NOAA Says Irene "Well Organized"
Warns That Path Forecasts At Current Stage Could Be Off By Up To 200 Miles.

AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT THE CENTRAL PRESSURE HAS FALLEN TO 993 MB.

MOST OF THE GUIDANCE...WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE GFDL AND UKMET...ARE IN RELATIVELY GOOD AGREEMENT ON TURNING IRENE NORTHWESTWARD INTO THE BREAK IN THE RIDGE IN 2 OR 3 DAYS. HOWEVER...SIGNIFICANT SPREAD REMAINS IN THE SHARPNESS OF THIS TURN IN THE MODEL SUITE. FOR THIS CYCLE THE CONSENSUS TRACK MODELS HAVE SHIFTED BACK A LITTLE TO THE LEFT...

If Irene stays on track, computer models bring the storm just off the southeast coast of Florida as a Category 1 hurricane at 8 p.m. Thursday and in northeast Florida 24 hours later, according to the advisory.

Tropical Storm Irene has begun moving across Puerto Rico with torrential rains and winds .

Krizia Negron, a meteorologist with the U.S. National Weather Service in San Juan, said forecasters earlier said Irene was likely to pass south of Puerto Rico, but the storm shifted north and was passing directly over the island.

Chatter about Cat 2 now; that was fast.

...
Forecast path continues to keep Florida's East Coast in the cone and could pass relatively close to us late Thursday or early Friday as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane, forecasters report.

"If Irene moves over more of Hispaniola or over parts of eastern Cuba, it will likely be weaker than indicated," Pasch wrote in the 5 p.m. discussion. "However, if the system ends up moving to the north of both of those land masses, it could strengthen more than expected."

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Gov. Luis Fortuno says the storm has closed more than a dozen roads, knocked down many trees and caused at least two landslides. More than 800,000 households have been without power. That's about half the island. The governor told reporters Monday that the storm caused no deaths or major injuries.

THE GFDL AND HWRF MODELS ARE FORECASTING that Irene will be a MAJOR HURRICANE AT
SOME TIME DURING ITS LIFETIME- the question is, will it be a CAT 3, 4, or a 5.

This person puts Irene in the GOM with a central pressure of 947 using the HWRF/GFDL models. Have no idea if this is accurate or reliable. Position is below the Florida panhandle.

NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER says IRENE IS FORECAST TO BECOME A LARGER THAN AVERAGE HURRICANE. Max intensity is forecast 26 AUG/ 135 MPH sustained winds. A major CAT 4 storm. FridaY : PREDICTED LOCATION: OFFSHORE EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA. HOW FAR Irene will be OFFSHORE is not known at this time.

Given the unpredictable nature of storm tracking, storm surges, destructive wave activity, and hurricane force winds, Irene could be impacting the central Florida East coast on Friday.

Re: NOAA Says Irene "Well Organized"
Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the hurricane center, said Irene’s projected path paralleling the Florida coast meant that a slight wobble or delay in an expected northward turn could push the powerful core from offshore onto a densely developed shoreline.

“The stakes are high because it would take just a slight shift in the track to the left to make a dramatic change in the impact of the storm in a hugely populated area,’’ he said.
