The melons weren't shipped directly from the farm to the store.

Melons grow on the dirt, and you never see dirty melons in your grocery store. (At least not the edible kind.)

I'm guessing that they were washed with contaminated water at some point.

Do you have a reason for saying listeria doesn't grow on cantelopes? I read the article and it doesn't say. You know something we don't?

"a bacterium not typically associated with produce, and customers are being urged to discard the dangerous fruit."
Exalted is He from what they utter. Exalted is He from what they imagine. Exalted is He that exists without a place. Exalted is He that was there forever without a time or a beginning. Exalted is He that will be there forever without a time or an end. Exalted is He that will forever be praised. That is your God.

Thankfully, I've still got producing plants in my garden so I'm pretty sure about the source and distribution from the vine to my fridge. tounge

FWIW, my girlfriend had a quarter slice of one of the bad ones (we live VERY near the origin point), and spent two days violently ill. Scare campaign or not, something is going on here. This was 2-3 days BEFORE the media caught on, BTW.

I thought it was common practice to wash fruits and vegetable at home, before prep/consumption?

I've always wondered about this. How would you have to wash a cantaloupe (or any other fruit or veg) to kill a bacteria like this? The way I normally wash produce is rinse/scrub well with cool water. Would this really help if it were contaminated?

The MSM has been pushing this story, especially MSNBC (Democrat TV).

Here a Seattle newspaper does the same:

Better yet would be taking more pro-active measures. In an op-ed article, the New York Times (10/1/2011) called for the immediate passing of new food safety regulations by Congress to prevent these kinds of outbreaks in the first place.

It would not surprise me if the listeria was PLANTED.
