What is your favorite survival knife?
With all of this financial doom, I was going over some of my supplies and realized that I have several knives.

A solid knife should be an essential part of your bug out bag, and is a crucial tool to have. Knowing what your knife is capable of and how to use it is just as important.

I started to do a mental review of my favorites, so i thought I'd share my thoughts on what I've experienced with what I have:

Aqualung/US Divers Master Dive Knife - has the most sentimental value, as I got it from a SEAL many moons ago. Stainless blade (hard to keep sharp under heavy use), 3/4" stainless pommel makes great hammer, zytec handle slightly uncomfortable, could do without the serated part of blade, batons wood decently but not ideal. Great multi-purpose knife, perhaps not the best survival blade. Needs aftermarket sheath (I bought one that has a pocket for flintsteel, leatherman tool, etc.)

Ka-Bar Large Heavy Bowie - Great chopper. Almost full flat grind, so beware of knotty oak chipping blade. Made in Taiwan (wtf?), but performs like a workhorse so far. Not a fan of molded rubber handle. No pommel, so no hammering. Sheath is kind of crappy and awkward. Not bad overall, but not sure I trust it long term.

Tops Knives Tom Brown Tracker T1 - Ridiculously expensive, but has some great capabilities. It seems like mall-ninja crap, until you get used to using it (with the provided instructions). Difficult to sharpen. Kydex sheath with metal belt clips, can be worn "scout" style. Built like a tank but is also very heavy. Definitely not for everyone. Might be a keeper for SHTF survival.

Ka-Bar Becker BK2 Campanion - Possibly my favorite bush knife ever. Like a sharpened pry bar. Splits wood like buttah. Pommel allows for hammering. 5 inch blade makes it versatile. Affordable. Stock handle scales not great, aftermarket micarta scales cost as much as the knife but worth it IMO. Kydex sheath need modifications but is fairly quality made. I feel comfortable performing most tasks with this. 1/4 the cost of the Tracker T1 knife. Best bang for the buck.

I have a few more blades, but these are the ones I have been abusing the most this spring/summer.

Anybody else have a decent survival knife that they'd like to recommend?

I bought a bk2 a couple months ago. The sheath and handle seem adequate to me. Don't see the need to change them. At least not yet. Nice knife, and a steal at 60 bucks for a knife made in the USA that will probably never need replacing.

I'm actually in the process of filing out a blank right now from some virgin carbon steel. My last attempt was a decent learning experience. I made it out of a leaf spring, but didn't anneal it properly, and after I hardened and tempered it, some of the memory came back. So I did what any idiot shouldn't do and stuck it in the 75ton press at work. Back to square one lol

Think bolo/kuhkri hybrid with a few heavy modifications.

That's a great knife (I wish Camillus was still around), but possibly not the best for bushcraft chores. Is the blade sharpened on both sides? How would you baton a log with that?

That is currently what is hanging above my right ass cheek.

Sometimes you need a fixed blade, full tang workhorse of a knife. Especially if the SHTF.

You can buy those old kisar (spelled wrong) blades, sling blades at flea markets. I have a bowie I made out of one of these and you can chop or shave with it. Leaf springs make a awesome machete.

Will try to post a pic of one

Personal opinion. The hollow "grivory" scales seemed cheap to me, although they do have the added advantage of putting a mini-survival stash inside (just be sure to duct tape an Allen wrench to the sheath).. The Micarta handle just seem more durable to me.

The belt loop on the sheath had way too much play even for my rigging belt. I solved that with duct tape. Also, I prefer leather sheaths with pockets for other supplies. The Hedgehog Leatherworks sheath is fantastic, but I cant see spending $250 on a sheath for a $60 knife. lmao

ETA: make sure to put some loctite on the hardware. After heavy use, they tend to loosen up a bit. hf

Agreed... Great work knife... Beat it up and it still performs.

Good chopper as you say... Add a few cans of WD-40 to the stash... Helps lubricate the knife when you get tired...

You may already know such things.

Something like these? [link to www.opiknife.com]

I think a good folding knife has it's place, but more moving parts increase the chance of mechanical failure long term.

IMHO, if you can't buy or make a knife once the SHTF, you need something more sturdy and dependable.

One other not to add about a good knife, it should also be fairly comfortable to use without the scales/handle. The BK2 I mentioned is ergonomic, while some other knives may be extremely uncomfortable should you break the handles.

I did know that, but I made this thread for others who maybe are just starting to prep, or are looking for a solid knife, and some skills, or others to share what they've found to work well and what might not.

Great heft and tough as hell.

There's definitely some sweet blades out there, but like you said, who wants to shell out $600 for something you're gonna beat on, when a $100 (or less) blade does just as well.
