Serbia awards Iranian photographers

TEHRAN – Two Iranian photographers were awarded medals and a third received an honorable mention during the closing ceremony of the 2nd edition of the Man and Work photo exhibition in Bor, Serbia.

The photo “My Share of Life”, taken by renowned photographer Reza Vahmi, won the Gold Salon medal in the Theme B section of the festival.

The Gold Salon Medal in the Theme C section went to Mohammadreza Momeni for his photo “The Future is Mine”. Another Iranian photographer, Seyyed Esmaeil Musavi, received honorable mention for his photo “Discontent” in this section.

“Man and Work”(color or monochrome),“Color”– Free,“Black and White”– Free, and “Photo Journalism”(color or monochrome) were the four themes of the festival.

Organized by the Photo Club of Bor and Cultural Center of Bor, the exhibit received a total of 8106 photos submitted by 607 photographers from 62 countries.

Civilian populations are increasingly being targeted during recent civil wars. However, atrocities must match certain specific criteria before they are considered genocide. The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defines genocide as:

"... certain acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as such. The proscribed acts include killings, causing serious bodily or mental harm, imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group, forcibly transferring its children to another group, or deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its destruction in whole or in part." 4

Ethnic cleansing in Bosnia during the mid 1990s started as mass expulsions of civilians. It escalated to include internment in concentration camps, mass executions, rapes, etc. There was a clear policy by the Serbs "to exterminate Muslim Bosnians as a group..." 4 Their actions were generally considered to be genocide. There is a general consensus that widespread atrocities were also committed by the Muslims and the Croats (largely Roman Catholic). But the level of their war crimes did not reach genocidal proportions.

There have been allegations that the Serbs were also engaged in genocide in Kosovo before and during the NATO bombing. Media correspondents and human rights investigators conducted large-scale interviews of Kosovar refugees. The data collected show that the Geneva Conventions concerning civilians had been ignored and that extremely serious war crimes were perpetrated by the Yugoslavian army, police and militias. There appeared to be a consensus of human rights investigators that the quantity and type of documented atrocities proved that genocide had been committed by the Yugoslavian government against the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. This belief was confirmed as the NATO forces occupied Kosovo. Mass graves were located and were systematically examined by forensic specialists. Ethnic Albainians came out of hiding with horrendous stories to tell. In excess of 11,000 murders were reported to authorities. According to a report by the U.N.'s chief prosecutor in Yugoslavia, Carla Del Ponte, on 1999-NOV-10, 2,108 complete corpses and an unknown but large number of incomplete bodies were found. 29

The Foca massacres were a series of killings committed by Serb military, police and paramilitary forces on Bosniak civilians in the Foca region of Bosnia and Herzegovina (including the towns of Gacko and Kalinovik) from April 7, 1992 to January, 1994.

In numerous verdicts, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia ruled that these killings constituted crimes against humanity. In a 1997 judgement against Novislav Djajic, the Bavarian Appeals Chamber ruled that the killings in June 1992 were acts of genocide. sides from mass murder, the campaign against non-Serb civilians in the region also included ethnic cleansing, mass rapes, and the deliberate destruction of Bosniak property and cultural sites. All Bosniaks were expelled from the area. Some 2,704 people from Foca are missing or were killed during the massacres period.

Numerous Serb officers, soldiers and other participants in the Foca massacres were accused and convicted of war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Attack against the civilian population
At the outset of the Bosnian war, Serb forces attacked the non-Serb civilian population in Eastern Bosnia. Once towns and villages were securely in their hands, Serb forces - i.e. the military, the police, the paramilitaries and, sometimes, even Serb villagers – applied the same pattern: Bosniak houses and apartments were systematically ransacked or burnt down while Bosniak civilians were rounded up or captured and, sometimes, beaten or killed in the process. Men and women were separated, with many of the men detained in local camps.

13 mosques including the Aladja Mosque were destroyed and the 22,500 Muslims who made up the majority of inhabitants fled. Only about 10 Muslims remained at the end of the conflict. On January 1994, the Serb authorities renamed Foca "Srbinje" , literally meaning "place of the Serbs" (from Srbi Serbs and -nje which is a Slavic locative suffix).

I have never seen more rugged men than when I was in Yugoslavia. It was funny to watch, a Yugo guy took this beautiful prissy German woman in his arms and practically "assaulted her" in our society's definition.

It was like he was a hungry animal.

Then another guy in a bar pushed his girlfriend really hard, across the room, and she came right back to him. In America that guy would have had twenty men jump on him for pushing a woman like that.

Don't mind us westerners. Most of us are so dumbed down by are public Education system that we couldn't even point out are own country on a world map. But yet we are taught to be so egotistical and arrogant that we think we are smart because we watch CNN and Fox news. In reality we are just a little smarter than a pile of rocks.

My coworker's dad is Serbian and she said her dad said the same thing. Actually he said there would be a war long before it actually started. I guess they all knew it was coming.

One thing about the Balkans is you have to understand the past to understand what happened in the 1990s. If you don't know what happened in the second war and prior to that, you don't know anything.

You should rebuild that area like it was in the 70s. You all need to get along first though. My croatian friend said in the 70s (i think) it was the best place to live. they all lived well. better than americans. in fact, she says that is why they started the war. cuz they were jealous Yugy was doing better than any other place? Not sure if that is true or not. she tends to get a bit excited about certain things.

the serbs actually resisted the nazis - go and read up. the actually saved hundreds of american pilots shot down by nazis in the second war. that i know.

And when the chetniks and the nazis were losing to the allies and they realized that the western nations supported tito and not the royal family anymore, and that their Serbian kingdom was forever lost, they switched sides and pretended they were all partisan and that the nazis ran Serbia from 1941-1943. More serbian lies. Nazi serbia was run by Milan Neic and his supreme commander Draza Mihailevic. They were even proud to proclaim that serbia was the 1st state in Europe that was "Juden frei". They even made anti-jewish stamps to commerate it.

There is a book about it. I'm only stating a fact. My Serb friend told me this. She said Croats allied with Nazis in the second war. Then she said for me to verify it in the history books. So I did. Just cuz I heard so many false statements it drove me nuts. One account stated if it wasn't for Serbs, the Nazis may have succeeded.

It's all well documented. I'm amazed how this gets twisted. That's why I said you have to understand the past to understand what happened in the 90s war.

I like all you guys. Croats, Serbs and Bosians. I really do hope you bury the past and move forward. You all seem like nice, hard working and decent people. Family first people.

The chetniks were the minority,most of the partisans antifashist army were serbs. And about this twisting of truth that you are trying to do here: i am a Serb from Croatia,my grandma's brother was sloughtered in croatian nazi concentration camp Jasenovac together with 600 000 other Serbs,jewish people and Romas and everyone of as Serbs from Croatia have lost someone in that death camp
