Top US foreclosure law firm threw Halloween party, mocked the homeless
[link to www.nytimes.com]

From the article: "On Friday, the law firm of Steven J. Baum threw a Halloween party. The firm, which is located near Buffalo, is what is commonly referred to as a “foreclosure mill” firm, meaning it represents banks and mortgage servicers as they attempt to foreclose on homeowners and evict them from their homes. Steven J. Baum is, in fact, the largest such firm in New York; it represents virtually all the giant mortgage lenders, including Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

The party is the firm’s big annual bash. Employees wear Halloween costumes to the office, where they party until around noon, and then return to work, still in costume. I can’t tell you how people dressed for this year’s party, but I can tell you about last year’s.

That’s because a former employee of Steven J. Baum recently sent me snapshots of last year’s party. In an e-mail, she said that she wanted me to see them because they showed an appalling lack of compassion toward the homeowners — invariably poor and down on their luck — that the Baum firm had brought foreclosure proceedings against. "

Seeing the pictures of employees mocking those that have lost their homes just made my blood boil.

These people have lost their humanity. It might be one thing to do a job that needs to be done, even if it is unpleasant, but to mock and laugh at people struggling in this tough economy to hang onto their homes is quite another.

I was really disturbed to see the heartlessness and lack of compassion these people displayed. Any of us could end up in this circumstance, if we suffered some bad luck in our life. Making fun of their suffering is unspeakably cruel. I hope they get their comeuppance.

My first reaction to 'bad stuff' is humor.

So my first thought was 'That's nice, at least someone really enjoys their job'.

Its a sarcastic thought. I know, shame on me.

But thinking a little more on it I have to wonder what kind of mind set actually makes fun of people in serious trouble, such as the homeless?

Are they really just this callous? Or do they actually feed of the misery of others and thus making fun of that misery just feeds them more?

And then I think a little bit more and my curiosity turns into a physical stomach turning as I wonder, is this how the whole industry actually things?

Is the whole industry really filled with such people who can readily mock the homelessness that they have caused?

Isn't this sort of like a rapist laughing as he looks down at the body he has just violated?

I think I really want to puke.

What a great analogy. That is why I was so disgusted when I read this.

Re: Top US foreclosure law firm threw Halloween party, mocked the homeless
In the last debate, Mitt Romney said there should be no attempt to help people hang onto their homes. Instead, the process should be allowed to hit bottom, so the properties are nice and cheap and can be snapped up by investors, who can then rent them back out to the people who used to own them.

The people at Baum are the very picture of the loss of humanity that is currently being espoused by the GOP. They jeer people who cannot afford health care and mock people who are losing their homes. Who would vote for such people???
