My daughter is a junior this year. I'm also working part time & going to school part time. (yeah, not much free time) Keep up the good work, it will pay off in the end. vaccinefreehealth blogspot com The risk far outweighs any benefit as the risk will vary from child to child. facebook.com/graphixyourway |

(OP) Keeping an "eye out" for the truth. User ID: 844228 United States 09/30/2011 02:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I actually think that many here are uncomfortable with the public school system, or have had a problem with it, and are not aware of the alternative of an online public school. It sounds really scary to be responsible for teaching your child, but the curriculum that we are using (K-12) is very complete and self-explanatory. [link to www.k12.com] [link to www.k12.com] You can also tailor the educational experience of your child to include things that are not on the regular curriculum. As an example, this afternoon, my son is coming to my workplace for a lesson in microbiology, using our microscopes. (I am in health care, so this works for me, but other parents may have other equally good resources.) It has been my experience that employers might be very supportive, if you sat down and had a talk with them, as long as whatever your plan is did not disrupt your workplace, or your ability to do your work. I would be happy to answer any questions from GLPers base upon my experience with this thus far. I will be honest and fair with my answers, and I realize that what is working for me (and my family) may not work for everyone else. Thanks, I know that there are many of us out there, but somehow we don't seem to get much attention, or the attention that we do get seems to paint us as somewhat crazy or weird. I think that this is a purposeful situation designed to frighten many away from the idea of home schooling. Thanks so much for your experience and information on this thread. Not even thinking about the lack of "social contacts" to other pupils...glad i went to public school for better or worse !!!! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2372995 My son has many different and varied experiences. He spends some time at my workplace, so he experiences an adult world as well as other adults. He spends time with an elementary education college student who works for me part-time, and also with his grandparents and father. He attends fieldtrips with his online class and other students, as well as having playtime with other children. This works for us, and he is very happy with his current situation. If he expresses any unhappiness with it, we can always revisit the public school situation as an option. It is also possible to arrange some classes like band or speech and debate in the bricks and mortar public school, while keeping the majority of the classes online, if the student feels that would better suit him or her. If your kid has problems at school you are a bad parent (nature (genes) or nurture (poor little billy)). Think of the millions of kids that attend school who excel, graduate college, etc. The only reason your little billy is different is you. |

Great, if it works out for you like that, i'm not judging your situation...i am glad however to have realized that “grades” and “intellectual knowledge” only make out a tiny fraction of life experience....there is nothing in the world to replace Mrs. Bierbaum (god save her soul) leaning over the table with her fat boobs explaining the calculus.. or Herman two tables to the right with such a bad breath, you wouldn’t dare get near to him. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1413058 United States 09/30/2011 03:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We're on year 2 of homeschooling. I don't use the virtual public school, as we like the freedom of choosing our own curriculum (not for religious reasons or anything). My kid is more social now than he was in public school. We have activities going on almost every day of the week. Today was a field trip, and tonight he's going to a party with a bunch of his homeschool friends. He loves being homeschooled, and doesn't ever want to go back to public school. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1511310 United States 09/30/2011 03:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | k12 virtual school is not what I would call "home school". The option is there to stay at home all day but most attend part time school or activities. There is also instructor led classes online, so the curriculum is still delivered by the k12 institution. It's a good medium to school and "home school", as long as the child is still involved in some activities. Oh and OP dang your hot. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2383129 If the public schools in the US were doing such a great job, I probably would not have even considered this option. For you to suggest that the US public school system isn’t a for the most part a wreck, shows that you have not been paying attention. “The tax-supported "public school" system is in trouble. There are chronic problems with discipline, mounting violence, declining test scores, and administrative costs spiraling out of control. Government schools continue to graduate functional illiterates, and US public school students' math skills are now among the worst in the industrialized world.” [link to www.isil.org] [link to www.thebaughers.com] [link to www.schoolandstate.org] If you live in another country, my sentiments do not apply, I am only speaking in terms of US schools. Because I care about my son’s education, and am willing to take a major role doesn’t make me a bad parent but rather a committed and concerned good parent. One of the beautiful things about GLP is that we can exchange ideas and information to help others. Thank you! I, too, have considered the possibilities and just haven't had a clue where to start. As a single mom working full time (and commuting 8 hours/week), I have concerns as to how it would work out. Not to mention that my daughter and I have polar-opposite personalities. So, I settled for a small parochial school in the area - not 100% happy with it, but it is better than the public school alternative. The online school would be ideal for us as my daughter can come to work with me and already has her own area (she's here when school is not in session.) I would be around to answer quick questions, but wouldn't be standing at the board for hours trying to teach. Thanks for the links - something to look into for sure. |
