" That's what makes NASA's awe-inspiring snapshot of Saturn (hi-res version here) such a stunning piece of eye candy." -- LOL PALEASE!

NASA's Cassini orbiter snaps unbelievable picture of Saturn
By Mike Wehner, Tecca | Today in Tech -- 9/8/2011

Science fiction movies have spoiled us on high definition views of our planetary neighbors, but real-life photographs with equal jaw-dropping potential are exceedingly rare. That's what makes NASA's awe-inspiring snapshot of Saturn (hi-res version here) such a stunning piece of eye candy.

Taken by NASA's Cassini robotic orbiter, the shot was captured from the dark side of Saturn as the Sun's bright rays illuminated every piece of dust and debris circling the planet. Cassini has offered astronomers a never-before-seen look at Saturn and revealed more information about the planet than any craft before it. The craft has taken so many pictures of the ringed wonder that they were recently made into a short flyby film that looks like it was created by George Lucas rather than a robotic space explorer.

The Cassini probe was launched in 1997 and took a further 7 years to reach Saturn's orbit. The total cost of its overarching objective of studying the ringed planet stands at a staggering $3.26 billion. However, the wealth of information it has wrought — including amazing pictures like the one above, and recordings of massive lightning storms on the planet — have already made it one of the best investments in space exploration. Hopefully Juno — which began a 5-year trek to Jupiter just last month — will bring us some equally stunning shots of Saturn's neighbor.

There could be a million reasons why it looks like the way it does. They have all kinds of filters and methods when taking pictures. I bet you nor the guy who made the video even bothered to look that up.

Read the article that goes with that image. The image was taken from the shadowed side of Saturn. Saturn was eclipsing the sun. In the article, it's also noted that the colors are exaggerated.

Please take the time to read things before posting.

I suggest reading the original description of the APOD:
[link to apod.nasa.gov]

It clearly says that it is from 2006.

I also suggest reading the page linked from the description of the APOD:
[link to photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov]

"This marvelous panoramic view was created by combining a total of 165 images taken by the Cassini wide-angle camera over nearly three hours on Sept. 15, 2006. The full mosaic consists of three rows of nine wide-angle camera footprints; only a portion of the full mosaic is shown here. Color in the view was created by digitally compositing ultraviolet, infrared and clear filter images and was then adjusted to resemble natural color."

Aint it grand when the "Expert" Google "researchers" can't even follow the paths laid out before them?

The recent Yahoo story:

[link to news.yahoo.com]

Leads to the Tecca.com story where Yahoo got it's info:

[link to www.tecca.com]

Which points to NASA where it clearly states that this is the image from 2006:

Re: NASA's Cassini Snaps Unbelievable Picture of Saturn - No Really! It's Not Believable!!
This image is taken while the space craft is in the shadow being cast by the sun. The rings are illuminated from behind. With only reflected light to be seen from the surface of the planet there would obviously have to be area specific enhancements in order to see the dark side surface of the planet, they even state it was color exaggerated. The ring encircling the planet would be lense effects from the atmosphere.

The critique that it is fake is definately incorrect. I realize it's fun to think nothing we've ever been told is true, but there would be no benefit for anyone to create a fake photo of Saturn....... come on.

And the FACT is NASA tells you it is doctored.

What don't YOU get about that?

So it's a non-issue.

I've been reviewing NASA images since the early 70's, raw photos tend to be very bland. It is no secret.

Anyway the premise of the OP that NASA was lying is UNFOUNDED.

The majority of GLPer's go on and on about how only THEY know the truth, but in a case like this IT IS A FACT the OP bore false witness.

Most GLPer's have no problem doing that.

Disgusting and deplorable for people that claim to know the truth.

I don't even know what this - this (as he points at the spark of light at the bottom of Saturn) is.

Its the sun you moron.

This is a HD image from "behind" Saturn. Cassini is positioned to where the sun is nearly completely behind Saturn.

The light show, reflections of light off the rings is what is producing the effect of shadow and light on and off Saturn.

Trillions of dust size mirrors reflecting light in dozens of directions is what gives Saturn this eerie glow.
