I gave you 5*'s and a Suggest Pin by the way.

I think the idea is a great one, and one that applies in any large, democratic, service driven industry.

Thank you. I did not really intend my post to be viewed in a xenophobic way; maybe I should redo the title to reflect that. I think that all of us, no matter what country we live in, would be better served to focus our gift giving on local services, which would lessen our consumption of resources and would encourage a healthy economy in a sustainable way.

Yes don't forget about local shops and etsy! I make things and sell them and the small profit I make helps us immensely

All very good ideas OP.It seems like all the sites are fighting for customers this year in a big way.All the black Friday sales have already started for most.
I hope many will buy local but I think there are going to be a lot that just dont buy at all this year simply because they have nothing to buy with.

Re: How to support local economies this holiday season...not China
OP, our family has been drawing names for several years, and trying to buy local. It helps that Eugene, OR has a wonderful indoor local market! Most of our family is there, so they can utilize that well.

For the rest of us, my husband has gotten into woodworking, and just bought the makings for breakfast boards (a European idea that has a hole for a soft boiled egg and room for toast next to it). My kids have had them at our house for years... this year they get their own.

I'm crocheting up a storm. I make crocheted caps all year long for the Salvation Army (it's not too hot even in the summer for a small crochet project), and in the fall and winter I work on bigger projects like afghans.

I've been pushing for hand-made gifts at work for the past three years, and sometimes we get a good response, and other times everyone just shrugs and buys something for the gift grab.

Let's not give up just because people look blankly at us. I'd rather someone just wish me a truly Merry Christmas, than have them buy some crap just to have something in their hands.

I agree with you. Buy local, keep the profit local. Keep the money out of the corporations hands. They don't give a poop about anything but the bottom line...profits by any means is their way.

the best way to celebrate the season regardless is to make your own gifts.

been doing this for a dozen years.

it should be no surprise people have more of an appreciation for this than simply buying shit...

I am a knitter and bead jewelry maker and I also enjoy making gifts for people. I have to match the right project with the right person, but when I get it right, it is so gratifying.

That being said, I never thought of giving an oil change or a haircut as a gift, but what a great idea this is. Win-win.
 Quoting: oh_yikes

Been doing handmade Christmas for years. Usually it was tins of homemade candies, which is a tradition Mom started when my brother and I were little. Folks usually give the tins back sometime in January hoping to have them refilled for the next year. :)

Last year I learned to French knit and Crochet. Between hat and scarf sets, afghans, a felt teddy bear, and several hairbows, broaches, and ornaments, and boxes of cookies, last year was completely handmade aside from the crafting supplies we got our girls.

I think we're doing treat boxes again this year. Maybe a couple amigurumi toys for the girls along with some new Sunday bows if I can get the chance to stitch them up while they're napping.

Buying local and/or from the actual crafts person (such as handmade goods at etsy.com) is a great idea.

Personally I will be giving all handmade gifts this year.

I was wondering if anyone would mention Etsy.

Lots of sellers are gearing up for holiday sales and specials right now, myself included. The team forums are loaded with conversations between the veterans and first year sellers.

Handmade gifts are a regular thing for me, I have a candle shop & I like to bake so I tend gift those two often during the Holiday season.

American made. :)
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

Re: How to support local economies this holiday season...not China
It's not really local economies vs China as much as it's local economies vs Corp America.

And if it's a choice between keeping our economy afloat vs supporting China's.. let it burn.. it's about time we did something different, regardless of what that something is.

If you continue along the mindset of our economy vs China's, this is the same line of thinking that keeps people buying stocks when the fake stock market goes down.. beating the dead horse over and over and over again. Maybe if we stop supporting people that sell crap that's a start, regardless of where it comes from. Local doesn't necessarily equal quality every time.

That's a good thing. And Americans should support each other, too, which is why they should purchase local or American-made.

It's really simple, don't buy any shit except for locally grown organic food....I'm sure you can find locally made soap or toothpaste, locally made clothes are possible to find too but more expensive....but the quality is better so the clothes will last longer, I have kids and I won't be buying any plastic toys as all are made in third world countries by kids...oh the irony of that..

Every year my sister makes my kids toys and every year they are amazingly awesome. Last year was felt food that had magnets in them so she could pretend cut the potatoes, carrots etc and an apron, year before was fabric ABCs and they still play with them! Among countless other awesome stuff she's made them.

Would be great if we had more and more small business that would sell only locally made items.

At this point in our history when people are starting to see that there are no jobs and our economy is broke. How can we keep sending our dollars to foreign nations?
