Re: Spiritual Preparedness - simple practices and meditations to increase self-awareness
This story is from the Upanishads, Kathopanishad, a scripture that unveils the mystery of death and the meaning of life.

An old story is told about the beginning of time. The universe was in the process of being created and not everything was yet in order or fully functioning. Before the universe could be totally engaged, the Creator had one final task to complete. To help him complete this task the Creator summoned an angel.

The angel came. The Creator told the angel that he had one last job to do in the making of the universe.

“I saved the best for last,” the Creator told the angel. “I have here the real meaning of human life, the treasure of life, the purpose and goal of all this that I have created.

“Because this treasure is valuable beyond description,” the Creator continued, “I want you to hide it. Hide this treasure so well that human beings will know its value to be immeasurable.”

“I will do so” said the angel. “I will hide the treasure of life on the highest mountain top.”

“The treasure will be too easy to find there,” said the Creator.

“Then,” said the angel, “I will hide the treasure in the great desert wilderness. Surely, the treasure will not be easily found there.”

“No, too easy.”

“In the vast reaches of the universe?” asked the angel. “That would make a difficult search.”

“No,” the Creator said pondering. Then his face showed a flash of inspiration. “I know. I have the place. Hide the treasure of life within the human being. He will look there last and know how precious this treasure is. Yes, hide the treasure there.”

Re: Spiritual Preparedness - simple practices and meditations to increase self-awareness
I am going to post simple, practical suggestions of how to maintain (or be able to keep returning to) spiritual awareness amidst the chaos of the everyday tasks and challenges of modern day life. I will endeavour to post 2 or 3 practical tips per week, so new readers be sure to read earlier posts.

We know a lot about being human and the physical aspects that go along with that, but how much do we really know about 'being'? How often are we actually living the present moment, right here and now and not trapped in traumas/joys of the past or fantasies/concerns of the future?

»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
The simple technique for today is to take some moments to become aware of where you think the energy of 'you' sits within your body. When you communicate with another person, where is it you 'tune in' to when you speak with them? When you look at a pet, where does your attention go?

Many say they feel themselves to be in the heart region of the body or the solar plexus and of course there is energy in those areas too, but when we really become aware of where 'I' reside, it is behind the eyes, centre forehead and this is where we look when we communicate with each other. This is where we look at a pet when we spend time with it too. Oftentimes we put our foreheads together with loved ones and favoured pets. This is where consciousness sits and from that point emotions and energy spread throughout the physical body.

Building awareness of this and coming back to 'being' that energy right here and right now looking out from the eyes is a really good place to start. When communicating with others, notice how their energy and personality comes from their head and eye area.

The pineal gland sits directly centre of the head - sometimes this is referred to as 'the seat of the Soul'. The 'third eye' is another term you have probably come across. The eyes are said to be the windows of the soul. The brain is not consciousness, it is more like a state of the art computer - the pineal gland is where consciousness sits, where soul meets matter - the control room.

Thank you so much for this thread.
Consider the possibility that you order yourself into being from chaos... You do this, always, in all ways. This "ordering" has resulted in the possibilities you're experiencing, here, now. In each experience you've ever had, more and more of "this" reality is generated logically from your previous experience. Your observation of this unfolding of order and chaos is reality.

Re: Spiritual Preparedness - simple practices and meditations to increase self-awareness
Some very insightful books for cultivating present moment awareness:-

The Presence Process - Michael Brown (there is a link to him talking on unconditional love for self in previous post).

The Four Agreements - Don Miguel Ruis - this is based on ancient Toltec wisdom.

Wherever I go, there I am - Jon Kabbat Zin - a modern day mindfulness expert.

I am sure most libraries would order these books in if they do not already stock them. I have found each of these very helpful in a practical way and I refer back to them often.

Re: Spiritual Preparedness - simple practices and meditations to increase self-awareness
In an earlier post, I suggested to experiment with the idea that the soul (eternal, peaceful and non-physical), the essence that makes you YOU, sits centre brain, mid forehead, looking out from the eyes.

The soul experiences through the body of matter which has five senses. The senses gather information from the material world and bring the results in to the brain which is in immediate connection to the soul, believed to sit at the pineal gland. We cannot see thoughts themselves but they can be imaged having an immediate effect on different areas of the brain, depending on the type of thought we are having.

All five senses are very close to this pineal area - sight, sound, smell and taste and of course touch which extends to all the body. I can be aware of my toes or my right knee for example but I do not feel my self awareness to be sitting in either of those areas and neither are they in close connection to the first four senses.

Here are a few ideas for a short meditation to help gain experience of the eternal self sitting behind the eyes.

'I become aware of my sense of being, sitting in this body of matter, looking out from behind the eyes. I am consciousness, pure awareness sitting within this physical body and experiencing the material world around me.

I give myself the time to just be and observe the thoughts arising in my mind. Gently I remind myself to bring my awareness into the present moment, I am sitting here right now in this moment. What can I see through these eyes? What can I hear through the ears? I accept everything to be exactly as it is right now. How deep and even is the breath I bring in and out of this body? How warm or cold is the air surrounding my body?

Turning my attention inwards, I remind myself that I am the master and creator of my thoughts. I have choice over each thought, word or action that I create, share and perform. I create beneficial thoughts when I feel peaceful and content and so I focus on the feeling of peace, I breathe peace into my body and I breathe out tension and negativity. The more authentic and genuine the thoughts I create, then I can feel assured that my words and actions will be positive ones.

I focus on this feeling of peace and see if I can send the vibrations of this feeling throughout my own body. With each breath in and out I become more and more peaceful. I feel like I am bathing in an ocean of peace and I begin to send this vibration outwards into the atmosphere around me, I fill the room I am in with peace. I feel peace extending from me even beyond the room or space my body occupies.

I sit here an eternal peaceful being within this body of matter and I send out vibrations of peace, the more I send out the more I fill up. I am content, I am peaceful.....'

Practice regularly to build a deeper awareness of self as a non material being of peace, living within a body of five senses. Happy meditating :)

I will add quotes to this post as I come across them - I am sure there are many that refer to the soul sitting behind the eyes :)

'Meditation is the art of withdrawing our attention from experience to the experiencer. Meditation is the art of reversing the direction of attention from the illusion to the reality of consciousness'. Ishwar Puri

Ishwar Puri refers on occasions to the human body's chakras, but warns us:

"Don't go after the little tricks of the six chakras below, of these energy centers. Don't be fooled by the beautiful colors and experiences and think this is a spiritual experience. Don't waste your time. We have to meditate and 'be' between, behind and above the physical eyes. Don't go downward from there to find spirituality and truth".

“What is that you express in your eyes? It seems to me more than all the print I have read in my life.” - Walt Whitman

'The eyes indicate the antiquity of the soul'.
Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803-1882

"Oftentimes we put our foreheads together with loved ones and favoured pets." -Sorry I don't know how to quote. I don't ever post, just always looking for more enlightenment and occasional laughs at doom. Anyway, that really touched me, what you said about putting your forehead together with a cherished pet. I would lay in bed at random times here and there with my cat and would always hold her up above me and lower her head down to my forehead. I loved that cat so much. She taught me the purest and most sincere form of love in life. Sometimes I thought we just understood each other, on a different level. I like to think that her life was taken from me because my lesson in what real love in life had been taught and it was time for her to teach someone else. She used to visit me in my dreams often, I haven't seen her in a while.

What a lovely story to share, it must be comforting to see her in your dreams too. Sometimes pets seem more like spiritual guardians - I had a lovely dog when I was little called General, there was a lot of loss and trauma in my life back then but his beautiful energy really helped me to feel loved just as I was - just because. He was my best friend and a great protector.
