Re: Will the real Jesus please stand up?
I would be curious to know if your belief system is held by others you know or know of, or if this is something you've come to believe on your own. I only ask because I've never heard anyone describe their spiritual beliefs quite like you have.

Your last sentence is actually something I intend to discuss either tonight ot tomorrow (it's 12:40 am my time, but who knows, I can be a real night owl). I think it's only natural to wonder if Jesus is truly God, then why in the heck did he not come right out and say something like,"I am the Almighty creator God of Abraham, Jacob and Moses, and I have come to you as a man so that I may do the work that was prophesied that I would do. This work may only be accomplished in my state as a human being."
 Quoting: Jenann

It's an evolving synthesis of beliefs, experiencing and good ideas.

I'm sure some one else has though of it before...

However close, it is still a simulacra, to be exchanged for the Living Truth when I bring it to the Altar.

Re: Will the real Jesus please stand up?
Hi Everyone,

The intention of this thread is to discuss the deity of Christ. Yeah I know, a lot of you think that things having to do with Jesus are stupid or basically full of it. For the scoffers out there, I invite you to give the topic another chance, but I would like for us to approach the topic from an investigator's stance. To this end, I offer up the following guidelines:

- Please avoid posting videos.

- Try to discuss without attacking.

- Please avoid denominational arguments and Catholic vs. Protestant arguments.

- If you want to quote scripture that is fine, but try to avoid posting a large number of verses at once.

- Articles are sometimes good sources, but please quote the portion that is significant to your point of view. Please also post a link to the article for those who might want to read the whole thing.

- Let's try to stay on topic. I will discuss this in the next post.
 Quoting: Jenann

Do atheists believe there was a person named Jesus who was crucified and then everything else was made up or do they just believe everything was made up? I always had trouble with the idea that there were so many first generation Christians that were willing to die for these beliefs. Why would they run around and say Jesus had rosen from the dead if it was only going to get them tortured and/or killed? I'm biased so maybe I just don't see the logic.

Hi John,

I am no expert on athiests, but the athiests I have run into in the past all believed Jesus was a real historical figure. I can't remember off hand if they believed he was crucified.

I have no idea what athiests believe about Jesus in the current decade. Maybe someone else out there knows something about this.

I am with you on not seeing the logic. Every last one of the disciples other than Judas was martyred. People these days might argue that the suicide bombers go to their deaths for their beliefs, so how can one say that the disciples' martyrdom was more significant? I have a thought on this, and it might make some people mad, but I think it is very important to talk about the early Christian martyrdom, since some people say the Bible has changed over time. I think it is quite relevant to figure out what was going on with Jesus' followers in the first century.

I think when you boil it all down, their motives are the best indicator of what was really at play. It seems that martyrdom among some Muslims is the most certain way to heaven and its many rewards. So essentially they are getting something out of it for themselves (or so they think). And if there are Muslims out there that disagree with this, by all means, please give us your understanding on this topic. I have a couple of Muslim friends, and we have not yet discussed this.

On the other hand, Jesus' disciples and had absolutely nothing to gain for themselves. They already trusted Jesus as their savior and believed by doing so they were going to heaven. I suppose they could have faked a denial of Jesus to save their lives, but somehow they counted their earthly lives as less valuable than their true motive, which I have come to believe was love, the kind that does not seek the self, the kind that is willing to die for believing in God and the testimony it brings to us, even in this century.

I hope you are doing well. I know we don't agree on what you said above, and I am trying to stay away from denominational disagreements and Catholic/Protestant disagreements. So for now would you do me a favor and redirect your comments to the deity of Jesus and why you believe he is God and why it is important to you? You may have a unique way of describing these things that we have not yet considered. Who knows, there could be hundreds of people on this forum that don't believe that Jesus even existed, so I don't think now is the time to be jumping that far into it.

And, if at some other time you want to talk about the Eucharist with me, I would not have any objection to joining you in a separate thread about it, even if nobody other than the two of us participate. I give you my word on that.

Very kind reply, hi Jen,rose

There is hardly ever a discussion just denial. What about those three verses? Okay...another thread. The Eucharist is proof of the divinity of Christ. There have been many Eucharistic miracles through the centuries to help disbelievers.

I can give three other proofs....
All point to the diety of Christ. Reply to them anyone.

The overall fellowship got bigger and bigger until land was purchased and a good sized campus was constructed.

I wish I could adequately describe the sweetness of Christian fellowship in the context of a group that is small enough where you consider every member to be a close friend. We all still attend the large meeting, but after the teaching is over, we hang out in our small group and potluck.

It sounds like a great group.

If possible please identify the large meeting location via this site:

Hi Daniel,

This has nothing to do with you in particular, but maybe we can figure out another way to share information. Would you consider joining GLP for one month so that we can share info? Last I checked it was $10. Or maybe there is another way (?).

My hubby and I have a thing where we don't give out our personal email addresses to people from the opposite gender on the internet. I totally get that you have nothing but good intentions, but I need to do this for him.

I had actually set out to see if you would be interested in helping out with hosting this thread, but I had no way of contacting you (the GLP gods wouldn't let me). TW sent me a message before I became a member, but I was not allowed to respond since I was not a member. So I thought I could get a message through to you and that you could give me a reply on that thread we were both on over that last couple of weeks, but it didn't work.

Anyway, I value your input here, so any time you can spend here is greatly appreciated.

Re: Will the real Jesus please stand up?
Good night everyone! I'll be back tomorrow in the late afternoon or early evening. I hope y'all get some good conversations going while I'm gone.

Here's a note to myself about some of the topics people brought up that we did not discuss yet:

If Jesus is God, why didn't he say so in terms that are crystal clear to us? Or for that matter, if he isn't God, why didn't he make that crystal clear?

What is so important about the first verse in the gospel of John? Where does the term, "the Word" come from and what does it mean?

What did I mean when I used the term, "truly seeking"?
