I think they're becoming more effective. They mentally frame specific social issues in a way beneficial to the elite and kids watch this and imitate and repeat what they see, regarding it as clever, funny, cutting-edge, and glamorous.

I suspect that many film makers are even unwitting participants in this process, as are many writers. the programming for them comes in at a more fundamental level thru personal and business relationships.

If you mean the quality of movies in general is low I think there's a viable argument there, but in terms of framing VERY specific social and cultural issues they've become far more sophisticated.

Movies constitute a kind of public discourse, and what I've noticed is one movie can send different and even contradictory messages targeted to different audiences. So for example there might be a message targeted for a specific ethnic group with contradicts the general message of the story.

Older movies were directed to a very general audience and had a very general message but now movies are very targeted to very specific audiences. That makes them actually more effective as a means of social engineering.
