So I was watching a video from a previously pinned thread on the Denver International Airport - Needless to say, my interest was peaked.

I have known about the Denver New World Airport for some time now, and have always wondered about the roof. Finally, this video made me do some quick Google searching.


Look what I found.

The roof is made out of over 15 acres of Teflon-coated woven fiber glass. There is also the same material on the inside as a second layer.




The Roof has a melting point of 650 degrees !




It is NON FLAMMABLE.



"The material is pound-for-pound stronger than steel while weighing less than 5 ounces per square foot. It offers up to 24 percent solar translucency while providing as much as 75 percent solar reflectance, meaning the fabric lets in natural light while keeping out heat"

During the design and original creation of the material it was tested "for durability to various types of radiation,
Types of radiation included synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet and soft x-ray radiation, simulated solar flare x-ray radiation, electrons and protons."


"Thermal cycling was conducted in various temperature ranges to simulate HST orbital conditions for Teflon® FEP. Results of tensile testing of the exposed specimens showed that exposure to high influences of radiation caused degradation in tensile properties of FEP. However, exposure to radiation alone in exposures comparable to those experienced by HST did not produce reduction in ultimate tensile strength and elongation of Teflon® similar to that observed for HST-retrieved aluminized Teflon®. Synergism of radiation exposure and thermal cycling was evident in the results of three experiments: thermal cycling following electron and proton irradiation, thermal cycling following x-ray exposure, and additional thermal cycling of a sample retrieved from HST.

It aslo: can be used ... practical situation of high temperature of 250 for 200 days, not only the intensity will not decrease, the weight will not reduce; if put it under the high temperature of 350 for 120 hours, the weight only decreased by about 0.6%; under the situation of -180 , it will not chap and keep the original pliability;
