I've culled down most of your choices to the top 6. There were many fantastic choices, but some names and models were submitted multiple times. Of those, I decided to create a poll so others who may not be familiar with them could see what everybody else prefers. I also tried to keep the list to current production model knives under $250. They are "Made in Spain" and have many many years making this awesome knifes. They use alloy of Chrome-Molibden-Vanadium Cr-Mo-Va and they are very sharp, almost imposible to break, easy to sharp again and had a very good grip. Not even a soap hand will loose grip. [link to www.aceros-de-hispania.com] I have: Black Bear White Bear Commando A machete from Brasil (no brand) And for all-use knife/tool a LEATHERMAN all in one. Very good Made in USA with his leather case. The rest of survival is in my head and lots of training on the outdoors. PS: If anyone want a good tip, get a sharpning stone and a bunch of cans of WD-40 to lubricate the knife. That would be all for SHTF situation. It still shines and holds an edge with just an occasional dusting off and a touch of oil. (penis jokes withheld at this point, please!!!) Amazing knives. If the most recent version is even as half as good; it's got to be awesome. I know some others that own the recent Bucks and Gerbers, etc.. They all seem pretty good too. I don't think that any knife listed here is a bad choice. It may come down purely to a matter of personal choice. |

If you have a 10" hog sticker, you might find processing the hog a little cumbersome. Take a RAT5 or even a Case Trapper and done in minutes. (But try sticking the hog with the Case! Meh...) Unless I have to fly somewhere or go into a goobermint building (like a courthouse), I usually have my Leatherman Wave & a folder in my pocket. I keep my "Oh shit, I'm walking home" kit in my car along with my aqualung master dive knife in a "survival" sheath. I went to a wedding in Wisconsin a little while ago, and my wife was making fun of me because I had a folder in my suit pants pocket. I'm not surprised to not see a cutco hunting knife on the list, they are a low key company because they do no advertising and only sell through word of mouth. I've had my cutco hunting knife for 10 years now, it has butchered a couple dozen animals, cut open a couple dozen cans, and been used to cut countless other things. It is still almost as sharp as it was when I bought it and as soon as I send it back to the manufacturer's they will sharpen it for free or give me a brand new one if that one is broken in any way. The blade design is the best I've ever seen. It's not serrated, it's better than that. I know there are better knives out there, but a cutco hunting knife is only like $60 or $80, not $500 or whatever. |

For self defense, maybe get yourself an asp/extendable baton. [link to www.selfdefenseproducts.com] They're affordable, lightweight, and VERY effective. Plus, if you ever have to use it, it's less likely that you'll kill your opponent and spend the rest of your life in jail. Ultimately, your best self defense tools are your mind and your body. Maybe try taking some self defense courses, and learn how to avoid situations where you may be forced to fight. I was a L.I.N.E. Instructor (Hand to Hand combat) in the USMC for a while, and even I know that anybody can kick anybody else's ass on any given day. San Mai III is way to expensive for a true "duty" knife!  Sorry sir, I just typed up the list from the other thread before I saw your post. I like a good Tanto blade design, bit I almost prefer it on my folder. Only because on a smaller knife I prefer a stronger tip.
