Quakes 'could rupture glacial lakes'

Glacial lakes in the Himalayas could pose a major hazard to population centres if they are ruptured by earthquakes, scientists say.

The true risk to settlements and infrastructure downstream in the Hindu-Kush-Himalayas region is difficult to assess.

But the Himalayan region is dotted with glacial lakes and is in a seismically active zone.

Experts say that, on the basis of past records, a large quake in the region is overdue.

"Such a disaster is very much possible, more so, when we are expecting a big earthquake in the region now," says Sushil Kumar, a geophysicist with the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in India."

Picturesque Gangtok, capital of Sikkim, is completely cut-off from all sides by road due to widespread landslides. Darjeeling, where i spent my childhood, is dark due to power outage. Indian army has been engaged. Sikkim Manipal University (11 Km down from Gangtok) student residences have collapsed. Miraculously nobody has been hurt because students were out playing on the fields. Hopefully the modest, one of the most modern states of India will be saved by blessings of Budhha who they worship and follow devoutly. The Sikkimeese people are one of the best in the world: humble, helpful and ever smiling, they have created one of the most crime-free and cleanest places in the country.

Eleven killed as quake rocks India, Nepal

A STRONG 6.9-magnitude earthquake has hit northeast India, killing at least 11 people, including three caught in a wall collapse at the British Embassy in neighbouring Nepal.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck the small, landlocked Himalayan state of Sikkim - which borders Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet - about 6.10pm (10.40pm AEST) yesterday.

The epicentre was just over 60 kilometres northwest of the Sikkim state capital Gangtok, which was plunged into darkness by a power cut after the quake.
