
My 3rd weird forest story:

I was in high school with 2 other friends. We drove to the mall at about midnight because we heard the rumor that the Luby's restaurant in the mall stayed open later than the rest of the mall, and we had the plan to somehow sneak into the mall and run around at night.

Well we got to the mall and Luby's was already closed, so we started driving back home. On the way back there was a stretch of the highway that was slightly elevated with a lot of forest on either side. Driving past this part we all noticed a bright orange glow reflecting off these low hanging clouds to our left. This glow was coming from inside the forest.

We all thought it was a forest fire and we were looking for an adventure that night, so we decided to drive into the nearest neighborhood and see if we could somehow get closer to this fire.

Driving around in the neighborhood, we could not find a road that headed in that direction of the woods. So eventually we ended up parking our car and just walking into the woods. We had no flashlights or anything, but the orange glow off the clouds was illuminating the surrounding area somewhat. We basically just walked blindly in the direction of the source of the glow. At this point it was probably about thirty minutes after midnight.

After walking through the woods for awhile, we came across a makeshift road in the forest. It was composed of planks of wood lying one after the other. This road appeared to lead directly to the source of this glow. So we walked along the side of this road, in the direction of the glow.

Ahead of us the road curved and ended at this glow, it was enormously bright and there was a strange metallic grinding or roaring noise. We started to get nervous so we took cover in the woods and approached the destination through the woods, so that if anyone was there they wouldn't immediately see us. We came up to a clearing, my friends crouched down and I climbed a tree so I had the best vantage point.

What we were looking at was basically a clearing, at least a football field in diameter, with a gigantic crater in the center. It looked like a classic moon crater, raised on the edges. There was a HUGE flame coming out of this crater, this flame must have been over a hundred feet across and the flames were as high or higher than the surrounding trees. Standing around this crater were approximately 15-20 men in yellow hazmat suits. In the center of this flame I could barely make out a rectangular black object maybe about the size of a refrigerator. In the background of the clearing, behind this flame, were several large trailer houses.

Occasionally a load metallic grinding or roaring would be heard from the crater, and the flames would leap even higher into the air. I climbed down the tree so I could tell my friends what I had seen. We contemplated just walking out there and asking these men what was going on, but we were young and scared that maybe these people would kill us because we saw something we weren't supposed to see.

Eventually we left, and we spent the whole night theorizing about what was going on in that strange scene in the middle of the night in the woods. If it was just regular people doing some ordinary legitimate work, why do it at 1 in the morning?

Several days later I was telling a friend this story, and he didn't believe me. It was during the daytime and we decided to go back to the scene. We basically retraced my steps exactly, parked in the same place and walked through the woods. We found the road and followed it to the clearing. When we got there we discovered that everything, including the crater, was completely gone. It was simply an empty clearing now. We looked around for clues and found nothing.

I posted this story on a paranormal forum many years ago, asking if anyone knew what these guys were doing. No one could give me an answer, apparently it's very odd that these guys were doing whatever they were doing in the dead of night.

Any ideas on why a bright colored pipe would be protruding 6 inches above the ground so many miles into the woods and mountains?
 Quoting: BuzzKill

i find these a lot in remote patches of farmland; there, they're used for pumping up groundwater in times of drought. they usually have a cap screwed on, except in times they're being used. don't know how deep they go, never could see the bottom. was wide enough to get a shoe and a leg in.

one more:
sometime mid or end of the '80's, my family took the cat on our travels (motorhome, cats love to travel like that, once they are used to it). it was somewhere in France. i was walking the cat in remote valley (on a leash - don't laugh; that cat went after foxes and did plenty of other stupid shit), we came upon the remnants of an old barn and ofcourse the cat had to go in and explore; so we did. once in, it was pitch dark and the cat just frooze in terror, wouldn't move. i shone a flashlight around and the entire ceiling was covered with sleeping bats...
i once had the same thing in the alps: was following a trail which went through a small bended tunnel (bored in rock, to get to the other flank). i was stepping in something mushy all the time, didn't care, until i needed a flashlight: the low ceiling was entirely coverd in bats, they almost touched my head... and then they all went batcrazy because i disturbed them.

good times.

good thread too.

But instead relocating them, the aforementioned man in a fit of *screw you guys!* released them all... I do know that for years there were tons of sightings of a chicken-killing black panther.

But to my knowledge, we're the only ones that ever saw a Hyena in the East Texas woods.
 Quoting: ScrumpTheTexan

Whoa I have a related story! I live in East TX and when I was younger I was working at a La Madeleine restaurant. There was a lady working there with me who was like 65 years old. I thought it was weird that she was working there and she was so old, and one day she explained to me that her and her husband had lost all their savings on buying an emu farm. They owned tons of emus and kept them in a giant fence that was like 8 feet tall, apparently they can jump really high if they get excited.

Once she told me a story of her 2 dogs, she said that one was young and barked at everything, and one was old and only barked if there was real danger, so they only bothered to listen to the old dog. Well one evening the old dog started barking and getting really excited, so she grabbed her shotgun and went outside. There she was totally shocked to see that a black panther was in her yard, and it was carrying one of her emus OVER this 8-foot tall fence!

She said that for some reason she was so scared that she was unable to shoot it.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I was working near the White Mountain Apache Indian Res about 10 years ago. I'd worked hard all week and thought I would just take a night off and chill out.

I drove for miles down a dirt road and far away from the nearest city. At About 10 at night I pulled to the edge of a rut in the road just to kick back. I climbed out of the cab of my truck, lit a smoke and started walking around. I could hear birds and little animals scurrying about. The desert seemed to come alive that night.

I ended up laying on the hood of my truck sucking down a beer and taking in the beautiful stars. Coming from Southern California, I was amazed at the massive and wonderful Milky Way Galaxy. It was great to behold.

I was nearing the end of my first beer and wanting to roll off the cab and grab another one so I propped myself up on one elbow. Then I heard them. The sound of unshod ponies striking rocks as they walked.

At this point I stood up on the hood to see where the noise was coming from. I still couldn't see anything but knew they were coming from my right. I could feel my heart beat rapidly when the first one broke bush.

He was the most proud person I ever saw. His entire body and horse all had a weird glow about them. He wore a full head dress with feathers that touched the horses rump. The ends of the feathers were lit with a reddish glow.

Being scared to death, I didn't know what to do. I froze. I waited as he rode near the front of my truck. Once there, he stopped and stared directly in my eyes. He had deep lines that crisscrossed his face. I could tell that this man was important and held power. He was extremely strong looking, well built for his age and his face shown the worry of many years trying to keep his people alive.

With a slight kick to his horses flank, he pushed on. Six other warriors followed him. Each dressed differently but all glowing as the first. None of them looked at me. They just rode by.

When I could no longer see them or hear them I jumped off the truck and grabbed a .45 and a flashlight. I was still pretty shook up. I flashed the light across the path they'd taken but could find no tracks. Yet I know I heard the hooves striking stones and the horses breaking against the bush.

I ran to the clearing to see if the edges might have broken or twisted branches. Everything looked normal as far as I could tell. Then I heard the sounds.

It was as if they were coming back but now there were dozens of them. My legs became feeble as I chamber a round in the .45. Soon I could not only hear them 50 yards abreast of me but I began to see their faint glows.

I have to admit, I lost it at this point. I ran back to my truck to get away but realized the doors were locked and keys inside. I must have bumped the auto lock when I grabbed my gun and flashlight! I thought about shooting out the window or breaking it with a rock but that might incite them in some way. I was scared.

With my brain in panic mode I ran off the road, deeper and deeper into the brush. I ran until I could run no more than I walked and ran some more. Finally, not seeing or hearing them anymore, I stopped and looked for shelter.

It was cold that night and I had little in the way of supplies with me. All I could think of doing was staying hidden and keeping warm. I didn't dare use my flashlight for fear of being seen. So I reached down and scooped pine needles all around my body.

I must have fell asleep during the night because when I awoke the sky was black with dark clouds and it began to rain heavily. Once again, I felt my life was in danger and knew I had to do something. I used the flashlight to find better cover but even under big trees, little streams of water would fall. After about 10 minutes I found a very small cave. Not a big one like you see on tv. I ran up there to check it out and found it to be suitable enough to completely shield my body with extra room to spare.

By this time, I was soaked! Everything I wore including my underware was wet. I decided to make a fire at the mouth of the cave for warmth and to dry my clothes. So, I gathered fallen wood from under the trees and pine needles. I tried to light the pine needles but they wouldn't catch. Finally, I pulled off one of my socks, found a dry patch near the top and used it to start a fire with my lighter. The fire felt good but smoke filled my small cave. I ended up grabbing a small log and used it to push the fire away from the entrance. It worked and now the cave was clearing but the fire was going out because of the rain. Naked, I left the cave site to look for long branches. I found a handful of large ones and placed them tepee style around the fire. Now, as the rain hit these green sticks, the water clung to the sticks and was displaced around the fire. I dug a small ditch around my tepee waterbreak and watched as the water pooled around it and spilled over in safe direction.

I was very scared that night and couldn't sleep for many hours. When I awoke, I was freezing. My fire was completely out but my clothing was nearly dry. My plan that day was to retraced my footprints, get back to my truck, break the damn window, get the hell out of there and never come back.

I didn't take long for me to realize the rain had washed away my tracks. I had run for hours the previous night and had no clue as to where I was. I could see no landmarks in any direction. I walked around for a while looking for the biggest nearby hill. Once on top, perhaps I could spot something and find a way out.

As I neared the crest of the hill, my heart sank. I couldn't see anything I recognized from my vantage point. As I sat down, trying to collect my self, I saw strange indian symbols hanging in the tree near me or stuck in the ground. There were no footprints in this area as well but I knew it had been done recently. Sticks were used to make the symbols and they were twisted and broken. The wood inside was completely green. I know I had walked into some sort of religious site and I'd better get the hell out.

I backtracked to the best of my knowledge the way I'd come the night before. I fell twice and hurt my right leg in the process. I had to stop for a break. I sat there thinking how crazy the night had been. and tried to rationalize the experience. Finally I just got up and kept walking in a westernly direction. I came to a small pool of water in some rocks and wanted a drink but the water looked filthy and animal and bird dropping were all around the water. I just lay my head on the rock and almost cried. Alright, I cried a little.

After a time, I got up and pushed onward. I saw a fairly large clearing ahead and made haste. When I reached the clearing I froze in my tracks. A wooden indian spear with the blunt end pushed in the ground stood before me. A single white feather with a painted red tip hung loosly near the top. A large rabbit was impaled on the tip. Its guts on the ground and its blood still slowly dripping like small rivers down the length of the spear.

I'll have to finish my story tomorrow. It's getting way late and I have to work tomorrow.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I was walking around some farmland in San Marcos Texas out in the middle of noplace and came upon a few tin shed structures. They were not very big, maybe 10' x 8'.

I started looking inside them and there were a bunch of old bottles and various things from like the 1950s/60s era.

I opened up one shed and it was empty but here is where it gets weird.

When I opened the shed and stuck my head inside I thought I heard rain hitting the tin shed. I closed the door, looked up, overcast day but not a drop of rain in sight.

I opened the door again, stuck my head in, and heard the rain again. I was like WTF is going on.

I walked inside of the shed and that's when the light hit them at the right angle for me to see what was making that noise.

The entire inside walls and ceiling of the shed were covered 3 inches deep in daddy long leggers. They all seemed to be interlocked with their legs. There must have been 50,000 of them. They were all tapping their right longest front leg on the tin of the shed in unison. It was one of the weirdest things I ever saw. They also seemed to put off a weird smell in large numbers like that.

I always wondered about this. Has anyone else ever seen such a thing?

He was a short, stocky man, I'd say in his 70's. Short, white hair under his hat. Probably 5'6" tall, kind of hunched over. He looked like his body was broken down from a life lived hard or manual labor, maybe even both. He kind of looked used up. He was very tan, with leathery skin and his face was wrinkled and very weather-beaten with white whiskers.

His movements were very slow and he looked to be in some pain. As far as his appearance, he looked as real as any other person.

Oddly enough, as the years passed, I had completely forgotten about this incident. It wasn't until many years later after I'd moved away from that area that I was sitting in a bar when who do you think walked right in? It was one of my buddies that was with me that day and out of the clear blue he asked me if I remembered that day when we saw the old man in the woods. I said I did, but I had completely forgot about it until that moment. I asked him what he remembered about it and he virtually told me exactly the same thing that I had remembered about it.

Strange, that's the only time we've ever talked about it after all these years.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
When I was about 8 or 9 I found a 12-13 foot long black snake in the woods about a block away from our house; I hit it over the head with a stick til it stopped moveing and ran to get my dad[by this age I had killed several of the little rattlers we have here in western lower Michigan but had never ever seen a snake this big!] When I got back with my dad nothing was there and nobody believed I had seen a snake that big.

Fourty years later I told the story to an old neighbor and she told me that her dad[a policeman] had later killed a 13 1/2 and a 12 foot snake in those woods. Another neighbor there in the 1950s had been a exotic snake dancer and must have released those boas......... a fourty year mystery solved

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I go hike around the lake at the conservation area. Not very remote or wild whatsoever. It's a few kms from my place, and about 35k round trip hike.

When you get to the far side where the river meets the flooded area of the resovior created by the dam at the other end, theres road access, so anybody can just drive out there and walk in a short ways to the north end of the lake.

I came around from the north side then along the road going south, then west, into the woods along the river again, heading back.

I noticed a side trail that looked beaten down, so I decided to go check it out. I walked in about 200 yards.
As the trees cleared near the rivers edge, I saw a woman standing there. She had her back turned to me. She was facing the Lake and the Sun.

I started making coughing noises and clearing my throat, so I wouldn't get too close and startle her. She seemed not to notice, so i made louder noises as i neared.

I couldn't see what she was doing because her back was turned to me. Her arms and hands we're up in front of her. She suddenly heard me and turned around.

I stood a good amount of paces off, and explained that I was just scopeing out the side path. I could now clearly see that her shirt was open, and she had been standing there
in the forest, facing the lake and the sunshine, Massaging
her boobs.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I've never seen anything strange when I was out roughing it in the woods. However, I live in the woods as our town is plopped down in the middle of them. In my neighborhood, we have 2-3 acre lots. Behind us is another neighborhood with a large fifty-foot wide and twenty plus foot deep ravine separating the neighborhoods (old moonshiner's hideout). So, I'm out walking the dog and here comes this car out of the one neighborhood and into ours. I'm thinking maybe they are looking at Christmas lights. They drive down our street and turn around in the culdesac and turn as though heading back out of the neighborhood but stop. The guy gets out and says, "Gavin, come here son." And there is this little bitty two-year-old wandering in the neighbor's yard. How the heck did this baby wander out of his neighborhood, through the woods and ravine, to get to our neighborhood? At night, too!

I live in the woods and walk them often with my dogs and photograph them. You know that weird feeling you get when you feel like someone's behind you? At those times I turn around quick and take a pic. When I download my pics, several times there has been a very pronounced and bright orb behind me.

I mean, think about it, who carries porn and bear into the woods and just leaves it there knowing that kids could find it?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1445810

Lots & lots of people, evidently. I've found them more than once in different parts of the State when I was kid.

There used to be a huge thread here about this.

Huge turd in the middle of the path, filled with FUR .
Southern appalachia, no predators that large here. Bigger than human or huge dog turd.

Rumors of mountain lions, denied by the authorities.
Can't imagine what it could have been otherwise.

HUGE TURD, formed, human shape, filled with fur.
500 feet from the house, deep woods, does bigfoot eat furry critters?

Heeby Jeebies.

WAY TO GO !

clappa
Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
A friend and i found snow in the woods, on the east side of a steep ridge, in the springtime, in a part of California where it doesn't snow.

It was real snow. It was awesome. Played in it. Had a snowball fight. Didn't really connect that it wasn't supposed to be there til days later.

We simply gave up trying to share that story.

Another thing i'm sure all can relate to are the numerous, random, how-the-hell-did-that-get-here, wth-abandoned cars.

Go in any direction in the woods long enough and you're sure to find one. like it was choppered in.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6930006

the car i saw either was helicoptered in or a large group of strong people picked the car up, carried it over a small creek, over some dead redwoods and into an area in the middle of trees.
if i wasn't alone out there for the first time i may have had the courage to get closer to the car. but even then there was a lot of tree debris to crawl over to get to it.

i almost went back to explore it last month but the campgrounds (and the maps) were closed for the season.

don't know what to say about your snow story. maybe a movie was filmed there that needed snow so they made it? either that or a freak snowfall in that part of cali?

 Quoting: BD 1391571

We used to live 60 miles northwest of Houston up to about a year ago. More north than west. Considered East TX but not deep East. We lived a pretty good ways in the woods and the people whom had lived there for many years always swore there were black panthers around and had many different stories how they got there. We never really believed them till my wife was coming home about 2 AM one night.

She was driving down the dirt road to our house about 20 mph when she said it looked like a huge black dog slowly walking across the road in front of her. But as she got closer, she said its' shoulders were doing that rolling motion just like a huge cat! It never picked up speed and just casually kept going. She worked at the State Park for a while after the sighting and asked the manager about it. He said that Texas State Parks released black panthers I think in the 70's sometime to try and control the feral hog population.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
It was when I was in High School that my friend got an off road Jeep. There were four of us. Back in the day you could access the Longhorn Quarry in Northeast San Antonio. There were woods around the back and I was surprised to learn that in these woods were abandoned homes that housed the workers from the factory. They were scattered throughout the woods, but they were few.

As we drove the these backway trails after midnight we saw a house that was really off to itself. In the doorway was a tall, shadowy figure just staring at us. Needless to say if that were a bum he had balls to be staying there; but we all got this eerie feeling and kept driving.

Since then we encountered strange things through San Antonio. A two story one room home in the middle of a huge field. The doors were nailed shut, but in the second story window you could see a faint lamp like light.
Back when Midget Mansion was still around (Old San Antonio urban legend); there was a pool in the back that was elevated. It had a huge room underneath it that was open. As we were to enter it in complete darkness we heard a bunch of scuffling and movement. I said let's get the hell outta here!

There were other strange, unexplainable events in my life later. But none like the most recent of which was three years ago. In my back yard playing with my soon we heard a faint helicopter sound. I looked up and saw what was a white orb "drone" with no visible rotor on top. The strange thing was the was this orange radar looking thing that was gyroscopically circling the middle of the orb. I got the strangest feeling.
I ran inside to grab my camera but when I turned on the camera to take a shot my camera turned off twice. It was now gone. The only confirmation I had that this prob. wasn't a hallucination was that my three old said helicopter and pointed to it as well.

I'm sorry to digress off the woods subject-but I felt that I started seeing these odd things after the event in the woods with forgotten homes!
