What about if for every 2 bad karmas you give out, you get one in return?

That would put a stop to a lot of the frivolous bad karmas being given out.
 Quoting: Artlicious

I haven't tried out the karma system yet, so this suggestion might be how it already works. But if it cost you one good karma point to give out a bad one; and you couldn't give a bad karma point if you don't have any good ones to spare. That might help with the karma inflation economics.

Of course, if this is how it already works, just ignore this post.

I don't think so, OP...

I mean, I just voted your thread Absolute Bullshit, and I've never even Karma rated you.

The way I see it is if the person is between 50% red and 50% green they are normal run of the mill people, if they are over 50% green they are probably awesome individuals, if over 50% red they are probably assholes.

just my opinion :)
 Quoting: Doommincus Maximus

Why make the assumption? Just click on the karma bar and see for yourself what the bases for the ratings are.

I have noticed several posters with bad Karma points... posters that I am familiar with their posting style and wondered why on Earth anyone would bad Karma them.

IMO, this is a potential problem with the Karma system... people using the Karma feature in place of the thread rating system. Using this as a way to voice disagreement or disapproval of a single thread or post seems to defeat the idea somehow.

Close but the assholes stick together and are mostly green so that part you got wrong. That's why the reds have smaller range than do the greens. The reds are mostly independent thinkers who don't go with the crowd but are nonetheless valid (mostly).

It's a pain for me to use the karma rating.

I keep java script turned off.

So I have to turn java on to give karma.

Most of the time, it's not worth the effort.

Re: Bad Karma Good Karma... Being used in place of thread rating?
Well, if you think that the moon is gone then I suggest that it is not, and the thread needs the "karma rating" then.

But (and it seems that there is always a but.........) if threads are bad then it should be the threads that are marked and not the "karma rating" of the individual.

Because look around at the world, and give it a 'karma rating'.

Is it a new religion?
Is it karma in the morning, karma in the evening, karma at suppertime?

Just my opinion, but perhaps more wars are caused by 'karma' than by any other subject matter. It's all how you rate the karma, but again, I just do not see that everyone is going to want to be like a politician, and well, karma, it's in the head of the Observer, and we all are - Observers!

Re: Bad Karma Good Karma... Being used in place of thread rating?
I agree OP. I have received several unpleasant ratings from people in response to a kind, loving thread I posted that was pinned from which people made assumptions about my character instead of focusing on the thread itself and using the rating buttons or just posting their disapproval on the thread.

It's quite sad actually when you think about it but then again as with any system you will always have people who use it incorrectly.

Thank you for pointing that out. I hope your thread is noticed.

Blessings hf
 Quoting: TrixieMama

The karma system may not be very accurate. Some people just like going after good posters to lower their rating. Jealousy abounds. And some people just like causing problems where there were none in the first place.

I completely agree with you. In fact, I did the same thing when I was figuring out how it worked. It should not related to the thread, but the person., and I see still now, people are not "getting it". And, its understandable, wouldn't you need to be pretty familiar with the poster and all of their postings before you could even begin to apply karma points?

I have tried it out, I am just going to stick using the thread rating system to look for good threads, regardless of karma and how many colors of pins there are. I think I am going to be frugal about good karma and bad karma. Only give it if I notice the person is really really good or really really bad over a period of time, and I will really try to be careful about giving Karma based on a single thread, but on the user as a whole.

Maybe just have good karma points.

And of course if someone has a beef with you they don't give you any good or bad karma at all. They just ignore you.

I wouldn't want to give out any bad karma points to someone because according to karma it would come back right at me. Don't people get this?

What you give out you receive back.

it's happening to me. i just keep doing my own thing. just like i always do.

i use the vote for the level of thread worthiness and karma for posters who work hard and are contributing to glp. or are asshats. i haven't wasted many karma points on them.

i think you should leave your initials at least. the ones i haven't left mine are because i'm shy. sorta. well, maybe i didn't want to be branded an ass kisser. cause i'm not.

let the karma debate keep rolling.
