Violent protest vs. non-violent protest

Is it really true that non-violent protest is really more effective than violent protests, such as revolutions, civil wars and coup d'états ?

Historically, revolutions have always been more effective than mere protest movements.

Look for example in Libya. They had violent protests and they brought Kadafi down. This is an example that violent protests are sometimes more effective.
