It was someone you know, or at the very least someone who was in your house at some point..
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1556901

YES!!!! the vast majority of thefts are NOT random, but from someone that has been in the house or hangs out with family and has been to the house, or knows you via a family member or mutual friend...

Was there forced entry? 10 minutes is bloody fast to accomplish all that.

That sucks! Two of my friends have hadtheir homes broken into in the past two weeks. I worry more about being home if someone breaks in, than losing stuff. Glad you're safe now, at least.

To boot, if it was a neighbor or someone you know, they will be watching you as you get new shit, and then they will rob you again... better make some security changes.

They took guns, jewelry boxes with jewelry I have had for years and years, our laptop computers ( I am using my work computer right now) ---they broke the back door and we have an alarm system; they were able to take a lot in 10 minutes as that is how long the police took to get here.

i am sorry for you loss, sweetheart.

i know from you being here on glp, that you get the "greater" lessons.

what you lost were items you dont NEED. bc you were tied to them, they were taken. now you are free of them.

if you get that now, bravo.

if you are angered by what i say, that too will pass.

blessings to you. and i am sorry for the stiff lesson (i too have had my share).

think about getting a dog...

some punk kids broke into my car at 3am one night, little did they know I just got home from a 10 hour shift and was about to go to bed when I heard them... the adrenaline was pumping and I ran after them so hard and they ran like the little pussies they are. ended up dropping the shit they took while fleeing in terror.

Call all the pawn shops in the area, and give them all pictures or drawings and descriptions of your items and offer a reward.

And check back with them to see if anything came in

Re: Someone broke into our house this afternoon
That unsafe feeling SHOULD start diminishing after a month. Hang on tight and wait it out for a month. If its not lessening (or if it worsens) seek a therapist to help you work through the emotions these two events have left you with.

I fear that the unsafe feeling will never 100% vanish, however it will become minimal, only springing up with something triggers it.

At first do expect to be suspicious of everyone who you do not know in the neighborhood. Suddenly you will be keenly aware of all of these 'new' vehicles. Most of them have always been there, now you are just very aware.

Do NOT be afraid to talk to your neighbors. If you see something that makes you worry about the safety in the neighborhood DO talk to your neighbor.

EXAMPLE:

You will suddenly be very aware of Fed-X and similar deliveries on the street. DO talk to the neighbor who is getting deliveries. Explain to them that due to the recent robbery you are more aware of 'stuff' going on and you want to know if it is normal for them to get regular type deliverers, this way you can ease your mind.

Most people will be understanding that you are 'gun-shy' about the whole matter, so they will assure you.

Yes, insurance will cover it but I can't replace the sentimental items ...things my husband has given me for years that are now gone. I can't get back the feeling of being safe in my own home either. I lost a home in a tornado two years ago.

My pets were alive and well thank goodness.

Glad your sweet pets were unharmed, not to mention your family. My husband's 18 year old niece had her home broken into on Friday night, plus attempted rape on top of stealing her purse and laptop. With her 2 year old daughter in the room. This kind of thing will be happening more and more as the economy continues to tank. There are soulless people out there as well as the simply desperate ones.

Check local pawn shops for your jewelry...it helps if you have any pictures. Pawn shop owners do NOT want to get in trouble with the law and will go out of their way to turn in crooks.
