Sorry, I do not follow earthquakes a lot, is India not used to big quakes?

To answer your question, yes, they do get lots of EQ's. The main problem is their infastructure. Many of their buildings and structures are unable to withstand large EQ's.

Furthermore, the EQ being as shallow as it was makes the possibility of damage much greater.

According to USGS [link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

As you can see from what ppl are reporting according to the data on the above link. There was considerable (Very Strong Shaking and Moderate damage).

Needless to say, just keep an eye on news reports on this EQ.

As I type this there was also another EQ which was an aftershock of an 4.8 [link to earthquake.usgs.gov] .

Peace!

Sikkim is a disputed area between India and China, this area is North east of India , not exactly North of India (where elites visited)

China and India have yet to address their fundamental and very large land boundary disputes. Moreover, their bilateral relations are complicated by the issues of Tibet (Xizang), Sikkim, and Kashmir. India plays host to the Dalai Lama and a large number of Tibetan refugees. They present an implicit threat to Chinese control of Tibet, which it invaded in 1950. On its maps, the PRC continues to portray Sikkim, which was absorbed by India in 1974, as an independent country. In addition to the Aksai Chin, China and India dispute another section of Kashmir (the area west of Aksai Chin).
